PB hotel design editorial

Forty metres above the Atlantic, where clifftop scrubland meets the surf breaks that made Ericeira famous, Luís Pedra Silva of Pedra Silva Arquitectos took a former farmhouse and rehabilitation centre and transformed it into Aethos Ericeira, completed in 2022. The project's central move is a productive conversation between what was kept and what was added: restored traditional masonry in pale render and terracotta tile sits alongside contemporary extensions clad in vertical timber slats, with protruding metallic window boxes giving the facade a rhythm that feels neither nostalgic nor incongruous. Landscape design by Topiaris ties the 3,745 m² site to the coastal terrain, the pool terrace stepping down in limestone toward views that frame nothing but ocean and sky. Barcelona-based Astet Studio handled the interiors across 50 rooms and suites, and the approach is warm without straining for effect. Bedrooms are finished in wide-plank pale oak, the slatted timber headboards echoing the exterior cladding, boucle armchairs and low-slung platform beds keeping the mood close to domestic ease. The double-height lobby is the project's most architecturally ambitious interior: three arched openings frame a long boardwalk dissolving into the clifftop horizon, the plaster walls washed in a tone that shifts between sand and rose depending on the hour. In the restaurant, a textured dark tile wall provides counterpoint to the whitewashed coffered ceiling and warm oak joinery, pendant lights in blackened steel and brass holding the space at an intimate pitch.

About

Perched on a clifftop within a protected nature reserve, Aethos Ericeira offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic and the world-famous surf beaches of Ericeira. The hotel’s sleek design - crafted by Spanish studio Astet and Portuguese architect Luís Pedra Silva, feels both modern and deeply connected to its surroundings. With 50 rooms and suites, the hotel strikes a balance between intimate and substantial. Many rooms and all suites feature private gardens or terraces, with spacious living areas and well-appointed bathrooms designed for comfort. Wellness is front and center here, with a heated pool, gym, a surf concierge ready to guide you, and a spa centered around a traditional hammam experience. The on-site restaurant, ONDA, elevates Silver Coast seafood, paying tribute to the region’s fishing village roots with fresh, creative dishes.

"A fantastic escape from Lisbon and great for couples. The outdoor pool is great and the peace you get by listening to the Atlantic ocean is priceless."

"My husband and I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary and any concerns we had about October weather on the Atlantic coast were melted away by the stunning Portuguese sun. We also lucked out by avoiding what I understand can be some major hold-onto-your-surfboard winds; it was a calm dream our whole weekend. That allowed us to enjoy the beautifully designed pool area and the terrace overlooking the ocean. I’d highly recommend getting adventurous while there; take the surf lessons offered by the hotel! We had so much fun (it didn’t hurt that the instructors are easy on the eyes! ;-)). Go for a hike along the cliff ridges for stunning sunset views! The staff at the hotel were friendly but didn’t acknowledge our multiple previous stays with the brand which was a little disappointing but not a huge deal. Just something we always take note of at top hotels. The food at the restaurant was fine but not exceptional; I’d recommend checking out the local restaurants in town instead. Lots of great options. But all in all this was a delightful stay in a romantic little surf haven."

"I honestly don’t even know where to begin because this hotel is truly one of the best I’ve ever stayed at! From the very first moment, the service was absolutely outstanding – every single staff member was incredibly attentive, warm, and welcoming. The design of the hotel is simply stunning – so chic, tasteful, and aesthetic. Even though it’s small and intimate, it feels luxurious and perfectly curated. The atmosphere is pure relaxation and serenity, exactly what you need for a dreamy getaway. Our room was bright, cozy, and opened right onto the pool. The bed and pillows were unbelievably comfortable, with crisp linens and the softest towels – every little detail felt thoughtful. I also loved the high-quality bath products (shower gel, shampoo, conditioner) – such a nice touch! The facilities are top-notch: a heated pool, a well-equipped gym, a steam sauna, a regular sauna, and even a cold plunge – we used them all and absolutely loved it. Breakfast was another highlight: delicious, fresh, and made with quality ingredients. You can choose from the buffet or the à la carte menu – and it’s all included. On top of that, the hotel offers electric bike rentals and even some complimentary activities, which made the whole experience even more fun. I truly can’t recommend this place enough – everything was beyond perfect, and I’d go back in a heartbeat! 🌟"
