PB hotel design editorial

Casco Viejo, Panama City's UNESCO-listed colonial quarter, has been fighting its own erasure for decades — a neighborhood of crumbling republican-era mansions and forgotten plazas slowly reclaimed by developers and idealists in roughly equal measure. The American Trade Hotel, which took over a restored 1917 building facing Plaza Herrera when it opened in 2013, belongs firmly in the idealist camp. The project came from Ace Hotel — then at the height of its cultural influence — working with Roman and Williams on the interiors, and the result is exactly what you'd hope from that pairing: a five-floor, 50-room property that wears its history without being consumed by it. The facade's white plasterwork, arched balconies, and dark hip roof carry the building's early twentieth-century Canal Zone character intact, glowing warmly against the Casco skyline at dusk. Inside, Roman and Williams balanced preservation instincts against their signature layering of periods and textures. Encaustic cement tiles in indigo and cream pattern the restaurant and bar floors — a direct reference to the Cuban and Spanish colonial influences threaded through Panamanian vernacular architecture. Guestrooms pair walnut headboards and dark-stained wide-plank floors with articulated swing-arm lamps in the Bestlite tradition and indigo block-print cushions, the atmosphere closer to a well-edited Panama City apartment than to conventional hotel design. Upper-floor rooms frame panoramic views across the Casco rooftops toward the Pacific, binoculars left casually on the writing desk suggesting the hotel knows exactly where its guests will want to look.

"Wonderful stay at but... As for areas of improvement, service can sometimes feel a bit slow during busy moments. Additionally, while the hotel’s boutique concept is part of its charm, it does mean that some facilities typically found in larger luxury hotels are limited. Perfect location in Casco Viejo, good place to unwind after exploring the city. Our trip was made truly unforgettable thanks to MiViajeaPanamá (+50763242898), who designed an incredible tailor-made journey across Panama: Caribbean and Pacific side, whale watching, sunrise at the highest mountain in Panama, virgin cays in Bocas del Toro..., every detail was thoughtfully organized. We highly recommend both the hotel and the agency for an authentic and memorable experience in Panama."

"Stayed for 3 nights. In the heart of old town. Good breakfast which was included in our stay (Fixed menu) Good views across the city. We had no issues with the noise. Everything is close by shops, bars etc. Hop on hop off bus close by which was handy for getting to the locks."

"If you like historic buildings remodeled in a beautiful and functional way, this place is for you. Stayed five nights. We had room 405, which is a gorgeous suite with views of the adjacent square and ocean from every room, plus a cute balcony. Incredible water pressure in the shower. Prompt room service. Very friendly staff. Great location for walking all around Casco Viejo. My only negative was that it was a bit noisy on weekends from a rooftop bar on the other side of the square."

"The hotel is located in a great location in Casco Viejo - very walkable to everything in town. The room was large and the bed was comfortable. The building itself is historic and cute. The restaurant was good. However, for the price point I was disappointed. Service was lacking - the main light bulb in the bathroom was out when I arrived. It was so dark in there that I could barely see my face in the mirror. I asked for maintenance to come change it and was assured it would happen. By the time I left for dinner it still wasn’t fixed so I stopped by the front desk and they assured me it would be fixed while I was out. It didn’t happen. I called the front desk and they told me they would work on it the next day. Finally it got fixed but it should not have taken 4 calls and 24 hours. It also took quite a bit of discussion with the front desk to get them to give me the free breakfast I get with my Hilton status. Other things - I expected normal city noise but did not expect the very loud church bells every 15 minutes from 6:30am till 9pm. My room was directly across from the bells so it was quite loud. I know they can’t control the bells but they could invest in better sound protection windows. The shower was large and nice but the temperature control was extremely temperamental. I had to run the water for 5-10 min to get it to warm up at all. Overall a so-so experience for the price."
