PB hotel design editorial

Drawn along a single axis from arrival court to Arabian Sea, the organizing geometry of The Chedi Muscat is its most arresting idea — a 103-metre long pool cutting through a corridor of date palms toward a steel pavilion gate framing the ocean horizon. Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston Architects conceived the property, which opened in 2002 on Muscat's Al Ghubrah shoreline, as a translation of Omani architectural tradition through a contemporary minimalist lens: whitewashed rendered walls, pointed arches derived from Islamic precedent, and low-rise pavilion blocks that defer to the landscape rather than dominating it. The 158 rooms and suites are arranged across these low structures, their interiors finished in polished terrazzo floors, dark-stained timber bed frames with woven rattan detailing, and niched alcoves housing traditional Omani pottery — objects treated as punctuation rather than decoration. The restraint carries through every decision. Louvred timber shutters filter the Gulf light without blocking it, cream-rendered walls glow warmly against the dark stone bases, and pendant lanterns with pierced metalwork reference the mashrabiya screen without replicating it literally. The restaurant space, framed by a succession of pointed white arches rising to a timber-clad pitched ceiling hung with crystal chandeliers, holds the property's most direct conversation between Omani craft tradition and European formality — a combination that, in Gathy's hands, settles into something more considered than contrast.

"We've just returned from an amazing week staying at the Chedi. From pick up at the airport to being dropped off again on our way home the Chedi exceeded our expectations. The pools and grounds were beautiful and well maintained and all the staff we experienced were polite and helpful. We stayed in a club terrace room which was nice and had everything we needed. As it was low season and hot, the hotel was only at about 30% occupancy which suited us as we still had our pick of sunbeds by the long pool at 10am each day. Things to note that as it was low season the hotel only had 3 restaurants open and the beach restaurant was closed but the 3 restaurants that were open were all superb with a great choice of food and excellent service. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to return next year."

"It was a truly wonderful stay with a relaxed and understated sense of luxury. We saw incredible wildlife — turtles in the water, as well as crabs and octopuses along the beach. The food was delicious, the breakfast was excellent, and the staff were exceptionally kind and attentive. At breakfast, Anton deserves special recognition for his outstanding service and dedication. The location itself is beautiful, with a lovely pool and a beachfront restaurant offering endless sunshine and perfectly chilled drinks served by the friendly team. Our farewell from the porter, Abdulrashid, was especially warm and heartfelt — it made us want to stay even longer. Overall, it was a very peaceful, relaxing, and rejuvenating stay."

"I stayed for a week with my mother in a Chedi terrace suite. From the moment we arrived (thank you hotel limo!), to the moment we left we felt welcomed and looked after. The staff here are what makes the difference but the grounds and pool/waterfront area are also stunning. The resort is spacious and peaceful, also immaculately maintained. Whilst the housekeeping, grounds staff, reception and concierge members were extremely helpful, it was the restaurant team who really shone for us. It was such a pleasure to be served by such kind and pleasant staff. We have been lucky to travel to many beautiful hotels and time and again, it is the staff who make the difference; nothing was too much trouble. The service felt really personal and so warm. We can’t wait to return to this gorgeous hotel and country. Thank you for a wonderful stay."

"This is our 2nd time at The Chedi and it didn’t disappoint. The service was immaculate. So many people to thank. Anton and Chibs in the restaurant where impressive, always going the extra mile and met with a smile from Trainee (Sonja) Padiyam at the beach always making sure we had ice water and fruit. Manawab at the lounge always remembering our drinks. Housekeeping keeping our suite sparkling clean. The biggest thankyou to Shwe Guest relations who made our 9 day stay so enjoyable, nothing was too much trouble. Well done team Chedi, we hope to come back soon."

"My husband arranged a birthday surprise at our beloved Chedi. We have stayed many times in the past, and the hotel always exceeds our expectations. The outstanding staff made my birthday celebration a memorable occasion, and my husband and I thank them all for looking after us so well. We really feel part of the Chedi family, and I would recommend this hotel to everyone. During these difficult times, the hotel still managed to provide a very high-quality service, and the attention to detail was exceptional. The Chedi truly represents the peace and tranquillity of Oman."
