PB hotel design editorial

Perched on one of Alfama's oldest streets, within a sixteenth-century palace that survived the catastrophic 1755 earthquake largely intact, Santiago de Alfama carries a weight of Lisbon history that few boutique hotels anywhere in Europe can match. The building's stone-flagged entrance hall, visible in the images with its broad limestone arches and original paving worn smooth over centuries, sets that tone immediately — cobalt velvet sofas and a large contemporary canvas adding deliberate friction against the ancient fabric rather than trying to smooth it away. The exterior facade, cream-rendered with terracotta tile copings and wrought-iron balconettes, follows the restrained palatial grammar of late Manueline and early Renaissance Lisbon. Inside, the eighteen rooms draw on a palette anchored by teal velvet and warm pine floorboards, with individual rooms distinguished by their decorative choices — hand-painted azulejo-style tilework climbing full walls in some, coffered whitewashed ceilings and steel-blue upholstered headboards with nailhead detailing in others that open directly onto Tagus views. The bar is fitted in blond timber with mirrored panels and deep teal damask wallcovering, nailhead bar stools completing a room that feels more private members' club than hotel amenity. Throughout, carved Moorish mirrors and ornate gilded console tables hold their ground alongside contemporary art, the whole interior navigating the line between palatial grandeur and the intimate scale that Alfama's narrow hillside streets quietly demand.

Santiago de Alfama - Boutique Hotel Reviews

"Wow. What a find. Roman ruins beneath a palazzo, all underneath a modern and stylish boutique hotel. Great food and drinks. Comfortable room --- I had a King with a huge bathroom. And the staff are fabulous. I was welcomed with, "This is your home for the next few days" and they were right. They went out of their way to make me feel like I belonged. I'd stay again in a heartbeat."

"As others have shared, the service at this hotel is beyond compare. Both before and during our stay, we were given useful guidance that helped to make our time in Lisbon a lot of fun. Every one of the concierges was kind and helpful, the staff at Audrey’s for breakfast and dinner were fun to talk to (and the food was great, btw), and the housekeeping staff always served with a smile. Our room was small but manageable, and my only gripe was with the sink’s modern faucet that was more fancy than practical. Add a great location to all of this and I’m not sure what more you could ask for. Well, ask the concierge for that unique lunch spot on Campo Santa Clara and your trip will be complete!"

"This place is incredible. We were made to feel at home immediately. The staff is a major part of the magic here in addition to comfy spacious rooms. The reception was anchored by a capable & relatable Lana & Guilherme. The wonderful meals were served by the most accommodating, sincere & fun staff comprised of Hendrik, Prakash, Lucas, Daniel, Lakshmi & chef Marc. The owners have a wonderful touch for assembling a harmonious staff & curating a 5 star experience. We hope to return one day soon. P.S. If you have time a massage by Thelma is well worth it."
