PB hotel design editorial

Two colonial bungalows built for British military officers in the 1880s form the architectural heart of Capella Singapore, their white-painted colonnades, terracotta-tiled roofs, and deep verandahs preserved as the social center of a property that extends across eleven forested hectares on Sentosa Island's ridge. Norman Foster's practice handled the masterplan, threading two contemporary guest wing pavilions through the existing canopy so that the heritage structures anchor rather than compete with the new construction — a balance visible in the contrast between the original buildings' arched loggias and rattan-furnished dining terraces and the dark-framed, floor-to-ceiling glazing of the modern rooms beyond. Kerry Hill Architects gave the interiors their particular register: warm-toned engineered timber floors, low-slung upholstered sofas in stone and sage, dark stained timber joinery with deliberate weight and precision, and oversized windows that frame either the Singapore Strait or the old-growth rain trees pressing against the glass. The 112-room property carries that layered quality throughout — terracotta floor tiles and slow-turning ceiling fans on the heritage verandahs, the curving hillside infinity pool terraced into the slope with stone-clad retaining walls and mature trees woven between the sun loungers, the whole property holding a quietly remarkable distance from the city it sits just minutes from.

"Probably one of my favorite hotels I’ve stayed in ever. Absolutely stunning hotel & grounds. It’s very quiet and peaceful but we liked that. Breakfast was amazing. House keeping also amazing, we never saw them once. The small gifts on the pillow each night were thoughtful. Service at the pool was great. I honestly have no complaints, except we really did not want to leave.."

"This is one of the best places to stay on earth. We have been returning over and over again. The moment we arrived, we felt so welcome. The surrounding is clean, serene, and tranquil. All the staff are very friendly and helpful. Camden and his colleagues at the front desk are always ready to attend to us. During our stay, Camden has been checking on us to ensure all our needs are well taken care of. The breakfast spread is fantastic and delicious. Manish even knows what we like based on our previous stay here and daily he will prepare those special juices and fruits for us. He attended to us very well. Kayla from housekeeping keeps our room neat and clean. Even though we request for more water, she will always deliver with a smile. The room is also very quiet throughout our stay. The location is good as it is situated in the middle of Sentosa island. The feeder bus takes us to RWS and Vivo City every 30 mins. Looking at the price we paid for all the good stuff as compare to other pet friendly hotels, this is really value for money. I must thank everyone in Capella for making our stay all these years so memorable. Even my little dog Adara is so happy every time we step into Capella. It is definitely a paradise for her. Looking forward to our next stay soon. My only complain will be my holiday is not long enough to enjoy this best hotel experience in Singapore. AK"

"We took a little while to get used to this hotel after a lovely stay at Raffles Sentosa. We stayed in a garden room - this doesn't really overlook a garden but overlooks the villas and had a lovely view of a tree at eye level. Very nice staff everywhere. Excellent showers even in the pool changing rooms. Nice adult only pool. Very lovely afternoon tea for free everyday which we really appreciated - high quality and better scones than many places in England! Outstanding breakfast buffet and a la carte - everything you could possibly think of and very high quality. Good room service selection including child portions. Expensive room rates but take into account what is included. It is very hot and humid and quite a long walk from our room to the pool 3 levels down using outside stairs. (If you don't use lifts you need to take this into account). Striking architectural contrast between old colonial style and new modern rooms. Feels a long way from Singapore itself which has positives and negatives - nice view of the night city sky. Could benefit from a few more free activities per day. We were very grateful for the early check in and a very late checkout which was extremely helpful due to our evening flight. We had a nice time here."

"Went for our first Auriga Spa experience with my husband and it was excellent! We went a tad earlier than our scheduled time and got to try out the facilities, which was great! The place was so relaxing and peaceful. Grace and Shida was on point with our massages, checking if the pressure was alright etc. Grace even explained and advised how I should improve my body’s water retention 🤩 It was amazing. Thank you!"
