PB hotel design editorial

Floating roughly four kilometres off the coast of Doha on a crescent-shaped private island in the Persian Gulf, the overwater villa concept — long the preserve of the Maldives and Bora Bora — found an unlikely new address when Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara opened in 2015. The property transplants the Polynesian-inflected vocabulary of thatched-roof water bungalows into the Gulf, stringing teak-clad pavilions along timber boardwalks above shallow turquoise water, their steeply pitched thatch roofs visible against Doha's skyline at dusk. The 141 rooms and villas divide between beachfront and overwater accommodation, the latter distinguished by fold-back glass walls that dissolve the boundary between cedar-lined interiors and private sun decks furnished with rattan daybeds and glass-floored panels revealing the sea below. Inside the villas, horizontal timber cladding wraps every wall surface, warm against white linen and upholstered rattan seating in sand and grey tones, with arabesque-fretwork bed frames introducing a quiet regional register. The resort's main restaurant takes a more theatrical approach — dark stained timber columns carry an exposed chevron-beam ceiling above herringbone parquet floors, with cylindrical aquarium columns flanking a gilded sunburst wall installation that pushes the space toward a kind of tropical Arabesque fusion. The lagoon pool, its shoreline edge formed from pale rendered masonry and scattered boulders, blends seamlessly into the natural beach beyond, palm trees and thatched parasols extending toward the overwater villas in the middle distance.

"That’s indeed, one of the most memorable experiences that we’ve ever had and this was our second time on banana Island. Very cozy and comforting and hospitable people, we can’t forget the initial greeting by Mr. Luqman, or the fun aura and magic tricks of Mr.Ishaque at Ted’s diner. We can’t wait to come back again with more activities and nightlife leisure on board. thank you for having us!"

"My family and I recently enjoyed a day trip to Banana Island Resort Doha By Anantara, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Getting there was a breeze. We found all the information we needed online and over the phone, and a quick Uber took us straight to the port. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was top-notch. We paid QAR365 on the day, and to our pleasant surprise, that covered far more than we expected – including the lovely boat cruise to and from the island. Here’s what the QAR365 included: QAR70 activity voucher – which, thanks to a special on the day, let us do any and all of the 9 Adventure Park activities for the price of QAR70, no extra cost. Incredible value! QAR200 food voucher – redeemable at any restaurant on the island. Once we arrived, the friendly hosts explained our options. A helpful tip for ladies: wear shorts or trousers for the adventure park, as they provide hard closed-toe shoes for safety. The guides were brilliant – when they heard we were from Zimbabwe, they lit up and spoke so highly of their manager, Mr. Brighton (also from Zimbabwe). Meeting him was a real treat. He was warm, informative, and gave us great insight into the resort. He also suggested we end our day with kayaking – a perfect recommendation. The adventure activities were exhilarating, a true adrenaline rush, and everything was equipped with excellent safety measures. After a few rounds, we had lunch at Q Lounge. The food was delicious, and the service was lovely and pleasant. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and thanks to the QAR200 food voucher, our entire lunch was covered – we didn't spend a single extra dirham at the restaurant. The same applied everywhere else; the vouchers covered all our costs. We then enjoyed some downtime swimming and relaxing on the beach. To close the day, we went kayaking. A big thank you to Mr. Ali for walking us through everything we needed to know. At 5 pm, we boarded the boat for a beautiful end-of-day cruise back to port. Overall: 10/10 – hospitality, value, connections (shoutout to Mr. Brighton for that Zimbabwe touch), and every single staff member who served us with warmth and a smile. Highly, highly recommend Banana Island to anyone on holiday in Qatar or looking for a perfect day trip or staycation. We'll be back!"
