PB hotel design editorial

A former luxury warehouse and early radio broadcast house on the corner of Rua Ivens and Rua Capelo, the building that is now The Ivens, Autograph Collection carries one of Chiado's more layered histories within its Romantic-Gothic facade — those pointed arches and ornate iron balconies glowing amber against the Lisbon dusk like something between a Venetian palazzo and a Pombaline fever dream. Catalan architect-designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán, who transformed the public spaces and three dining venues when the hotel opened in 2021, leaned into that richness rather than softening it. The bar is pure theatre: a monumental central island ringed by floral-upholstered stools, a towering mirrored bottle display spiralling toward the ceiling, black-and-white marble flooring beneath, and hot-pink blooms cutting through the brass. The main restaurant doubles down with amber lacquered coffered ceilings, deep garnet banquettes piled with botanical-print cushions, and the warm glow of mushroom lamps down long white-clothed tables. Interior architect Cristina Matos took a deliberately contrasting approach across the hotel's 87 rooms and 10 suites — the Gothic arched windows remain as structural punctuation, framing views over terracotta rooftops, but the palette shifts to warm sand, ivory linen, and ochre-trimmed joinery. Faded tropical tapestries above the beds and muted landscape photography on the walls nod toward the Africa-and-exploration narrative threaded throughout the property, while herringbone oak floors and deep-toned marble side tables keep the rooms grounded. The tension between Rosa-Violán's exuberant public world and Matos's quieter private one is what gives The Ivens its particular character.

"Me, my husband and 12 year old daughter stayed at the Ivens. It was simply lovely! The space is lovely and the staff are so incredibly friendly. Upon check-in, they offered to upgrade our room. The extra space made everything so comfortable. The hotel is conveniently located in the Chiado neighborhood and a great location to walk to the city center. One note about Rocco: the hotel restaurant is Rocco. We had a lovely dinner there our first night. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were so personable; we had a great time talking to them and trying the food that they recommended. However, on our last night, we had arrived back to the hotel later than expected after a long day on a tour to Sintra. We thought it would be easiest to eat at Rocco again as we were very tired and leaving the next day. We arrived in "daytime clothes" and were not met with the normal friendliness. Rather, the host and a man (who might've been more security than a host) clearly did not want us to be there. Rocco is a place to be "seen" and we were not up to their standard. We tried to sit at the bar (we assumed that they it was "first come, first serve") and the man (rather aggressively) told us that we were not allowed to sit at the bar. We were so tired and hungry that we let it go and ordered room service instead. Everything up to that point had been amazing, so it is a shame that it had to end that way."

"This was a wonderful hotel in a wonderful location. Walkable to several neighborhoods, restaurants and the river. The bar was lively with good drinks and breakfast was made from scratch and delicious. Our room was a decent size for a European hotel. Nothing to complain about here, would definitely stay here again."

"We just got back from Lisbon and we stayed st The Ivens. This hotel came recommended to us and it did not disappoint. We had a suite and loved everything about the room. We usually find large city hotel rooms to be small but not here. We had service twice a day in the room. The service is top notch. The daily breakfast buffet has a good selection of items. I highly recommend staying at this hotel in the Chiada area. Great location."

"Excellent stay for 6 nights with our older kids. We were able to get an adjoining room and each had balconies that overlooked the street. The room had tall ceiling, and was large. We particularly enjoyed the amenities in the room, and the special something that housekeeping left at every turndown; something that represented the area from chocolate to candy, along with a note on what it meant! It was quiet and the bed was extremely comfortable. Extras such as a tote bag for daily trips were helpful, and we ate lunch and dinner on several occasions at the Rocco- a very popular bar and restaurant connected to the hotel. It’s situated right at the Baixa-Chiado corridor and several steps away from amazing shopping and gelato! I highly recommend this hotel and will be back!"
