PB hotel design editorial

A nineteenth-century palacete on the quiet streets of Aveiro, its salmon-pink facade and wrought-iron balconies the kind of aristocratic Portuguese townhouse architecture that usually ends up subdivided into flats, was instead converted into MS Collection Aveiro — Palacete de Valdemouro, a boutique property that sets the ornamental ambitions of the original building against a decidedly contemporary decorative sensibility. The courtyard tells the tension immediately: traditional calçada paving laid in geometric crosshatch patterns, a modest lap pool, and iron garden furniture arranged beneath parasols — and then, covering the entire party wall, a large-scale portrait mural in the manner of street artist Vhils, whose stencilled faces scraped into plaster surfaces have become one of Portugal's most recognisable contemporary art signatures. Inside, the interiors navigate between the palace's original plasterwork — extravagant coffered ceilings thick with foliate moulding — and a layered decorative scheme that draws on deep bottle greens, cognac leather, herringbone parquet, and chinoiserie-influenced wall panels. Guest rooms offer two distinct moods: one anchored in cerulean blue with a botanically illustrated headboard wall and gilded French chair, the other darker and more theatrical, pairing a cloud-patterned fabric panel behind a tan leather bed frame with forest-green bathroom walls and a gilt Baroque mirror. The bar is the most resolved space — its fluted jade-green ceramic counter set beneath a black lacquered coffered ceiling, brass pendant lights pulling the whole room toward an Art Deco register that feels genuinely earned rather than applied.

"We stayed here during a visit to Aveiro and came away genuinely impressed. The hotel is beautiful — well-maintained, elegant without being stuffy, and the rooms are spacious and thoughtfully appointed. It feels like a place that takes pride in the details. Breakfast: Fantastic spread, but don’t overthink it — just get the croissant eggs benedict. You can thank me later. Bar: Asked for a French 75 and got a perfect one. That’s all I needed to know. Location: Great spot for exploring Aveiro. Easy to get around from here. The staff — and this is the main reason I’m writing this review: Every single person we interacted with — front desk, concierge, bell staff, and the restaurant and bar team — was warm, friendly, and genuinely helpful. Not in a scripted, going-through-the-motions way, but in a way that made us feel like guests rather than transactions. That level of consistency across an entire property doesn’t happen by accident. Someone is doing something right here. Price: Higher end for the area, but given the quality of the experience, we didn’t feel shortchanged for a moment. Highly recommend. Would return without hesitation."

"This palacete is on a side street and as you pull up you have no idea of how grandiose the hotel actually is. It is an oasis in the city center with beautiful facilities both indoors and outdoors. What truly makes this hotel stand out is it's staff. There was not one person we came in contact with that didn't go above and beyond in their service. The hotel management should be commended for the service they provide and I don't say this lightly. The breakfast is outstanding and the location walking distance to Aveiro's many offerings for dining, shopping and tourism was awesome! And the gift of champagne, strawberries and cream for our anniversary was a lovely touch!!"

"What a beautiful hotel! Our room was very comfortable and clean. We were so pleasantly surprised when they brought us to our room that they had a bottle of sparkling wine and strawberries with cream for our anniversary! Thank you for making us feel so special. The food was spectacular and the spa was lovely as well. the only thing that threw us off was that we arrived around 2:15 pm and they said check in was at three, not that the room wasn't ready, but that check in was at 3, so we had to go for a stroll and wait. A bit disappointing. When we were checking out, two couples were shown to their rooms, and it was only 1 pm! Not sure why we had to wait till 3."

"Deserves every one of it's 5 stars . The Palacete de Valdemouro is absolutely fantastic - we stayed only two nights -if we had realised how fabulous this hotel is and how wonderful Aveiro is, we would have stayed longer !! Our room overlooking the pool was large with two windows and juliet style balconies. Beautifully furnished a very comfortable bed and well stocked bathroom . The breaksfast was incredible,so many choices . Just look at the photos posted by other TA posters to see how fantastic it is ..and it's available from 7.30 to 11.00am. There's a Spa ..a gym , indoor pool , Sauna , jacuzzi, Turkish bath, and a sensory shower (remember to bring your swimming cap) .Plus the outdoor pool with loungers . Dinner is availble in the Prosa restaurant . 19.00-22.30. There's a lounge area - once again TAdvisor has some excellent photos . When we arrived the staff were there to help with luggage and to welcome us . Throughout our short stay they were so helpful with suggestioins for fish restaurants , even booked us on one of the short canal trips from the harbour . All in all it was a fabulous stay . It's a pity that Aveiro to (to some) is just a place passed on the train from Lisbon to Porto . I would encourage you to stop and stay at this amazing hotel and enjy Aveiro."
