PB hotel design editorial

At nearly 2,000 metres above sea level on the rim of Oman's Al Hajar Mountains, where the plateau simply ends and the canyon drops away into haze, the architecture has to justify its presence against one of the most dramatically indifferent landscapes on earth. Alila Jabal Akhdar, which opened in 2014 across 30 rooms and suites, meets this challenge by building in the language of the mountain itself — dry-stacked local stone cladding the facades, low horizontal massing that keeps the structures below the plateau's natural silhouette, the curvilinear infinity pool pressed close to the cliff edge as though carved rather than constructed. The project draws on the vernacular fortified villages of the Hajar range, translating their rough-hewn materiality into a contemporary hospitality vocabulary without tipping into pastiche. Inside, dark-stained timber ceiling beams grid the whitewashed guestroom walls, the palette anchored by camel-toned linen drapes and flat-woven tribal rugs in deep reds and ochres. Handmade ceramic vessels line open shelving, woven decorative baskets punctuate the walls, and antique-style lanterns carry the lighting scheme away from anything corporate. The open-air dining terrace — decked in warm hardwood, roofed with stretched canvas panels stretched between raw timber posts — frames the Hajar ridgeline at dusk the way a good picture window should: without apology. The design's central achievement is restraint; every material choice defers to the geology outside rather than competing with it.

"Our stay at Alila Jabal Akhdar was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the attention to detail and impeccable service were evident in every aspect of our stay. Set high on the breathtaking cliffs of Jebel Akhdar, the hotel is truly spectacular, with stunning views that make it an unforgettable destination. Travelling with a son who has coeliac disease can often be challenging, but the team at Alila went above and beyond to ensure he could enjoy every meal without worry. They prepared an excellent range of delicious, in-house gluten-free dishes, and their understanding of cross-contamination was second to none. It was incredibly reassuring to know he was in such safe and knowledgeable hands. A heartfelt thank you to Chef Pankaj Walla and his team, who made my son's dining experience the best he has ever had. The gluten-free food was outstanding, and every meal we enjoyed during our stay was of an exceptional standard. Their care, creativity and attention to detail made all the difference. We would also like to give a special mention to Honey, one of our servers, who was so warm, friendly and attentive throughout our stay. In fact, every member of the serving team made us feel genuinely welcome and looked after, providing service that was consistently professional and heartfelt. The bar team also deserves recognition, especially Aargah, whose cocktails and mocktails were beautifully crafted, creative and absolutely delicious. There was so much to enjoy around the resort. We loved walking the Butterfly Trail, where we discovered the hotel's own honey farm, as well as its vegetable and herb gardens. The trail was thoughtfully designed with small activity areas along the way, making it a fun adventure for the children as well. A special thank you to Aaron, whose archery session was both engaging and expertly delivered. His knowledge and enthusiasm made the activity enjoyable for everyone. His stargazing experience was another highlight of our stay and created memories we'll treasure for years to come. To top it all off, the spa was outstanding. The Balinese massage was one of the best we've ever experienced—deeply relaxing and delivered with exceptional skill. Alila Jabal Akhdar has perfected the balance of luxury, warm hospitality and unforgettable experiences. From the breathtaking location and world-class dining to the thoughtful activities and truly outstanding staff, every detail exceeded our expectations. We left with wonderful memories and cannot wait to return. Highly recommended."

"Fabulous experience. It was simply magical. We went on a tour of the hydroponic gardens viewing their innovative programs. The fresh food, tomatoes, figs, pomegranates were out of this world. The desert has a peace which is unmatched, the sunrise and sunsets are out of this world and the staff were wonderful. Thanks to all the staff and thank you Mohammed Al-Kayyali for the tour and the fresh food!"
