PB hotel design editorial

Beneath a Renaissance tenement on Szczepańska Street, within a few steps of Kraków's Rynek Główny, Gothic vaulted cellars dating to the fourteenth century now shelter a swimming pool framed by bare medieval brick — perhaps the most arresting argument any Central European hotel has made for leaving old fabric entirely alone. Stary Hotel, which took over this sequence of historic townhouses and opened in 2007, treats the layers of accumulated time not as a problem to be resolved but as the primary material of the interior. The restaurant, visible through arched street-level openings in the limestone facade, unfolds beneath a ribbed Gothic vault whose stone columns spring from a chequerboard floor of dark and pale marble, burnt-orange velvet chairs introducing the only note of deliberate contemporary warmth. The guest rooms carry that same philosophy upward through the building's upper floors. Walls of pale ochre limewash retain ghost marks and fragments of earlier plaster, medieval friezes left exposed along cornices rather than restored to false completeness. Dark-stained walnut beds and leather sofas sit against surfaces that feel actively archaeological, lit by minimal linear wall fixtures that avoid competing with the architecture they illuminate. The interplay between salvaged textile rugs, aged concrete ceilings, and carefully incomplete wall finishes gives each room a quality closer to a scholar's apartment than a conventional hotel suite — evidence that in Kraków, where the medieval city survived the twentieth century largely intact, restraint can be the most sophisticated design choice available.

"I stayed at the hotel with my wife in late December and had a very positive experience from start to finish. My interactions with the reception team—both over the phone and in person—were excellent. The staff was consistently professional, kind, and accommodating. We made use of the spa facilities, which are located below street level and offer a unique, intimate ambiance. It’s a great space to relax, with a calm and soothing atmosphere throughout. We also had breakfast at the hotel, which featured a well-stocked selection of items. Once again, the staff stood out for their friendliness and attentiveness. The bar deserves special mention. The two bartenders I encountered—a gentleman and a lady—were clearly well-trained and prepared excellent drinks. The bar itself offers an impressive selection of high-end spirits, easily meeting the expectations of even discerning guests. The location is a major advantage. The hotel is just a short walk from the Old Town square and Sukiennice, and the train station is no more than a 10–12 minute walk away. It’s truly a strategically situated property. All staff members spoke excellent English, which made the stay even more comfortable. I had previously stayed at this brand’s location in Łódź, which is what drew me to book here—and it did not disappoint. We will definitely be returning."

"Given this is a five star hotel I expected so much more from the bedroom. It was dark with dark heavy furniture and inadequate lighting. We had to leave lights on in the bathroom to give more illumination in the room, and use the torch on our phone to see properly. Everything about the room was drab and didn’t leave me feeling uplifted. The bed was worthy of a cheap hotel. It was low with a thin mattress that left me with back ache after sleeping there for four nights. Pillows were soft and gave little support. The bathroom was adequate. For me the large bath was dangerous because it was so difficult to get out of it safely. There should have been a non-slip mat to prevent falls. On the good side the public space of this hotel is stunning. The combination of the steel and glass bolted onto the remains of a 15th century house was incredible. I don’t know why other reviews mention the stunning reception because I thought it was drab and poorly lit. They might have been referring to the adjacent bar area, which is beautiful. The staff were helpful and polite. Breakfasts were good, and my one evening meal in the main restaurant was very good."

"I was treated to a 3 day trip with my daughter by her and others in the family, so I had nothing to do with the actual booking Upon arrival we were greated with a lovely automated extrance, located all of about 20m from the main Centrum. Staff all pleasant & helpful. The interior is pretty impressive, grandiose even. Everything is laid out in a very pleasant way, from the reception & bar to the indoor spa and roof top bar. Our double rooms were luxurious, the bathroom had a deep bath and a separate rain shower with side jets as well as handheld spray. The aircon/heating a little more difficult to control, my daughters room got really hot, they did send someone but he couldnt fix it, a little disapponting. Also the sink tap in my room, it was fine with cold water in the evening, but in the mornings only hot. Again I did report it but nothing was done. Lighting in the showers was, well non existent. These are all littke things, but if you are paying a premium for a quality hotel, you kind of expect perfection. Despite the above niggles, we really did enjoy our stay, very comfortable. Perfect location and lovely staff. Note to hotel - please provide slightly bigger cups/mugs, Brits like a decent cuppa in the morning. I had taken own teabags as knew they woudnt exist, and please make room in the minibar for our milk. I get the rest of europe might think we weird putting milk in tea, but we do :) In their defence, I didnt ask for bigger cups or room in the fridge, so maybe my own fault Back to the location, I can not imagine how it could have been better, literally just off the main square with its wealth of things to see, places to eat (from cafe/bars to restuarants), awesome delicattessens there are alos a few xmas like markets, they sell all the little trinkets and keepsakes, but it really is lovely. Thanks"

"We had a lovely stay at Hotel Stary. It’s really well located next to the main square but at the same time quiet and peaceful. The rooftop bar has an amazing view and lovely in the sunshine. The spa is really unique and we were the only ones there both times we used it. Staff were very helpful and sorted an early check in as we flew into Krakow very early. Would definitely recommend for a good quality hotel in Krakow. Our room was also huge and very comfortable bed with large bathroom."
