PB hotel design editorial

Two converted Pombaline townhouses on Praça das Amoreiras — one rendered plain white, the other clad in deep forest-green azulejos — give Hotel das Amoreiras its quietly arresting street presence, the pairing a reminder that Lisbon's architectural identity has always been assembled rather than designed. Opened in 2022, the property brings together 17 rooms and two mansard-roofed attic suites across three floors, arranged around an interior courtyard where a gnarled olive tree planted in a corten steel planter serves as the hotel's most eloquent decorative gesture. The limestone-framed doorways and shuttered sash windows of the façade carry through inside, where Portuguese marble bathrooms anchor rooms furnished with rattan-headed beds, woven cane desk chairs, sisal rugs, and paired black-shaded sconces on turned timber brackets — a palette warm enough to feel residential without tipping into pastiche. The attic suites tell a different story entirely: sloped ceilings carved into angular light-wells draw the treetops of the square directly into the room, the geometry almost Scandinavian in its severity against the creamy plaster walls and brass-trimmed skirting. Downstairs, the bar swings in the opposite direction — deep green suede walls, ikat-upholstered bar stools in rattan, red leather club chairs, and a James Bond film poster pinned behind the backlit shelves. It is a room with a sense of humour, and the hotel is better for it.

Hotel das Amoreiras Reviews

"We were extremely disappointed by our room which was described as deluxe courtyard view. It was neither deluxe or with a view. It was tiny with no place to hang clothes apart from a few inches above the tea/coffee making shelf and no chest of drawers. After remonstrating we were moved to a slightly larger room with a bit more hanging space but it was still very small and our suitcases necessarily remained largely unpacked for the four days we were there. The small bathroom was just about adequate but no bathrobes were supplied. We did not sleep well. The bed was not king size because of the size of the room and the duvet and mattress cover were made of synthetic fibre. The cotton covers did not prevent these from being very hot. No alternative down duvets or even blankets were available. All this for €400 a night. After a couple of days the manager sought to discuss our concerns but this was entirely superficial. We weren’t even offered a complimentary drink. The front desk are knowledgeable and helpful regarding the area and attractions of Lisbon. Housekeeping is excellent and the breakfast is good and served by efficient and pleasant staff. Limited bar staff ie one person can lead to delays Needless to say we do not recommend this hotel despite its very nice and convenient location outside the busy centre. Thank goodness we are now at The Artsy in Cascais - also a small boutique hotel but in a different league altogether. And in a similar price range but cheaper."

"We stayed four nights in mid April. It's truly a lovely property made even better by its location in a non-touristy neighborhood. It's on a tree-lined square that is blissfully quiet. The hotel is stylish and well cared for. Breakfast in the courtyard is a wonderul place to start the day, and the food is great. The staff is kind and helpful. While it's far from the sites of the city, you get a sense of real Lisbon life, and taxis and ubers are fast and surprisingly cheap!"

"I stayed at Hotel das Amoreiras with a friend and can’t recommend it highly enough. From the moment we arrived, the staff were warm, genuinely attentive, and incredibly thoughtful. Every interaction felt personal and gracious. Housekeeping was immaculate, breakfast service was seamless, and every detail was clearly considered. The food was outstanding: beautifully prepared, locally sourced, and truly memorable. The hotel itself is serene and tastefully designed, with a quiet and cozy atmosphere. The team’s recommendations were spot-on and made our time in Lisbon even more special. A truly exceptional stay."

"What a beautiful oasis in Lisbon. The hotel and staff were superb. The location is quiet but central. The park opposite is a real plus"
