PB hotel design editorial

A nineteenth-century quinta perched above the terraced schist vineyards of the UNESCO-listed Douro Valley provided the foundation for Six Senses Douro Valley, which opened in 2015 following a careful restoration that preserved the manor's terracotta-roofed towers and salmon-rendered facades while inserting a thoroughly contemporary hospitality programme within and around it. The project, overseen with Portuguese sensitivity to the agricultural landscape, kept the formal box-hedged gardens, the ranks of cypress and palm, and the stepped terracing that has defined this valley's relationship with the Douro River for centuries. Where the historic quinta governs the upper ground, the newer accommodation wings push the architecture in a sharper direction — floor-to-ceiling black-framed glazing, warm oak millwork, and woven grass-cloth wall panels that absorb the river light filtering up from below. Bedrooms are arranged around stepped split-level plans, with low-slung dark-stained consoles separating sleeping and sitting zones, and teak-decked terraces cantilevered toward vineyard panoramas. The restaurant draws on the agricultural vernacular more directly: exposed granite masonry surrounds a stone chimney breast, wide-plank timber floors carry the warmth, and banquette seating upholstered in natural linen and geometric-patterned weaves sits beneath a coffered board-formed concrete ceiling hung with rod-and-crystal pendant chandeliers. The infinity pool, clad in ipe timber decking with dark-tiled water, frames the valley in a long still line toward the mountains.

"Absolutely fantastic resort in a gorgeous setting of the valley and the wineries. Breathtaking views from the rooms, restaurants, spa and lots of walking trails. The food is amazing, breakfast is particularly outstanding. Lots of extras everywhere, including rooms. Wine tastings are a must and wine program is very impressive. Enjoyed forests and gardens, food and wine, cocktail hour and spa, but the highlight is the service from super friendly staff. Reception and the facilities tour set the tone. The rooms are very modern and well appointed. The showers are great, but would prefer a bit more separation from the main area. That is the only thing I would change. Truly 5 star experience and would compliment the staff on the job well done."

"Our stay at Six Senses Douro Valley was truly memorable. The property is luxurious and beautifully designed, with spacious rooms and gorgeous views. Honestly, there isn’t a single place on the resort grounds where the scenery doesn’t take your breath away—the vineyards and valley views are simply spectacular. Breakfast was fabulous. Almost everything is organic and house-made… even the ketchup! The attention to detail really shows. The staff throughout the resort are warm, friendly, and incredibly attentive. The wine tasting at this resort is fantastic. Their sommelier team is knowledgeable and certified, and they create a truly special experience. We did two private tastings while we were there and honestly they were much better than the tastings we did at the Quintas. If you know wine, are a bit of a wine snob, or are simply passionate about wine, a tasting here is absolutely mandatory. A special mention to Bruno, the sommelier, who curated an outstanding private tasting for us showcasing some of the best wines of the Douro. The resort’s wine list is expansive and thoughtfully put together, covering wines from all over Portugal, which makes dining there a real pleasure for wine lovers. A big shout-out to the amazing staff who made our stay so special: Johnny, Renato, and Joao at the bar; Bruno the sommelier; Dina, Lucas, and Darcy at breakfast; Inash at dinner; Rachel and Louisa at reception; and Tatiana and Joana at the spa. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome. My husband has a nut allergy, and while many dishes naturally included nuts, the team was incredibly accommodating—even preparing special nut-free pastries for him at breakfast. While the resort excels in so many areas, I do have a bit of feedback. Given the very high price point, it would be nice if more of the activities—such as yoga, ceramic painting, or guided walks in the woods—were included. Charging for materials is understandable, but many of the activity fees felt quite high. The mattresses definitely need an upgrade, the are sagging are uncomfortable. Another small point: the resort has a wonderful sustainability initiative and provides filtered water in reusable glass bottles for guests in the rooms, which is fantastic. However, the same water is charged at €6 in the restaurants. Since most diners are hotel guests, it feels like this could reasonably be complimentary. Overall, we had a wonderful stay at this beautiful resort and truly appreciated the thoughtful service. We will definitely look forward to experiencing Six Senses in other parts of the world."

"Our breakfast experience at Six Senses was truly unforgettable. Saying it exceeded expectations would honestly be an understatement. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed. The atmosphere was calm and beautifully curated, the food exceptional in quality and presentation, but what made the experience truly special were the people. Lucas, Dina, Ricardo and Jéssica were outstanding, attentive, warm, and incredibly thoughtful throughout. Their kindness felt natural and sincere, not forced, and that made all the difference. They treated us with such care and attention to detail that it turned a simple breakfast into a memorable moment. I would also like to apologize if I am forgetting anyone’s name, every single person we interacted with contributed to making us feel valued and genuinely cared for. A special note: the level of attention and generosity shown to us was something we truly appreciated, and it did not go unnoticed. Thank you to the entire team for an exceptional experience. It will remain in our memory with fondness."
