PB hotel design editorial

Avenida da Liberdade has been Lisbon's most ceremonial boulevard since the 1880s, a tree-lined axis modelled loosely on the Champs-Élysées, and the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade has commanded a prime stretch of it since 1933. The original building, designed by architect Cassiano Branco in a restrained modernist register, established the hotel as the address of choice for heads of state and film stars passing through Salazar's Portugal — a social role the property has never entirely relinquished. The entrance canopy visible in the images, clad in polished brass and flanked by pale granite pilasters, signals the renovation carried out under Minor Hotels' stewardship, which brought the 306-room property into a more contemporary idiom without dismantling its period authority. The interiors navigate a deliberate tension between old-hotel gravitas and updated comfort. Rooms in the older wing retain dark lacquered slatted headboards and fur-throw dressing, while refurbished suites introduce walnut headboards trimmed with brass detailing, tufted grey ottomans on cross-gilt frames, and pendant cylinders in brushed brass — a palette of terracotta, stone, and warm metal that coheres across categories. The rooftop SEEN restaurant and bar, fitted with a retractable glass enclosure and a long brass counter lined with deep green velvet stools, frames the silhouette of São Jorge Castle and the Tagus beyond it. Below, a wisteria-draped iron pergola over a teak deck surrounds the garden pool, offering the rare sensation of genuine seclusion on one of Europe's busiest urban avenues.

"We absolutely enjoyed our stay at this hotel. We stay 3 nights in one of the Deluxe Avenue View rooms on the second floor. The hotel is centrally located on one of the most prestige avenues in Lisbon. Subtle elegance is how I would describe the vibe of the hotel and the room. The comfy beds, the giant stand-alone mirror, the fresh orchid plant, and the sound proofing windows are impressive. The shower has excellent water pressure. The only drawback is that it lacks a window or ventilation fan. Breakfast has good varieties. Don't miss the chance to grab a drink at their rooftop bar. The most outstanding part is their staff. They truly understand the art of hospitality. This is a place where everyone, the doorman, the reception, and the servers at breakfast would adress you by name the second day of your stay, While there were minor issues with my room, the way it was handled was world-class. Mr. Rafael Gomes, their Guest Relations Manager, addressed all the issues immediately as soon as I brought that their attention. He not only resolved all the issues via text while we were out sightseeing; he also pleasantly surprised us by visiting us at the our table the next morning during breakfast to ensure we were comfortable. That level of proactive care is rare, especially after covid. To top it off, I received a beautiful handwritten note upon departure thanking me for my stay. This is my 8th visit to Lisbon, so I have stayed at many different hotels, but I never felt the need to write a review, except for this one. Their sincere commitment to guest satisfaction and meticulous attention to details, and staff like Mr. Gomes, really set them apart, and deserve the recognition. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!"

"Absolutely horrible. We were completely exhausted staying one night before heading to London. Intensely, intensely loud spalling (jack hammering out tile) above us from moment one. Told there is nothing they can do, not even monetary recompense. Told there is no connect to premium channels rudely over the phone before they hung up. Told them I wanted a refund, though EXHAUSTED and I would find another hotel. Suddenly they could change rooms, and service could connect premium channels or cast from my phone. On my honeymoon and paying money I didn’t have. In years. DO NOT pay the exorbitant money to stay here. Massive disappoint to a tired traveler hoping for rest at a 5 star hotel. I kind of hate them right now."

"This hotel advertises a pool but it was closed in April. This should be made clear on the listing. If you expect a pool, check it will be opened by the time you arrive. Also, children of residents are not allowed in the hotel’s rooftop bar Wednesday to Sunday. Presumably so as to leave the photos of the insta crowd unsullied by anything as workaday as a family eating and drinking in their own hotel. I feel this should also be made clear. Most disappointingly, there apparently a “common error” which means that, even when booking two rooms for four people, they are charged as single occupancy. Resulting in a hefty additional charge on departure. This leaves a somewhat bitter taste in the mouth and a feeling of being scammed (although I am sure that is not their intention). An otherwise adequate stay for a five star property. The beds were very comfortable and the staff are welcoming, although unrenovated rooms we were given are a little tired with grubby carpets. We were on the first floor with an avenue view. Try for higher up to avoid the noise of the street and metro outside."

"Outstanding hotel. The location was perfect. The service was incredible. Pedro and Pedro from guest services went the extra mile to make our family feel welcome. They even set up an egg hunt for our daughter for Easter! The breakfast was also 5/5. I’d highly recommend anybody, especially if you’re traveling with family/kids, to stay at the Tivoli."
