PB hotel design editorial

Sillar — the pale volcanic stone quarried from the slopes of El Misti that gives Arequipa its nickname, the White City — forms every wall, arch, and colonnade of the colonial mansion that became CIRQA. The seventeenth-century building sits within the UNESCO-protected historic centre, its carved baroque entrance portal and iron fanlight intact, a bell tower from an adjacent church visible over the compound wall. The conversion, completed around 2019, treated the fabric with deliberate restraint: barrel-vaulted ceilings were left raw and pitted, sillar block walls stripped to their quarried surface, original painted ceilings — ochre, sage, and terracotta botanical friezes — preserved as found above some of the hotel's sixteen rooms. The interiors place contemporary objects against this ancient ground without apology. Iron-frame beds, easel-mounted televisions, and salvaged timber chests furnish rooms whose walls have never seen plaster. The central courtyard, arcaded on one side in a run of sillar arches, is shaded by billowing linen sail canopies stretched between steel cables, with taupe metal dining chairs and stone-slab tables giving it the atmosphere of a working cloister repurposed for breakfast. The restaurant pushes the conversation further: a full-height steel-and-glass wall opens onto the courtyard while drum-shaded chandeliers hung with crystal drops hang above a long marble communal table — colonial grandeur and industrial precision sharing the same room without either conceding ground.

"My husband and I stayed at Cirqa for 3 days and it was soooo nice. The property itself is incredibly unique and the location is about a block from the main square. Our room was luxurious, historic and very quiet. The entire staff was very helpful, welcoming, and accomodating - it is clear that they care about the guest experience. We ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant which was a very intimate and inviting space. In the adjacent outdoor space, we had afternoon tea each day while enjoying the sunshine. I would HIGHLY recommend staying at Cirqa if in Arequipa."

"This is a beautiful property, with only eleven rooms, well-located and beautifully designed. The staff is close to perfection, among the nicest we have encountered anywhere. It has to be one of the best hotels we have stayed in, and one of the most comfortable. The restaurant was also wonderful, with very personalized service."

"Cirqa is an outstanding boutique hotel tucked just steps from Arequipa’s Plaza de Armas—close enough to the city’s best restaurants, shops, and bars, yet so captivating that you’ll question why you’d ever want to leave. We arrived with high expectations for this Relais & Châteaux property, and Cirqa more than lived up to them. Even our entry-level room was exceptional: minimalist yet warm, with thoughtful touches and calming textures. The historic architecture—vaulted ceilings, stone corridors, and courtyards framed by white volcanic sillar—creates a serene atmosphere that feels worlds away from the city outside. A small black-stone plunge pool in one of the courtyards was a blissful treat after long mornings exploring Arequipa. Breakfast and dinner are included in the stay, and both are superb. Breakfast is beautifully prepared, though service can be unhurried—something to keep in mind if you’re heading out early. We dined in the hotel restaurant for three nights, and each meal was outstanding. On my husband’s birthday, the staff surprised us with a complimentary bottle of champagne, a gesture that perfectly embodies Cirqa’s thoughtful hospitality. Dinner can be enjoyed either in the elegant restaurant or outside in the courtyard, warmed by crackling log fires. Afternoon tea and pastries served on the upstairs terrace add yet another layer of charm. Set within a restored 1540 monastery, the hotel blends ancient stone and contemporary design in a way that feels effortless and quietly luxurious. The rooftop terrace offers sweeping views of the city with Misti volcano on the horizon, while the interiors maintain a soothing, almost monastic calm. Cirqa is, simply put, a special place. But what truly elevates the experience is the staff—gracious, attentive, and genuinely invested in making each stay memorable. Our visit was nothing short of exceptional. Outstanding. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone at Cirqa for an unforgettable stay."
