PB hotel design editorial

Along the Ribeira waterfront, where Porto's granite quays have faced the Douro for centuries, a run of eighteenth-century merchant townhouses — their ochre and cream facades articulated by wrought-iron balconies and granite window surrounds — was stitched together into the Pestana Vintage Porto. The conversion preserved the buildings' Pombaline bones while inserting an entirely contemporary interior logic: the ground-floor arches that once sheltered river trade now frame the hotel's threshold, their stone voussoirs left exposed against whitewashed walls. Upstairs, the lobby seating area arranges bronze leather armchairs and mid-century splayed-leg occasional chairs around a staircase wall hung salon-style with black-and-white travel photography, a device that gives the double-height space the atmosphere of a well-traveled collector's house rather than a hotel arrival sequence. The rooms carry a consistent narrative of Portuguese wandering — one category wraps a headboard wall in a dense collage of vintage picture postcards, while another deploys a graphic city-map mural above the bed with Rio lettered across the headboard wall, teal upholstered benches on tapered timber legs grounding the scheme. The restaurant presses harder into pattern and color: houndstooth dining chairs pulled to lacquered dark tables, columns sheathed in malachite-effect wallcovering, navy diamond-quilted bar fronts, and a shredded-raffia pendant overhead that reads somewhere between a Tropicália installation and a Portuguese colonial memory. It is a lot, and it works precisely because the granite shell outside holds everything in check.

"Great location on the river, very unique decor and configuration, super cute reception and common areas. The breakfast in the morning is a delight, such variety and a great setting. Everyone working at the hotel was incredibly helpful, friendly and proud of the hotel. River view rooms provided large windows that opened to a great view and fresh air. You can hear some music and noise but it didn’t bother us and was fun to be in an area where there was a buzz and lively at night. The room decor is charming with some wear (hallways) & we found beds to be a bit too firm. But, other than that, we really enjoyed our stay. They’re located on the waterfront at the bottom of a fairly steep hill. Only taxis are given permission to drive to the bottom to pick up and drop off, so if you uber or ride share, they will have to drop you at the top of the hill & you walk down the cobblestone a couple blocks to the bottom. If you have luggage, little kids, bad weather or mobility issues, getting to the bottom may be a challenge unless you taxi."

"The location of this hotel is fantastic, to the point where I don’t think there’s a single hotel in the whole of Porto in a better place - right in the heart of the Ribeira district overlooking the Douro and close walking to all the main areas. Really friendly staff, lovely room and very quiet/private setting despite the central location. Breakfast was great - plenty of choice and gluten free options well catered for. The only minor point was that it sometimes took quite a while for the GF bread to be brought out when asked for compared to the hot food orders. But staff were great. Would definitely stay here again if visiting again. Thanks!"

"We didn’t stay here, but we spent a lovely few hours in their wine bar. A rainy afternoon, sat drinking wine and eating cheese and charcuterie whilst watching the river activity. Bliss. Bit pricy, but it was my birthday, so what the heck."
