PB hotel design editorial

Sod roofs heavy with late-summer grass, darkened timber walls, and a cluster of low-slung log structures arranged around a gravel courtyard — this is the vernacular language of the Norwegian fjord farmstead, translated into a small luxury hotel above the waters of the Storfjord. Storfjord Hotel, which sits on a hillside in Skodje on the Sunnmøre coast, was built using traditional laftehus log construction techniques, each building raised from hand-hewn pine in a manner that places it closer to the medieval Norwegian stabbur than to any contemporary hospitality typology. The turf roofs are not decorative: they're a direct continuation of a building practice that predates the hotel industry by several centuries. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. Older rooms carry grey-painted four-poster beds with panel detailing, floral scatter cushions, and tartan roman blinds — a Scandinavian take on country-house comfort, warm against walls of pale untreated pine. Newer suites lean toward a more considered Nordic palette: raw timber headboards set against large-check upholstery panels, cream linen sofas, sheepskin throws, and patterned roman blinds in muted greys. The double-height restaurant is the architectural centrepiece — exposed log walls rising to a mezzanine gallery with carved balustrades, a broad stone fireplace anchoring one end, and a run of white-painted sash windows framing the fjord beyond. The effect, in winter especially, is closer to a nineteenth-century hunting lodge than a hotel dining room.

"Locating the hotel was easy. Check-in was smooth. Got a tour of the hotel. The room and the view was excellent. Jacuzzies were nice. Beds were great and the breakfast was heavenly. Had a great time!"

"My husband and I stayed for three nights between Christmas and New Year. The hotel is stunning - very luxurious but still cosy - and with lots of nice places to sit and relax. The food was delicious - if we’d stayed longer we might have liked more variation ( a daily special could help here), as we’d tried every dish by the end of our short stay but we’d take less choice and such good quality over the other way around! The lunch menu is a bit odd - quite big dishes and not really what you felt like after a hotel buffet breakfast a few hours earlier, but what we had was still very good. The staff are just lovely - the manager Christian was very charming and I’d also like to give a special shout out to Federico in the spa who is not only a wonderful masseuse but also a qualified osteopath. He really knows what he’s doing and gave me some exercises to help with my wrist issues. We are already talking about coming back!"

"I’ve been to both Storfjord and Union Øye recently, and they are in a class of their own. I will return"

"Our short trip was absolutely flawless from start to finish. From the seamless airport transfers, through a delightful lunch and indulgent spa experience, to an incredibly enchanting boat house dinner, followed by nights of the gentlest, most restful sleep, and mornings with a perfect breakfast before returning to the airport — every moment was sheer perfection. Honestly, a few more days of this magical experience would have been an absolute dream for all of us"
