PB hotel design editorial

Curving across a clifftop site above Funchal's waterfront like the hull of a ship caught mid-turn, the building that houses Savoy Palace gives Madeira's hotel landscape its most assertive contemporary gesture. Designed by the Portuguese architecture practice Bak Gordon Arquitectos and completed in 2018, the 352-room property replaced an earlier Savoy hotel on the same elevated plot, its sweeping facade of bronze-toned fins and curved glass terraces stepping down toward the Atlantic in a sequence that the aerial view makes legible as pure nautical form. The Savoy group, which has operated on this hillside site since 1904, commissioned an interior scheme that carries the same confidence — laser-cut brass botanical screens beside the headboards, cork-effect flooring that nods to Madeiran craft tradition, and custom low-profile furniture in olive velvet and warm gold finishes set against pale stone-effect carpets with an abstract wave motif. The rooftop deck is where the building's massing pays its greatest dividend: an infinity pool aligned directly with the open Atlantic horizon, flanked by tensile sail canopies and planted with dwarf palms that reinforce the subtropical register. The restaurant, its undulating backlit ceiling echoing the curve of the facade outside, frames the sea through floor-to-ceiling glass in a manner that treats the view as the primary decorative element. Across all spaces, the palette — cream, amber, warm brass, and the particular grey-blue of the ocean at dusk — holds the interior and exterior in a continuous conversation.

"My daughter and I had a great 4 night stay at the Savoy Palace. We liked everything about the hotel, including breakfast and the Pau de Lume. The staff was very friendly and the concierges provided great advice on hikes. No real areas for improvement, but I would suggest replacing the glass wall + transparent curtail between the bathroom and the bedroom. It would also be nice in the rooftop or indoor pool were heated and open slightly later."

"I watched the Savoy Palace hotel being built over numerous visits and several years of visiting Madeira so I have always been curious as to what it would be like to stay there, so when I found my normal hotel was closed for refurbishment I decided to go to the Savoy Palace and find out. I was quite apprehensive of going as it is a very large hotel and being on my own now I thought it might be a bit overwhelming, but I couldn't have been more wrong, it was wonderful, the staff from reception to housekeeping and doormen were all so friendly and very kind and helpful, 2 young girls from Nepal who did the evening turn down service were just lovely and gave me an extra chocolate as I didn't drink tea or coffee.. The hotel never once felt busy and it was so quiet I didn't hear any noise at night from in the hotel or from outside when I was in my room. I booked a superior ocean view room for sole use which was on the 11th floor, it was spacious and had a huge comfortable bed. there was a sofa in the room which I didn't find too comfortable to sit for very long, a comfortable chair would have been much nicer. I had a large balcony, with a gorgeous view out to sea with 2 chairs and a table to sit and watch the sun go down at night. The breakfasts were excellent, I was lucky and had beautiful weather the whole week I was there so I got to eat outside every morning by the swimming pool, it was such a lovely area to be. A couple of things that could be improved with the room was the clothes rail in the cupboard was far too high, I am 5'2" and was unable to reach it to hang up my clothes so I had to leave them just on the shelf below, I needed to be another 6 to 8 inches taller to reach it, also there was only 2 small draws to put things in and no drawer at the side of the bed to put small personal things in., I was really sad when it was time to leave to go home, and I now want to return to the hotel sometime in the not too distant future."

"Amazing beautiful resort!! Stayed there for our 15 year anniversary and it did not disappoint! The little touches they add to make your stay feel more special is bar none. From the moment we walked in the receptionist was super personable super nice and very helpful with any questions about restaurant recommendations and letting us know where everything was at the resort. Very highly recommend and will be coming back. Have stayed at other 5-star hotels that were just meh. This one is wow!"
