PB hotel design editorial

Two nineteenth-century bourgeois mansions on the Rua da Boa Nova, their granite façades dressed with elaborate wrought-iron balconies and Portuguese cobblestone forecourts patterned in sweeping calçada motifs, provided the bones for Torel Palace Porto when the property opened in 2017. The conversion preserved the neoclassical shell almost intact — arched stone doorways flanked by bronze statues, salmon-pink render on the garden wing, and interior plasterwork ceilings of extraordinary density, their acanthus scrolls and foliate medallions rising four metres above dark-stained hardwood floors. Against these inherited surfaces, the interiors layer a confident contemporary sensibility: Eames lounge chairs in black leather positioned beneath ornate cornices, glass-partitioned marble bathrooms carved from rooms that once belonged to Porto's industrial aristocracy, and bedside tables in geometric brass supporting blue-and-white Chinese porcelain lamps. The bar draws from a different register entirely — a black-on-black Art Deco mood, with a curved fluted counter in dark lacquer, globe pendants on polished steel stems, and a black-and-white marble chequerboard floor that shifts the atmosphere toward a 1930s Parisian brasserie, a Bonjour Paris bicycle planted deliberately in the sightline. Outside, a narrow lap pool set in dark mosaic tile runs along a wall of clipped cypress, crystal chandeliers suspended from a vine-draped pergola above the timber deck. The hotel's twenty rooms are spread across the two villas, each configured around its original room proportions rather than standardised against a contemporary floor plate.

"We had a wonderful experience at this hotel. The location is within walking distance (15-20 minutes) to most of the major attractions in Porto. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful. The rooms are big with an unusual setup of the bathroom sitting in the middle of the rooms (which makes for a sometimes awkward sharing of the facilities). There are a number of light switches in the rooms that were a bit confusing to operate but not a big deal for us. We had two rooms (one for us and one for our college age kids). The kids’ room was cooler than our’s and we could never figure out how to make our room really cool (but, again, it was manageable). They give you a bottle of tawny port to enjoy (which we did) in the room. Finally, if you can, do yourself a favor and book a dinner at Blind one night. It was so much fun! Great food and service, unusual experience. We highly recommend it. The water pairing may sound a little odd at first, but was actually very cool and informative. Enjoy your stay at this hotel!"

"Very well appointed hotel with a literary theme carried out throughout the entire property. The staff was top-notch, super attentive, supremely, helpful and friendly. Florbela, the small café, served excellent food in a cozy atmosphere. The room was very comfortable and uniquely designed with plenty of pillows and amenities. Breakfast was superb. The location within Porto can’t be beat. We can’t wait to stay here again!"

It’s a castle hotel in a charming city associated with Harry Potter and port wine. We were welcomed with a glass of port wine, and learned that it is a dessert wine reserved for special occasions. The staff kindly made last-minute reservations for a winery, Livraria Lello, and the Alfa Pendular to Lisbon, which allowed us to relax and enjoy our stay with peace of mind. A wonderful breakfast was included. Every morning there was a fresh buffet along with warm dishes. The Eggs Benedict was especially delicious. The staff were cheerful and welcoming, making our stay very pleasant. There is also a lovely café on site, perfect for a short break. The bacalhau (salted cod) specialty restaurant recommended by the barista was excellent. We were able to spend a truly relaxing and enriching time. Thank you very much, Joanna, Roana from the restaurant, and all the other staff!"
