PB hotel design editorial

A nineteenth-century neoclassical palace on Porto's Ribeira waterfront, its limestone facade articulated with pilastered bays, arched windows, and a rusticated ground floor that has faced the Douro's light for well over a century, became Torel 1884 after a conversion that treated the building's formal bones as the starting point rather than an obstacle. The year in the name tells you something important: this is a property that wears its heritage candidly, the original Fernandine architecture preserved in the tall arched openings, the double-height ceilings, and the deeply carved cornice lines visible from the street. Inside, the interiors are calibrated to a colonial-inflected warmth — olive and tobacco walls, rattan-panelled headboards in dark timber frames, leather campaign stools at the foot of beds laid with quilted coverlets, and botanical triptychs in monochrome hung above a verde marble bar counter edged in cane-wrapped steel. The library draws the two sensibilities together most clearly: a marble fireplace flanked by floor-to-ceiling shelving stacked with books and blue-and-white ceramics, a cobalt velvet sofa pulled close to a brass-framed coffee table inlaid with what appears to be antiqued mirror glass. The restaurant deploys oversized tropical foliage against dark panelled walls and suspended glassware above the bar, the overall atmosphere belonging more to a well-travelled private house than to a hotel of conventional ambitions.

"The hotel is ideally located a few minutes walk downhill to the waterfront. The atmosphere is fantastic, the reception, restaurant and main spaces are styled to an extremely high standard. Our room was on the 1st floor and was excellently designed, with high ceilings and a firm but extremely comfortable bed. The hotel and rooms were absolutely spotless and the housekeepers do a fantastic job of keeping the place looking great. The staff were very friendly and attentive, even keeping our bags when we arrived way before checkin - they also messaged to advise when the room was ready so that we were able to go enjoy our time in Porto. The hotel is not the cheapest, but it is definitely worth it given the fantastic surroundings, great food and friendly staff Should we visit Porto again, we would definitely stay here"

"This hotel exceeded my expectations in almost every way. The location is simply unbeatable, right in the centre of Porto, within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and all the major sightseeing spots. I couldn't have asked for a more convenient base to explore the city. What really set this place apart was its character. From the moment I checked in and received an old-style room key, I could feel the history and adventure woven into the building. It gave the whole stay a wonderful sense of authenticity that you don't often find in modern hotels. The room itself was immaculately clean and thoughtfully equipped. I loved having coffee, tea, and bottled water on hand, and the mini fridge was a great bonus. I used it to keep my water cool and store some fruit and cheese for snacks between sightseeing. The shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel provided were a lovely touch too, with beautiful scents that made getting ready each day a small pleasure. The bed was extremely comfortable, and finding a chocolate on my pillow each evening after a long day of walking was such a nice, welcoming touch. I also have to mention the hotel's restaurant, Bartolomew — the staff were so pleasant, and the food there was absolutely delicious and a real highlight of the trip. My only criticism relates to the curtains, which were difficult to close fully, letting light into the room at night. This became more of an issue combined with the air conditioning, which struggled to cool the room properly once the curtains were closed...a real problem given it was 38°C during my visit! A small fix here would make the experience close to perfect. Overall, a beautiful, character hotel in a fantastic location. I'd happily stay again, ideally in a room with better curtains and stronger air conditioning!"
