PB hotel design editorial

Beneath a Renaissance tenement on Szczepańska Street, within a few steps of Kraków's Rynek Główny, Gothic vaulted cellars dating to the fourteenth century now shelter a swimming pool framed by bare medieval brick — perhaps the most arresting argument any Central European hotel has made for leaving old fabric entirely alone. Stary Hotel, which took over this sequence of historic townhouses and opened in 2007, treats the layers of accumulated time not as a problem to be resolved but as the primary material of the interior. The restaurant, visible through arched street-level openings in the limestone facade, unfolds beneath a ribbed Gothic vault whose stone columns spring from a chequerboard floor of dark and pale marble, burnt-orange velvet chairs introducing the only note of deliberate contemporary warmth. The guest rooms carry that same philosophy upward through the building's upper floors. Walls of pale ochre limewash retain ghost marks and fragments of earlier plaster, medieval friezes left exposed along cornices rather than restored to false completeness. Dark-stained walnut beds and leather sofas sit against surfaces that feel actively archaeological, lit by minimal linear wall fixtures that avoid competing with the architecture they illuminate. The interplay between salvaged textile rugs, aged concrete ceilings, and carefully incomplete wall finishes gives each room a quality closer to a scholar's apartment than a conventional hotel suite — evidence that in Kraków, where the medieval city survived the twentieth century largely intact, restraint can be the most sophisticated design choice available.

"We had a lovely stay at Hotel Stary. It’s really well located next to the main square but at the same time quiet and peaceful. The rooftop bar has an amazing view and lovely in the sunshine. The spa is really unique and we were the only ones there both times we used it. Staff were very helpful and sorted an early check in as we flew into Krakow very early. Would definitely recommend for a good quality hotel in Krakow. Our room was also huge and very comfortable bed with large bathroom."

"A stunning boutique hotel, amazing quirky architecture blending original stone and brick with glass, marble and concrete for a stunning effect. Rooms appointed beautifully. The cocktail bar is welcoming and inventive. The pool/sauna/steam in the basement is calming and soothing. Breakfast was excellent. Location unbeatable, right on the old town square."

"Beautiful Entrance, but Disappointing Stay I really wanted to love Hotel Stary, but unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the expectations—especially considering the price point. The Good The reception and lobby area are absolutely stunning. It’s grand, full of character, and creates a fantastic first impression when you walk through the doors. The staff at the front desk were professional and welcoming. The Not-So-Good • The Pool: This was the biggest letdown. I specifically chose this hotel because of the pool, but it was unusable. It was easily the coldest hotel pool I’ve ever experienced. If you’re booking this property specifically for a relaxing swim, you might want to reconsider. • The Room: While the lobby is magnificent, the room felt very dated. It lacked the polished, luxury feel I expected after seeing the common areas. • Room Service: We ordered breakfast to the room, but the order was incorrect. It’s a small detail, but when you’re paying for a premium stay, you expect the basics to be handled with more care. Summary: A great location with a lovely aesthetic in the public spaces, but the freezing pool and room service errors made for a frustrating stay"

"Just got back from a 2 night stay in krakow. This hotel is absolutely stunning! The rooms are beautiful, big and clean. The hotel is just so gorgeous and the staff were lovely. The hotel is prime location just off the square where every thing is. When I come back I will return to this hotel. Go to Piwnica Pod Baranami bar it’s so quirky and cosy we stayed in there hours and made our way through the drinks menu! Morskie oko is a restaurant I’d highly recommend the food was just gorgeous and the potato dumplings are a must! You need to book before as it’s extremely busy. Lovely weekend, krakow has a piece of my ❤️"

"This hotel is in the absolute perfect location, about 40 steps into the main square The room was perfect, huge room and bathroom with massive walk in shower and a lovely big bath (room A219) Every member of staff so friendly, helped me organise balloons for my husbands birthday. Used the spa twice and was so relaxing, the pool a little cool but nice after the sauna and steam room Would definitely recommend this hotel"
