PB hotel design editorial

Perched above the Algarve coastline near Albufeira, where stone pines frame Atlantic views that have drawn northern Europeans south for decades, W Algarve opened in 2021 as Marriott's first W-branded property on Portuguese soil. The white sculptural facade — curved volumes clad in a perforated screen that filters southern light while referencing Moorish lattice traditions — sets the building apart from the terracotta resort vernacular that dominates this stretch of coast. From above, the freeform pool unfolds in wave-like curves across a timber deck, a circular bar pavilion with a tensile canopy anchoring one end of the terrace in a gesture that feels more beach club than hotel forecourt. Inside, the interiors lean into the W brand's characteristic high-colour playfulness without losing a thread of Mediterranean reference. Guestroom headboards carry ornate arched profiles with backlit plasterwork detailing drawn loosely from Andalusian and Moorish decorative traditions, the forms softened by pale chalky wall finishes and grounded by multi-coloured block-stripe rugs in ochre, cobalt, and blush. Duplex suites gain an oak staircase and double-height glazing that frames the Atlantic horizon like a painting. The all-day restaurant deploys yellow woven-rope lounge chairs against a graphic black-and-white patterned floor, stone-clad columns, and hanging greenery — a palette vivid enough to read from the pool terrace. The 134-room property manages, more often than not, to balance resort spectacle with something that carries the warmth of the Portuguese south.

"The Location is beautiful however everything is dirty and the staff are so rude also nothing was open in the hotel plus it was full loud screaming kids so no where near the atompshere of a five star level. The atmosphere was just loud kids and not a sense of cool vibes which a w hotel should be. The rooms were big however missing English breakfast tea and has not been re stocked properly. I would highly recommend you not to come to this hotel unless you're up for a rude and place full of kids and where they cannot do five star service."

"I am staying locally and had wanted to visit the spa, I had looked online and could book to use their steam rooms and saunas etc, I wish I had just booked online as plenty of availability but I walked by and popped in to ask, I was greeted by two very snooty staff members who were extremely unwelcoming and said there was no room. When we pointed out I could book online they said it wasn’t appropriate because of the smell of the food outside! The didn’t want me there. Very stuck up. Horrible attitude. I had dinner with my family the night we arrived and enjoyed it but very disappointing attitude from staff and who think they are better than the customers that visit them! They work in a spa- not exactly the kind of people who should be judging others! Next time we won’t stay here."

"W Algarve – Stay Summary Overall * 5★ stay overall despite some issues We Previously stayed at W Dubai (15 nights) and considered it one of the best hotels in the world W Hotels seen as a perfect concept: unique to location with a luxury twist. This stay felt mixed but still very positive overall. Before Arrival / Communication * Sent multiple emails prior to stay, especially regarding travelling with a 10-month-old baby * Responses were vague, incomplete, or missing key information * Lack of clarity caused confusion during the stay Spa / Facilities * Not informed in advance about €20 fee for 3-hour use of indoor jacuzzi/sauna/steam room, even though I’d asked. * Asked whether baby could use loungers but response unclear * Staff initially unsympathetic to travelling with a baby * Staff later allowed splitting the 3-hour access across two days (appreciated gesture) Payments / Billing * Confusing payment system: * Either €100 per night deposit OR card on pay at the end of stay which we opted for the latter . * Unexpected charges appeared during stay, random amounts of money charged to my account at random times. * Miscommunication with reception resulted in account being closed, had our door knocked by Restaurant manager had to visit room to request payment. Location * Nearest shop (Apolonia) about 25-minute walk or 5–10 minute taxi ride, despite the priors classing the shops as ‘close to hotel’. Half Board Confusion * Half board promised to include in-room dining (confirmed via email) On arrival, staff said this was not available * Conflicting information about spend allowance (€50 vs €55) * Service charge added to everything * Daily confusion/arguments over where half board credits could be used Toyota Event • Toyota event during first 4 days of 8-day stay • 10–15 Toyota staff occupied small lobby area • Limited indoor space made this more noticeable, especially during rain • Cars displayed outside hotel affected access to Ubers • Felt event could have been held in another area Room/ground 5* • Room was absolutely stunning • One of the best rooms ever stay, we was given an incredible upgrade based on our membership . Staff Highlights • Elias (pool) • Victor (breakfast) • Carmen • a few others as well who I can’t remember their names. We’re all world class . The type of 5* customer service you’d expect and more . Unfortunately, I don’t know if it was language barrier but I felt the guy doing the room service to be very passive aggressive. When I came to him trying to charge me for something that was included in the half board charge. During breakfast we was kindly given a takeaway box for our little girl to take some sandwiches. (10 months old) And the next day , one of the waitresses , said that we was a ‘talking point’ of their end of shift meeting and been told specifically not to give us a box to take food away for the baby. That felt very embarrassing. When we were offered it the prior day , and to think the staff had been ‘discussing us’ . Also I didn’t particularly like the reception check in girl . She was the one that caused most of the issues with the half board service and even the other use of lounge dining. The only open to us was the ‘paper moon’ which we found was world class . The staff were so friendly and the food was as good as I’ve ever had in some cases . We eat at torno subito in the W in Dubai , and this one in my opinion was much better , staff wise and food wise , even though torno had 2 Michelin stars."
