PB hotel design editorial

Two colonial bungalows built for British military officers in the 1880s form the architectural heart of Capella Singapore, their white-painted colonnades, terracotta-tiled roofs, and deep verandahs preserved as the social center of a property that extends across eleven forested hectares on Sentosa Island's ridge. Norman Foster's practice handled the masterplan, threading two contemporary guest wing pavilions through the existing canopy so that the heritage structures anchor rather than compete with the new construction — a balance visible in the contrast between the original buildings' arched loggias and rattan-furnished dining terraces and the dark-framed, floor-to-ceiling glazing of the modern rooms beyond. Kerry Hill Architects gave the interiors their particular register: warm-toned engineered timber floors, low-slung upholstered sofas in stone and sage, dark stained timber joinery with deliberate weight and precision, and oversized windows that frame either the Singapore Strait or the old-growth rain trees pressing against the glass. The 112-room property carries that layered quality throughout — terracotta floor tiles and slow-turning ceiling fans on the heritage verandahs, the curving hillside infinity pool terraced into the slope with stone-clad retaining walls and mature trees woven between the sun loungers, the whole property holding a quietly remarkable distance from the city it sits just minutes from.

Capella Singapore Reviews

"Having read countless 5-star reviews about Capella, I was excited to finally experience what many call an “unofficial 6-star” hotel for a special occasion that is worth a splurge. Unfortunately, my stay did not quite live up to the hype. For a room priced at nearly SGD 2,000 per night, I expected a much more exceptional experience. The villa itself was undeniably spacious, but it lacked any meaningful view, which made it feel somewhat underwhelming. For a property of this calibre, I was also surprised by the bathroom facilities — the WC was a conventional type with a cold seat and no bidet spray, which felt like a basic omission at this price point, especially when smart toilets are commonly seen in most hotels these days. The private pool was another letdown. It wasn’t large enough for a proper swim, yet not designed like a jacuzzi either — essentially just a dipping pool. We had initially planned to use it, but the presence of insects and leaves in the water made it unappealing. Breakfast was decent, with a reasonable menu selection, but the buffet spread itself lacked variety and didn’t stand out compared to other luxury hotels. I also tried the Auriga Spa. While the massage was satisfactory, it didn’t justify the high price. The spa facilities were particularly disappointing — no sauna, and only limited amenities such as a steam room, hot pool, and mist rooms. Many hotels in Singapore at a much lower price point offer far more comprehensive spa experiences. On a positive note, I really appreciated the direct access to Palawan Beach, the pet-friendliness and both the Italian and Chinese restaurants were excellent. Overall, while there were some enjoyable aspects, I found it difficult to justify the nightly rate. I had hoped for a more memorable and luxurious experience, but unfortunately, this visit fell short of expectations."

"A truly impeccable place by all means. Apart from the superb premises, it feels like Singapore Airlines crew is running a hotel. Outstanding."

"Wonderful experience staying at Capella Sentosa, an amazing escape from the hustle and bustle of Singapore just mere minutes away. Walking out onto your balcony with a picture perfect view of the beach and being surrounded by nature and birds was a wonderful welcome not easily found in Singapore. Special mention to Chef Antonios warm welcome and Alvins Wong fond farewell made it a truly special stay."
