PB hotel design editorial

A late nineteenth-century tenement on ul. Szpitalna, one of the streets threading between Kraków's Planty gardens and the Old Town's medieval core, provides Hotel Indigo Kraków with its Neo-Renaissance shell — sage-green render, white stucco window surrounds with arched pediments on the piano nobile, and a rusticated granite base that anchors the facade firmly in the Austro-Hungarian civic tradition that shaped this part of the city. The building's four floors were converted and extended upward to accommodate 59 rooms, the roofline pushed to create a terrace level that now frames unobstructed views across the surrounding low-rise cityscape. Inside, the design resists any single period register, instead moving between references with deliberate eclecticism — a strategy native to the IHG Indigo brand, which asks each property to embed local character into its interiors. Here that translates into tufted velvet headboards in deep teal set against walls hung with decorative ceramic plates, exposed red-brick structural columns left visible within the guest rooms, and raw board-formed concrete ceilings sitting against sage and cream plasterwork. The restaurant below a glazed rooflight lines its banquette wall with a floor-to-ceiling gallery hang of contemporary illustration and print, the long blue velvet seating running against hexagonal stone-effect floor tiles. On the rooftop terrace, Kartell Masters chairs in white punctuate a space shaded by a ribbed canvas pergola — the medieval spires of Kraków visible just beyond the parapet.

About

In the heart of the city and next to Florian Gate, the largest gate into the historical city, sits the Hotel Indigo® Krakow - Old Town. Housed in a stunning 19th century building. The hotel design has been inspired by three Polish painters from different centuries and that heritage has been subtly brought into our rooms and our public areas. Old Kleparz market is opposite our hotel and we are walking distance to Krakow's Main Square, St. Mary's Basilica, the Clothes Hall, the main shopping street (Florianska), Wawel Castle and the Jewish district.

"Excellent hotel. Spotlessly clean, lovely room, friendly helpful staff and a superb breakfast on. No complaints. Also made use of the gym - which was a little tight and the sauna every day. It’s a short walk to the old town - expect about 12000 steps a day. Would definitely recommend"

"What an absolute gem of a hotel! Just a short stroll from the Old Town and the railway station, it is in a great location that is an ideal base for exploring the city. The atmosphere is that of a really chilled, relaxing place to stay with a great fusion of modern style and art-nouveau / art-deco chic, with really comfortable soft furnishings, particularly in the bar / lounge area. Our room was spacious, and although no bath, the shower was more than adequate with a great supply of toiletries, towels changed on a daily basis, robes and slippers provided and a huge king-size bed that was ridiculously comfortable. Everywhere was spotlessly clean, and it just feels fresh without being clinical as some hotels can. As far as value is concerned, I would say say that it is bang on, and to top it all, the staff are fantastic... incredibly welcoming, warm, friendly, helpful, informative and genuinely wanting to make your stay an enjoyable one. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough - thoroughly enjoyable stay, and we will most certainly be coming back at some point."

"I stayed at this hotel by recommendation from my Daughter who stayed shortly before me. It was very close to all the sights. The main station was 4 minutes walk and the main square was 5 minutes walk. We had a warm welcome when we arrived. Check in was very straight forward. Our room was one the first floor(room 101) and it was beautiful. Huge high ceilings. Beautiful bedding and stylish. Bottled water was supplied. There was a fridge, iron, ironing board, toiletries and white sort towels. The Tv was nice but only 1 English speaking channel which was CNN news. Even the subtitles were in Polish. The hotel was very quiet at night. I had a really lovely sleep but the room was slightly warm so I had to adjust the temperature to suit my own needs. The breakfast was from 7-11am so plenty of time to have a lie in and still get breakfast. It was so nice. There was a nice choice of cooked items ordered to your liking plus tea, coffee, juice and milks. Cereals, meats, cheeses and salad and fresh fruit. The quality was that of a high class hotel. The waitresses and chefs were brilliant. Good and polite service and very professional and attentive."

"Pros; -Mostly clean -Modern decor -10 minute walk to old town -Good transport links -Staff so friendly Cons; -Where they have used concrete boards this means every foot step can be heard. Due to early tours/ being a town for parties people return and leave at all hours so sleep is constantly disturbed. More sound proofing is needed however no street noise. All doors are heavy fire doors and slam loudly. More disturbed sleep. -All channels are non English (that’s fine) but they have restricted the subtitles so you cannot change them to English so pointless having a tv. They have also restricted the tv to prevent you pairing your own streaming services. -None of USBs worked -Stains on carpets -Fault with our room key only worked if we didn’t use the electric do not disturb function - Slippers were more like sanitary towels -small attention to cleaning our refillable bottles had product all down them and hard lumps hanging from the nozzles. Shows not much attention to the clean inbetween guests Problems were raised with reception and all were very kind but nothing could be done."
