PB hotel design editorial

Perched above the Parque Eduardo VII on the edge of Lisbon's Marquês de Pombal quarter, the building that became the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon was conceived in the 1950s as a statement of national ambition — commissioned by António de Oliveira Salazar and completed in 1959 to a design by architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, with interiors directed by the painter and designer José Espinho. The brief demanded a grand hotel worthy of a European capital, and the result, across 282 rooms and suites spread across ten floors, still carries that foundational seriousness: a colonnaded lobby of polished limestone and marble, coffered ceilings hung with ornate chandeliers, walls lined with panels of handwoven wool tapestry depicting Portuguese historical scenes — one of the great collections of mid-century decorative arts in any hotel anywhere. The room categories span two distinct registers, visible in the images: original floors retain lacquered furniture in deep crimson and ebony with gold detailing, patterned carpets, and a formal restraint that honours Espinho's original hand; newer configurations lean into warmer mid-century modernism, with teal velvet armchairs, walnut headboards, and geometric flatweave rugs more attentive to contemporary comfort. The roof terrace restaurant, draped in scalloped awnings and planted with clipped standard trees above borders of scarlet geraniums, surveys a canopy of Lisbon pines with the composure of a property that has never needed to announce itself.

"The hotel is doing major construction without notifying the guests. The noise is unbearable and management does not care about the guests. Stay away. Lots of better choices in Lisbon."

"The quiet refinement of the decor and the warmth and efficiency of the staff makes this Lisbons #1 hotel. Rooms are large, the aircon good ( a must in Lisbon ), the beds supremely comfortable and the showers powerful. For jet lagged travellers the central location ( 20 mins from the airport ) on Parco Eduardo VII gives the hotel a sense of welcome inner-city calm. The downstairs bar with its 1950 era tapestries and walls of yellow marble is a quite remarkable work of architectural good taste. The hotel restaurant next to it surprised us. The chef should have a Michelin star in his own right. The bar staff and the ladies at the concierge desk are efficient and knowledgeable. We have returned from Portugal with the view that this hotel ranks alongside the Palace in Tokyo for superior guest comfort. The place is clearly superbly managed and the staff seem to enjoy working there. This is reflected in the outstanding service. We shall go again."

"Four Seasons is a wonderful brand and one tends to go from one Four Seasons to another. Unfortunately it is a franchise and some are great eg Four Seasons in Koh Samui is beyond amazing . The Four Seasons that is NOT good is the one in Lisbon. After many years of being their client each visit is as if they have never seen you before. They NEVER offer faciliated room checkin. They take your credit card at the reception and again upon checkout but they send the bill the next day via email . They have NO profile on the client preferences. This is probably due to turnover of staff and training. We made restaurant reservations with them at recommended restaurants and had the worst seating possible. If the Four Seasons cannot obtain proper seating they should not make the reservation. After a terrible experience seated next to the exit of the kitchen, next to the bathroom and near where dirty dishes were placed at the end of the bar I never again used concierge services. The hair dressers has closed but they tell you it is being renovated. After a delivery charge of one yogurt I think the time has come to look for another hotel. I will miss the pool and the decor but one needs to move on."

"We really enjoyed our stay at this Four Seasons property. The staff is delightful, helpful, always greeting us with a smile. The rooms were spacious, and ours had a nice balcony overlooking the park. The bed and pillows were comfortable. Great location. Highly recommended"

"Avoid, at least until the end of the construction. We came for four nights and since we arrived on Saturday, everything was perfect at the beginning. But early Monday morning, we were woken up by hammers and drills. It seems that the hotel is remodelling without telling the guests. Noise is really annoying. Good thing that Lisbon has so much to offer. But at least until the end of the construction I would recommend other hotel."
