PB hotel design editorial

Avenida dos Aliados has long functioned as Porto's civic spine, its Beaux-Arts facades arranged in ceremonial procession toward the Câmara Municipal, and the building that houses Le Monumental Palace was purpose-built in 1923 as part of that grand urban statement. The conversion to a 62-room hotel, completed in 2019, preserved the limestone facade's arched entrance portal, ornamental pilasters, and wrought-iron canopy almost exactly as found — the exterior image confirms how precisely the street presence was maintained. Inside, the lobby delivers the full Art Deco promise of the building's era: grey and white marble floors laid in geometric grids, mirrored brass columns multiplying the space outward, deep violet velvet sofas trimmed in white piping, and carved plaster capitals that suggest the 1920s never quite loosened their grip. The interiors were designed by Porto-based studio Belarte, whose approach to the rooms threads a confident Art Deco vocabulary through every surface — fan-motif carpets drawn from the period's graphic language, chevron-patterned mirror panels flanking the suite beds, navy leather headboards framed in brass, and amber velvet armchairs that hold the warmth the cream panelled walls would otherwise surrender. The restaurant carries the same sensibility into a lighter register, its tall windows flooding brass-edged marble bistro tables and tan leather dining chairs with northern Portuguese daylight, pendant drops in amber glass reinforcing a palette that runs consistently from the street entrance to the uppermost floor.

"We had a wonderful experience at this well appointed luxurious hotel. The included breakfast had a wide variety of delicious hot options as well as a plentiful buffet. Nothing could top our friendly bar tender, Francisco, and the delicious bar food created by the chef at the Bar American, Louis, who clearly has a passion for the culinary arts. Spectacular stay"

"We celebrated our mother-in-law's 77th birthday. What a beautiful hotel and wonderful service. Highly recommended! There was also a nice surprise in her room because it was her birthday. The breakfast is fantastic, by the way!"

"I wish I could stay at this hotel whenever I travel! 5 stars all the way! Gorgeous, clean and modern. 10/10 for service, amenities and atmosphere. I stayed 3 nights with my mom. Bathroom was large with plenty of room to neatly store all our makeup and toiletries. An actual shower DOOR and not those half glass half open situations that gets the floor all wet. Lots of closet and drawer space. The TV was in a giant mirror on the wall. Breakfast was OUTSTANDING. The food and service 100/10. I'm still thinking about it. Champagne, fresh pressed juices, komboucha, lots of fresh fruit, pastries, basically anything you could want. PLUS a menu for eggs, french toast, etc. The wine tasting experience in the bar was excellent. B. Zein was amazing at explaining each wine and the charcuterie board was beyond delicious. The spa was such a treat at the end of the day for a soak or steam. I miss this place so much. Ricardo at the front desk was lovely as well as the doorman (tall with glasses). I would live in this hotel if i could. We had lunch at the Japanese restaurant, it was lovely. If you are visiting Porto, please stay here, you will not regret it. It is also in a great location, walkable to everything."

"Oh my do I love this hotel! Just wanted to dash off a quick note to share our feelings. It was one of those times when the hotel and the city blend into an unforgettable experience. Can't wait to return to Porto and The Monumental Palace. Loved the service level and the special and unique architecture and design. I was a bit worried about the rooms as we like and usually pay for a larger room or suite. The room size with the high ceilings and copious storage was very good. The plaza/boulevard view was very nice. The windows opened for fresh air also. (FYI, with the double windows closed there was not any street noise.) Summary: Front desk: excellent Bell staff and housekeeping: excellent Rooms: Delightful Design and architecture: One of kind Breakfast: Very good. Restaurant: Very elegant as much of Porto is. Michelin starred. Sorry for the quick summary. Note: As part of stay it included a wine tasting. We weren't expecting much and were half tempted to not do it since we have been to hundreds of wine tastings since it's our hobby. However, it was wonderful. The lounge is not to be missed. It's not huge but every inch of it is done in early 1900s modern and you will not be able to resist taking photos of all the special design details. The wine bartender was outstanding and made the evening."
