PB hotel design editorial

Facing Praça Luís de Camões, where the Chiado dissolves into the Bairro Alto and Lisbon's literary ghosts feel closest to the surface, a mustard-yellow Pombaline palace anchors one of the city's most charged urban corners. The Bairro Alto Hotel was established within an eighteenth-century building whose steeply pitched mansard roof and iron-railed balconies have defined this square's silhouette for generations — a setting that Portuguese studio Aires Mateus helped reconfigure for its 2005 opening, with subsequent renovation by Lisbon-based designer Vasco Mourão deepening the interior's character considerably. Across 87 rooms and suites spread over six floors, the approach resists any single period allegiance. The interiors draw instead on a layered mid-century Portuguese sensibility — dark mahogany panelling lines the bar, furnished with Finn Juhl-style teak armchairs and herringbone-carpeted floors that carry the atmosphere of a Lisbon intellectual's sitting room circa 1965. Guest rooms shift register between suites: one arrives in terracotta and dusty rose, grasscloth walls hung with abstract art in gilded frames and patterned drapes in an earthy persimmon; another settles into warm taupe with fluted upholstered headboards, geometric curtain fabric, and rust velvet armchairs alongside Marshall speakers on the bedside table — a knowing wink at cultural currency. On the rooftop terrace, rust-framed outdoor chairs face a panorama across the city's terracotta rooflines toward the Tagus and the Ponte 25 de Abril suspended beyond.

"The team here is the best at any hotel I’ve ever stayed. Doormen, housekeeping, front desk, restaurant, coffee bar. All perfect"

"A truly special property! Location is perfect. Staff are so accommodating and helpful, rooms are well appointed and spacious, amenities are top notch. We especially appreciated the charging ports in the rooms. Highlight of our stay was the daily breakfast in the restaurant which overlooked the river, city and bridge. Definitely not your run of the mill breakfast buffet! Everything is à la carte and delightful. The rooftop lounge is a perfect ending to a Lisbon evening."

"Room and bathroom, very spacious and nice. Miguel at the front desk was exceptionally helpful with recommendations. The breakfast items were delicious. It was the only hotel we stayed that did not have a buffet. We were anxious to see how that would work. We were not disappointed. There is a beautiful outside roof top area to eat with fabulous views. It was too chilly for us but they did have overhead heaters and lap blankets. Location was good. We were able to walk to many sites but be prepared to walk the hills! We loved Lisbon and wouldn’t hesitate to stay at this hotel again."

"recently had the pleasure of staying at one of the finest hotels in Lisbon, and it truly exceeded every expectation. The location is unbeatable — right in the city center and within walking distance to everything you could possibly need. Whether you’re exploring historic streets, shopping, or dining, everything is just steps away. From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed by the hotel’s warm and elegant décor. The ambiance feels luxurious yet inviting, making it easy to relax immediately. The rooms are impressively spacious, beautifully designed, and extremely comfortable. They even have post stamps in the room for you to send a postcard to your friends/family. What truly sets this hotel apart is the exceptional service. Every single staff member — from the doorman to the reception team to the restaurant staff — delivers outstanding hospitality. They go above and beyond, even remembering your name and addressing you by your last name, which adds such a personal and thoughtful touch. If you stay here, booking the spa is an absolute must. The facial treatments using Susanne Kaufmann products are incredible. I strongly recommend therapists Sarah and Jessica — both are highly skilled and provide a truly rejuvenating experience. Don’t miss the rooftop bar for stunning views and a fantastic atmosphere. Also, make sure to dine at BAHR restaurant — the food is absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. With its top-notch service, prime location, and overall excellence, this is hands down the best hotel in Lisbon. Don’t bother looking at any other hotels — this is the one."
