PB hotel design editorial

The granite warehouses lining the southern bank of the Douro at Vila Nova de Gaia have stored port wine for centuries, their thick stone walls and terracotta rooflines forming one of Porto's most recognisable riverscapes. The Rebello was carved from one such lodge — an eighteenth-century structure whose rough-hewn granite facade and arched fenestration were preserved wholesale during conversion, with a contemporary infill block inserted between the original wings to accommodate the hotel's 162 rooms across five floors. The architectural intervention, handled with restraint, keeps the industrial bones legible from the water while introducing a clean-lined modern volume that never competes with the historic masonry. Inside, the interiors adopt a palette drawn directly from the Douro itself — warm sand plasters, tawny terracotta tile, polished concrete floors, and upholstered headboards in figured walnut veneer shaped into low arched forms that echo the warehouse openings outside. Rooms are furnished with sage velvet lounge chairs, marble-topped side tables, and teal geometric tile runners underfoot, the effect closer to a considered Portuguese apartment than a conventional hotel room. The spa extends the sensibility underground, its thermal pool room finished in blush terracotta brick and limewashed stucco, oversized opaline globe pendants suspended at varying heights above the water. On the rooftop terrace, blackened steel pergolas frame the full sweep of Porto's hillside across the river — a view of tiled rooftops and baroque towers that no renovation brief could have designed.

About

Located on Gaia’s waterfront, with a panoramic view across the Douro river, The Rebello is the perfect place to explore Porto’s historic centre and the grand port lodges. Inspired by an industrial chic feel, it is designed for friends and families with furry friends included and a kid’s club, The Rebello has 103 artfully decorated suites that range from studios to three-bedroom penthouses, with fully fitted kitchens and ample space to live. In addition to Bello Rooftop, where guests can enjoy artisanal pizza or petiscos while taking in a spectacular view of the Douro River and Dom Luís I Bridge, there is also Pot&Pan, which offers tapas-style dishes to share with a twist on traditional Portuguese cuisine. In charge of both restaurants is Chef André Coutinho. The hotel also features a spa and wellness area inspired by Ancient Roman baths, with an indoor pool, a sauna and a gym.

"We travelled from the US to Lisbon with friends who are from Portugal .. visited Chamadourozz their town.. then took the train into Porto. We were happy to find the Rebello listed on Booking.com and decided to try a stay. After two days we booked a 3rd night. The spa massages were terrific and the pool spa/jacuzzi was awesome as well. Everyone was very helpful and kind. Loved that the first round of beer, wine and sodas were included and fresh water bottles each day. Cozy clean robes were available each day for our use at the spa. The beds and linens including pillows were comfy and luxurious! All around excellent hotel! Thanks you again for making our first trip to Porto so amazing."

"There were so many great options but I’m happy I decided to stay at the Rebello as it was all that I wanted and more! The staff were super helpful and attentive even before I arrived. I get the “ick” at hotels easily and they instantly won me over with the small touches - like double pillow cases on the pillows. The hotel was super clean - not a strand of hair or random spot anywhere. The breakfast buffet was great too. This review is getting too long and I’ve not even gotten to the view yet. The hotel is on the Gaia side so not in the middle of the busy area but it’s so picturesque and very easy to get around. Many times I didn’t really want to leave the room! There are a ton of options in the area but include this on your list."

"If I could move into The Rebello for a month, I would do it in a heartbeat. Our recent stay in Porto was easily the best hotel experience I have ever had. From the moment we arrived, the level of service and attention to detail was unmatched. The Suite & Amenities The rooms are, hands down, the nicest I have ever stayed in. The layout of our suite was incredible, spacious, thoughtfully designed, and felt like a high-end home rather than a hotel room. We loved the thoughtful touches, like the well-stocked coffee and drinks supplied right in our room. World-Class Service The customer service team is world-class. My daughter turned 12 during our stay, and they made her feel so special. They left a lovely surprise for her arrival, and on her actual birthday, she returned to our room to find a piece of cake with a candle. Even on a rainy day, they were right there to supply us with umbrellas so we could keep exploring. Facilities & Location For Families: The pool and spa were a total hit with the kids, the perfect place to unwind after walking the hills of Porto. Rooftop Bar: The views and atmosphere at the rooftop bar are spectacular. Breakfast: Simply amazing. A huge variety and everything was delicious. Location: Perfectly situated to enjoy the best of the city while feeling like a private retreat. This hotel doesn’t just offer a room; they offer an experience. We cannot wait to come back!"
