PB hotel design editorial

A nineteenth-century neoclassical palace on Porto's Ribeira waterfront, its limestone facade articulated with pilastered bays, arched windows, and a rusticated ground floor that has faced the Douro's light for well over a century, became Torel 1884 after a conversion that treated the building's formal bones as the starting point rather than an obstacle. The year in the name tells you something important: this is a property that wears its heritage candidly, the original Fernandine architecture preserved in the tall arched openings, the double-height ceilings, and the deeply carved cornice lines visible from the street. Inside, the interiors are calibrated to a colonial-inflected warmth — olive and tobacco walls, rattan-panelled headboards in dark timber frames, leather campaign stools at the foot of beds laid with quilted coverlets, and botanical triptychs in monochrome hung above a verde marble bar counter edged in cane-wrapped steel. The library draws the two sensibilities together most clearly: a marble fireplace flanked by floor-to-ceiling shelving stacked with books and blue-and-white ceramics, a cobalt velvet sofa pulled close to a brass-framed coffee table inlaid with what appears to be antiqued mirror glass. The restaurant deploys oversized tropical foliage against dark panelled walls and suspended glassware above the bar, the overall atmosphere belonging more to a well-travelled private house than to a hotel of conventional ambitions.

"Really nice hotel the room was very nice, and the staff were excellent and friendly. Not to mention the breakfast in the mornings. The only thing that I would suggest they improve is the TV’s in the room not having smart TV’s in 2026 is a major drawback that can easily be fixed."

"The hotel was absolutely fantastic! Beautiful decor, super comfortable room, that feels like a home. A great location; walk to the Quay, pedestrian streets, historic landmarks, tons of boutiques, cafés and restaurants. Breakfast selection is amazing. And service is outstanding, from check-in to restaurant! Efficient, courteous and helpful. We loved everything!"

"What an amazing place! Perfect top level service from the very first step. True feeling of being at home far from home. Every single person from the reception to Daniel (who kindly assisted us with luggage and eplxained everything on our way to apartment) is truly super helpful and kind. We have been to many top luxurious hotels but this experience was so warm and lovely! The apartment was comfortably located, clean, fresh, with all the necessary new staff. The secured public parking is also located in 5 minutes walk. What is also nice that being located straight on a very touristic street, you are not irritated with noise. It even gives you a little fun of city life, guitar music and this morning mood of the city waking up) Great value for a perfect quality. The breakfast was nice, a la carte but nothing special. Anyway we enjoyed it and find it tasty. People and service here are the most amazing here so we for sure will come back! Thank you for having us, that was a pure pleasure."

"Just wow! I came across Torel 1884 via Tik Tok and immediately booked for my mam’s 60th birthday. As there we were 3 of us, we were housed in the apartment block just a short walk from the main hotel. Iris helped us to check in and was so friendly and professional. We were given a choice of any welcome drink upon arrival (a dream after travelling) and were able to enjoy the impressive hotel library before being escorted over to our apartment on the next street (luggage was taken care of by a lovely gentlemen who worked at the hotel- thank you). The apartment itself was spacious, spotless and stylish. It was perfect. We didn’t think things could get any better until we attended our first breakfast at the hotel the following morning. George, our server, had such charm and was very attentive. A 3 tiered breakfast platter is served first, made up of any array of fruits, meat, cheese, croissants and toast with condiments. This was such a pleasant surprise and was very much enjoyed. You are then able to order your own choice of breakfast from the given menu - eggs benedict’s, pancakes, english breakfast etc. It truly is fantastic and if you are staying at this hotel you most certainly should include breakfast! The location of the hotel is perfect. Short walk from the river front and a short walk from restaurants/bars etc. The perfect trip to porto! Thank you!"
