PB hotel design editorial

Drawn along a single axis from arrival court to Arabian Sea, the organizing geometry of The Chedi Muscat is its most arresting idea — a 103-metre long pool cutting through a corridor of date palms toward a steel pavilion gate framing the ocean horizon. Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston Architects conceived the property, which opened in 2002 on Muscat's Al Ghubrah shoreline, as a translation of Omani architectural tradition through a contemporary minimalist lens: whitewashed rendered walls, pointed arches derived from Islamic precedent, and low-rise pavilion blocks that defer to the landscape rather than dominating it. The 158 rooms and suites are arranged across these low structures, their interiors finished in polished terrazzo floors, dark-stained timber bed frames with woven rattan detailing, and niched alcoves housing traditional Omani pottery — objects treated as punctuation rather than decoration. The restraint carries through every decision. Louvred timber shutters filter the Gulf light without blocking it, cream-rendered walls glow warmly against the dark stone bases, and pendant lanterns with pierced metalwork reference the mashrabiya screen without replicating it literally. The restaurant space, framed by a succession of pointed white arches rising to a timber-clad pitched ceiling hung with crystal chandeliers, holds the property's most direct conversation between Omani craft tradition and European formality — a combination that, in Gathy's hands, settles into something more considered than contrast.

"My wife and I had a short stay at the Chedi for a weekend trip and we thoroughly enjoyed our time. The facility is incredible and perfect to unwind and disconnect from the busy day to day. We were particularly impressed with the hospitality and kindness of the staff. A special shout out to Mr. Abdul Rasheed, he truly made us feel at home and we look forward to coming back and enjoying his and the rest of the staff’s company!"

"Our first visit to Oman was something of a whirlwind! Staying at The Chedi, a desert camp and then on to Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar before flying on to the Seychelles. Hence our visit to The Chedi was all too brief, we were so impressed though, we were determined to go back. Our second visit did not disappoint ,we stayed in a Balcony Suite which was lovely, clean and spacious with excellent views (which included the Long Pool). The food and restaurants within The Chedi were just as good as our last visit. The staff are very helpful and attentive. My only negative feedback is some of the female waitresses in the restaurants/at breakfast have a tendency to ignore female guests in preference to serving accompanying male guests first! (e.g. one evening at dinner my Husband was asked if he would like another glass of wine - at the precise same moment that my wine glass was removed from the table! My Husband made a point of turning to me and directly asking if I would like another glass of wine?). This type of behaviour happened 2 or 3 times during our first visit and I did discuss this with Management. I can see this has been addressed partially, but some lingering examples remain. And so, I believe, further training is required for some staff. Overall though, we had a wonderful stay and I’m sure we will visit again."

"We’ve had an amazing stay at The Chedi Muscat from start to finish, and it truly exceeded every expectation. Prior to arriving, I had contact with Deepak Sharma, who assured me that “we will leave no stone unturned in making sure your stay is special.” I can confidently say this is 1000% true. Although the hotel doesn’t have dedicated children’s facilities like a kids club, children are very much welcomed and thoughtfully catered for. My two children (aged 6 and 10) thoroughly enjoyed the well-crafted children’s menus at each restaurant and were made to feel incredibly special throughout our stay. It was also lovely to see other families enjoying the hotel too. The beauty of this hotel speaks for itself — a calm oasis in Muscat offering breathtaking sea and mountain views at the same time. From the immaculate grounds to the stunning pools, it really is a little piece of heaven. While every member of staff we encountered was wonderful, there are some truly exceptional individuals who are the heart and soul of this hotel: Firstly, Mr Khalil (Assistant Director of Food & Beverage), who went above and beyond to make my husband’s birthday unforgettable. He created an extraordinary evening for us, including a private candlelit dinner on the beach — a memory we will cherish forever. Bobo and Ruj looked after us so attentively throughout the evening and were especially kind and caring towards our children. A huge thank you as well to Deepak Sharma for helping to bring all of this together. Secondly, Chibs, the wonderful hostess at the main restaurant. Within just 24 hours, she remembered all our preferences and showed such genuine care — especially when my daughter had a fall. Her warmth and attention to detail truly stood out. Next, Mr Pandiyan at the Serai Pool — nothing is ever too much for him. He consistently went out of his way to make sure we were happy, and he built a lovely rapport with our son, making our children feel so welcome. He is an absolute credit to the hotel. Lester, also at the Serai Pool Cabana, was always on hand with a smile, ensuring we had everything we needed and that every meal was thoroughly enjoyable. I must also mention Zinto and the incredible housekeeping team. Their service, both morning and evening, is exceptional. Our suite was always immaculate, and the evening turndown service was such a thoughtful touch. They also arranged the most beautiful surprises for my husband’s birthday and our anniversary — we were truly touched. This has been a trip of a lifetime and one we will never forget. We cannot wait to return."

"Our stay at The Chedi Muscat was nothing short of extraordinary—an experience that blended luxury, serenity, and Omani elegance in the most beautiful way. From the moment we arrived, we were surrounded by stunning architecture, peaceful surroundings, and impeccable hospitality. The resort’s design, with its graceful blend of traditional Omani style and modern sophistication, created a truly calming and refined atmosphere. Every space—from the pristine pools to the lush gardens and private beachfront—felt like a sanctuary. The rooms were spacious, elegant, and thoughtfully designed, offering both comfort and a sense of quiet luxury. The dining experience was equally exceptional, with a variety of exquisite dishes that perfectly captured both international flavors and the richness of Omani cuisine. What truly elevated our experience was the warmth and professionalism of the staff. Every interaction was met with genuine care, making our group feel welcomed, valued, and completely at ease throughout our stay. A heartfelt thank you to SuncityOman for organizing and booking this incredible experience for our group. Everything was handled so seamlessly, allowing us to simply relax and enjoy every moment. Your attention to detail and commitment to excellence truly made this stay unforgettable. If you’re looking for a luxurious and peaceful escape in Oman, The Chedi Muscat is an absolute must. And with SuncityOman taking care of the arrangements, you can be sure your experience will be nothing less than perfect."
