PB hotel design editorial

Katara Towers rises from the waterfront of Lusail City in a crescent arc that references Qatar's national emblem of crossed scimitars — a piece of civic symbolism rendered at 36 storeys and reflected, with uncanny completeness, in the still water below. Fairmont Doha, which claimed one of the two towers when the complex opened in 2022, was designed by Dar Al Handasah with Kling Consult leading as the project's executive and interior design consultant. The building's curved curtain-wall facade wraps guest rooms around a generous arc of sky and Gulf, and the architects leaned into the nautical logic of that shape: Kling Consult's interiors draw explicitly from super-yacht design, a reference that gives every surface a sense of considered tautness. Inside, the palette shifts between extremes — guest rooms arrive in cream linen and duck-egg blue, with barrel-vaulted headboards upholstered in ribbed ivory fabric that feel like the interior of a beautifully appointed vessel's cabin. The restaurant spaces turn dramatically darker: amber resin Tulip-form chairs, mirrored ceilings that ripple like disturbed water, and floor-to-ceiling glass framing the city lights far below. Anchoring the atrium is what the hotel claims to be the world's tallest chandelier, a 56-metre cascade of light suspended through all 36 floors. With 362 rooms finished in dark wood, white leather, and 18-karat gold tile details, the property navigates the tension between restraint and spectacle — and mostly pulls it off.

"Nice hotel with nice view. The restaurant bar on top is very nice. But pricing is very expensive and portions are too small."

"Our recent stay at Fairmont Doha was unforgettable, and not only because the hotel itself is extraordinary. From the moment you arrive, you can feel that this is somewhere very special. The location is superb, sitting proudly at the pinnacle of Lusail, and the setting alone is breathtaking. The hotel is housed within the iconic Katara Towers, which are truly an architectural masterpiece. While it is a short taxi ride from most places, getting around is easy and affordable, with Ubers usually costing around 20 QAR, and even Place Vendôme Mall is only about a 30-minute walk away. The property is regal, elegant and undeniably luxurious, but what makes it so special is that beneath all the grandeur is a team of wonderfully down-to-earth people. There is a real abundance of staff, and every single person seems determined to help in any way they can. The hotel is generally very clean and well maintained, although some parts of the rooms are beginning to show a little age, and a few features such as charging facilities and showers did not always function perfectly. These were relatively minor issues in the grand scheme of our stay, but they are areas that could do with some attention. The amenities are excellent, the pools are great fun, and the gym is wonderful. The only small downside during our stay was that the outdoor pool heating was not turned on. That said, the rooms more than make up for it, they are simply stunning. Beautifully designed, incredibly comfortable, immaculately finished, with amazing views and thoughtful amenities throughout (including a full barista coffee machine), they are genuinely the best hotel rooms we have ever stayed in. The food also deserves enormous praise. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all prepared to an outstanding standard, whether in the restaurants or as part of the buffet. Every meal felt carefully made and full of quality. We miss the pastries everyday since coming home! What truly made this stay exceptional, however, was the way the hotel and its staff cared for guests during an incredibly distressing and extraordinarily challenging period. We stayed during a deeply frightening and unstable time in Doha, with airspace closures and government-mandated sheltering, and despite the deeply harrowing circumstances, the staff at every level came together in the most remarkable way to keep guests feeling safe, calm, comfortable and looked after. It is difficult to put into words how much that meant to us. Even while they were clearly living through something life-changing and deeply unsettling themselves, they continued to show grace, professionalism, kindness and compassion. That level of care will stay with us for a very long time. There are so many people who deserve recognition. Andrew Steele, the Managing Director, and Duncan Gray, the Hotel Manager, both gave regular updates and took the time to stop and speak with us whenever they could, which gave us enormous reassurance and confidence throughout. Kevin, the F&B Director, along with Dustin and Moussa from the kitchens, were so warm and friendly, kept us entertained with cooking classes, and made sure we were always looked after...especially at such times when we were not feeling well, when they went above and beyond to make sure we were fed and comfortable, sending food and hospitality to our room. At the front desk and back office, Iman, Jo, Hajar, Ivan and Syed were all incredibly helpful throughout and constantly kept us smiling. In the dining room, Jin, Lin and Alexandra welcomed us with warm smiles up to three times a day, which made such a difference. Mohammed, Jawad, Ilham, Hajar and Omit looked after us so kindly during service, and Fiona on desserts and coffee had one of the most comforting and warming smiles we encountered during our stay. Nasir, Asim and Archie also took the time to stop and talk to us, which meant more than they probably realized. We would also like to mention all of the cleaners, security staff, and every other member of the team who put aside their own worries and needs to provide such incredible service during such a difficult time. And a special thank you as well to Suleman from Raffles, who gave us our own personal photoshoot within the hotel. Fairmont Doha is a spectacular hotel in every sense: beautiful, luxurious, welcoming and full of heart. But for us, what defines this hotel is not only its stunning design, exceptional rooms or outstanding food, it is its people, from the leadership through to every level. We will never forget the kindness, courage and care shown to us during one of the most difficult and surreal moments we have ever experienced while travelling. Despite the current geographic situation, once the area is stable and it is okay to travel again, we would return in a heartbeat, and we will be telling everyone we know to do the same. The people at this hotel deserve for their beautiful place to be full of guests and love, because the warmth, courage and generosity they showed us is something we will never forget. Thank you so much Fairmont Doha, you are incredible."
