PB hotel design editorial

At the southern tip of Portugal, where the Guadiana River meets the Spanish border at Vila Real de Santo António, a late nineteenth-century belle époque palace once known as the Grande Hotel Guadiana has been restored into one of the Algarve's most quietly confident addresses. Grand House, as it is now called, preserves the original stone facade in full — its Pombaline-influenced symmetry, wrought-iron balconies, and ornate parapet detailing still facing the riverside promenade exactly as they did when the building first established itself as the grandest structure on the square. The interiors carry a different register: a colonial-inflected eclecticism that draws on Portugal's Atlantic trading history, mixing crystal chandeliers and convex gilded mirrors with rattan bistro chairs, navy-and-white striped curtains, and woven palm-blade ceiling fans in the dining room. Guest rooms are dressed in a warm neutral palette — linen headboards, white cotton bedding, parquet floors, botanical prints in bamboo frames — with the best of them opening directly onto the river through tall French doors framed by original wrought-iron balustrades, the marina of Vila Real laid out below. The beach club annex, visible from across the estuary, takes a deliberately contrasting approach: a low whitewashed pavilion with a pool terrace cut into the rocks above the sand, the Algarve's characteristic sandstone and pine scrub stretching behind it. Together the two buildings describe the full range of what this corner of the south offers.

"Everything about this hotel is wonderful. From the minute we arrived to when we checked out the staff made us feel so welcome. The room was spacious and the furnishings were beautiful. The whole hotel is spotless. The breakfast was amazing and the staff in the dining room were so attentive. The atmosphere is so chilled, this is by far the best hotel we have stayed in. I want to give a mention to Dulche on reception she was so lovely and made our day when she was on. She really is a lovely lady. Always welcomed us with a smile. If you are looking for luxury this hotel is the one. It really is excellent value for money. The location is brilliant for getting around. Thank you to all the staff for making our holiday experience the best ever."

"Superb hotel in the very best possible location right on the waterfront. We were there to celebrate our 40th anniversary so booked the fabulous suite which was very calm clean and spacious. On our arrival the staff at reception were so lovely and welcoming. We had a bottle of fizz and some petit fours in our room. Breakfast was a mix of an excellent choice of buffet and cooked breakfast or prepared fruit and yoghurt and granola . We enjoyed the bar at night time sitting at the balcony window. The hotel has a beach club about a 5 minute drive away where you can swim and lounge and enjoy some very nice lunch options. They also offer cocktails and wines etc . Absolutely 100% recommended! Will definitely be booking if we’re back in Vile Real. Every staff member was so friendly and helpful as well , so nice ."

"What a lovely hotel. Will definitely return. All staff are amazing- everyone we met at hotel and beach club could not have been any friendlier or accommodating. We had a standard room it was size of standard hotel room, not spacious but big enough. My only point would be limited storage space but for few days it’s ample. Breakfast was perfect self service buffet with menu choices also - fast service but calm and relaxed - as we left early on last day for flight we had a breakfast box which was great Great little bar can pop a chair onto tiny terrace with lovely view and we did not discover till last day small little outside viewing point with small table and two chairs at top of hotel - could make more of this space Hotel immaculately clean and beach club Beach club calm and quiet perfect for relaxing- we walked most of the time 20 minutes or €5 taxi. We spent 1/2 day going over to Spain via ferry (port opposite hotel) €2.40 each way We had a lovely day in Tavira £16 in uber - took ferry to island and had a fantastic meal by river in Terraze If thinking of booking I would definitely recommend"

"My friend and I had a fantastic stay at Hotel Bordoy Grand House in Vila Real St Antonio. From the moment we arrived, Dulce on reception greeted us warmly, offered us some water and glass of port. She then helped us up to our wonderful river facing room - which had a bottle of Bubbly, a choice of beautifully presented little cakes and bottle of water waiting for us as it was a special birthday. Room was clean, fresh and had slippers, and lovely white dressing gowns. Breakfast was amazing - a menu of hot dishes to choose from and an excellent buffet. Highly recommend this hotel."
