PB hotel design editorial

Positioned along the Shatti Al-Qurum beachfront where Muscat's diplomatic quarter meets the Gulf of Oman, the Mandarin Oriental Muscat carries the central design challenge of contemporary Omani hospitality: how to honour a craft tradition of extraordinary richness — silverwork, woven textiles, geometric tilework — without reducing it to costume. The six-storey building, completed in 2018 with 158 rooms and suites, answers through restraint rather than spectacle, its cream-rendered facade and modulated balcony rhythm more closely aligned with residential quietude than resort exuberance. The interiors translate that discipline at every scale. Guestroom headboards are panelled in woven-pattern fabric that lifts directly from traditional Omani textile geometry, rendered in warm walnut and ivory tones, while brass pendant lanterns flank the bed in a gesture that suggests the souq without quoting it literally. Rugs carry swirling linear patterns in terracotta and indigo — colours drawn from the surrounding landscape and sea — laid over pale limestone-effect floors that keep the palette cool and grounded. The all-day dining restaurant draws the outdoors in through a glazed roof structure, exposed brick columns, and hanging planters cascading between amber globe pendants, the effect closer to a well-travelled Mediterranean farmhouse than a hotel restaurant. Outside, wicker pendant lanterns and retractable canvas shade a pool terrace furnished with teak-framed chairs, date palms standing sentinel between the water and the Gulf beyond.

"An exceptional Ramadan Iftar experience at the Mandarin Hotel. The buffet was beautifully curated with an outstanding selection of main courses and fresh salads, each dish rich in flavor and prepared to a very high standard. The variety and quality of the food were truly impressive. The dessert and ice cream corner was a highlight, and the warm Omani halwa added a wonderful authentic touch that I absolutely loved. The hospitality was outstanding — the staff were incredibly warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which elevated the entire experience. With the elegant atmosphere beside the swimming pool, the setting felt both relaxing and refined, making the evening even more enjoyable. A truly memorable Iftar that I would highly recommend.

"I've stayed at this hotel twice and had a wonderful time on both stays. We rented a car at the international airport, where valet parking is free for patrons. The driving in Muscat is very organized and easy to navigate. There was a bit of miscommunication in the pre-arrival communications before the most recent stay, but that doesn't reflect poorly on the overall experience. The rooms are elegant, well-stocked, well-appointed, and well designed nicely. The service staff is very helpful, accommodating, and kind. I haven't used the pool because the lounge chairs can be a bit overcrowded at times, but the reserved beach area is on a grassy field and is very nice and relaxing. Not to mention the fabulous cake shop and national perfume store in the lobby. The Dial "0" operator is helpful and the direct point of contact for all hotel-directed contact (reception, front desk, concierge, valet, room service, etc.), which can slow communications that need elevation. Overall, a wonderful stay, and I would stay again."

"Mandarin Oriental or the Chedi Muscat? The garden and pool area at the Mandarin didn't impress us as much as the gardens/pool at the Chedi, but the Mandarin had more luxurious rooms and was new. We opted for the modern Mandarin Oriental and were more than happy with our choice. The first highlight came right at the start: an upgrade to a sea view suite on the 5th floor with a great view. The suite and the entire hotel are modern, tasteful, and furnished with an oriental twist. The entire complex is much more beautiful than in the pictures. We ate at the Italian restaurant “Essenza” and at “Rawya” and were very satisfied both times. The hotel is in a quiet neighborhood, surrounded by luxury villas and embassies. The hotel is ideally located for many attractions such as the Opera and the Mosque. However, if you are looking for a fine sandy beach, you should choose a hotel further south."
