PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across four hectares of the Sacred Valley floor, where the Andes rise sharply on all sides and the air carries the altitude of 2,800 metres, the casita village that forms Sol y Luna was conceived not as a conventional hotel but as a Peruvian hacienda fragmented into landscape. The Belgian-born founder Marilú Languasco commissioned a design that drew its material logic from the valley itself — fieldstone walls quarried locally, terracotta roof tiles pitched against the mountain backdrop, rendered adobe facades painted in the saturated ochres and corals that reference Andean textile tradition rather than Iberian colonial precedent. Inside, each of the 40-odd casitas functions as a small private dwelling, the interiors distinguished by large-format murals commissioned from Peruvian artists — works depicting maize, birds, and pre-Columbian iconography in the purple, amber, and burnt orange palette that runs consistently through the property. Dark carved timber bed frames, hand-knotted Andean rugs in lavender and saffron stripes, and terracotta tile floors ground the rooms in regional craft. The restaurant amplifies the same vocabulary: rough-hewn eucalyptus columns, exposed beamed ceilings, a domed adobe bread oven glowing at the room's centre, and a wrought-iron spiral stair connecting the mezzanine above. At dusk, the pool terrace — teak loungers arranged beneath a clean contemporary pergola — holds the valley light for longer than anywhere else on the property, the surrounding gardens thick with bougainvillea and the Urubamba peaks holding their silhouette against the darkening sky.

"Our stay at Sol y Luna was nothing short of spectacular. This property is an absolute masterpiece, perfectly blending luxury with the vibrant culture of the Sacred Valley. The grounds themselves are a destination—extensive, immaculately manicured gardens that feel like a private oasis. If you love nature, you'll appreciate the incredible abundance of birdlife right on the property (they even provide a bird-watching checklist, which was a wonderful touch). Our casita was well-appointed, incredibly cozy, and featured exceptionally comfortable beds that made for a perfect night's sleep after long days of exploring. We spent a dedicated rest day just relaxing around the gorgeous pool, soaking in the serene atmosphere and the dramatic mountain views, and we were so glad we did. The culinary experience was equally impressive, with delicious food served across both of their restaurants. Another major highlight was the picture-perfect horse stables. The Peruvian Paso horse show, featuring talented local dancers performing against the breathtaking backdrop of the mountains, was absolutely unforgettable. What truly elevates Sol y Luna, however, is the staff. Every single team member we encountered was kind, attentive, and deeply committed to ensuring we had a flawless stay. Vicente and Juan Carlos particularly stood out to us throughout our stay, but the entire staff is truly spectacular. It is a genuine five-star experience in every sense of the word. We cannot recommend it highly enough."

"Sol y Luna was the most exciting surprise of our trip to Peru! Our superior casita was absolutely stunning with views of the Andes surrounding us. The staff are welcoming and responsive within minutes. Special thanks to Vincent for his outstanding hospitality. The food was fresh and delicious; the gift shop had beautiful gifts. WAYRA is a short walk into another dimension of enjoyment. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and I had one of the best massages I've ever had from Pilar. We would definitely stay here again and venture out to town (Urubamba) if we had more time!"

"We just checked out of the hotel today. All the staff are very friendly and attentive. We arrived late on our first day, but they still treated us kindly. We were surprised to see the waitress very early the next morning, but she always greeted us with a smile. I did get sick, but it was due to the altitude, and I recovered very quickly because the rooms are so comfortable. We really enjoyed the breakfast, and the food is very fresh, as is the dinner at both restaurants. Jakeline, Paul, and Vicente, thank you; you are an excellent team."

"The staff is very helpful, the place is beautiful, the rooms are super comfortable, Jhakeline was very attentive to all the services, and her food recommendations were excellent. We loved everything. On our last day, we were lucky enough to attend the reopening of the restaurant, which had been under renovation. It was very nice. We had a problem with the drinks, but Paul resolved it. Thanks, guys!"
