PB hotel design editorial

At the edge of Stavanger's old town, where cobbled streets give way to the low timber facades of one of Norway's best-preserved wooden city centres, a white functionalist building with a clock tower and a curved timber rooftop pavilion holds its ground with quiet confidence. That tension — between the modernist restraint of the structure and the warmth of what lies within — is exactly the proposition of Eilert Smith Hotel, a property that takes its name from a nineteenth-century Norwegian painter and wears its local identity without apology. The ground-floor bar is the interior's most assured gesture: a curved travertine counter edged in brass, slatted oak shelving backlit behind the bottles, and clusters of globe pendants hanging at varying heights above terracotta velvet bar stools from Gubi's Beetle series. The palette throughout shifts between the earthy warmth of the public spaces and the cooler Nordic restraint of the guest rooms, where oak-framed beds sit beneath directional black wall sconces, deep green velvet curtains frame timber window surrounds, and the occasional burl-wood kitchen unit — present in the apartment-style rooms — adds a note of artisan specificity. Limestone tiles run continuously across floors, anchoring spaces that might otherwise feel provisional. The rooftop pavilion, visible in the exterior image with its curved glazing and warm timber ceiling, confirms that the building's most considered gesture was always intended to be experienced from above, looking out over the terracotta rooflines of old Stavanger below.

"Wonderful and luxurious boutique hotel. Starting with the beautifully restored Norwegian Functionalist (Funkis) building, to the warm, personal service and excellent in-room breakfast, this well located hotel was beyond our high expectations. The generously sized room was immaculate and extremely comfortable, with a large row of windows looking over the harbour. We wouldn’t hesitate to return again. Highly recommended for the discerning traveler. Thank you, Stina, for the tour and your kind hospitality."

"The hotel is really well located and we had a wonderful, super spacious suite with a lovely view to the sea. The bed was really comfortable, all the furnishings and fittings very high quality and we loved the record player and selection of LPs and the complimentary mini bar. The team at the hotel were very friendly, helpful and extremely accommodating and were always available to help with any request."
