PB hotel design editorial

That terracotta-toned screen of horizontal aluminium louvres wrapping a 30-storey tower above Orchard Road is the first thing Singapore's design community noticed when COMO Metropolitan Singapore opened in 2012 — a facade treatment by Singapore practice SCDA Architects, led by Chan Soo Khian, that recalls traditional timber brise-soleil while functioning as a precision-engineered sun-shading system for the glazed floors behind. At intervals across the podium levels, planted terraces push through the louvre skin, softening what might otherwise be an austere curtain of warm bronze into something closer to a hillside garden suspended above the street. The 156-room tower sits within the Como Orchard development on Bideford Road, just off the main Orchard shopping corridor, at a remove that gives it genuine quiet for a city-centre address. Interiors by COMO's in-house design team maintain the controlled restraint the brand has become known for across its portfolio. Guest rooms are finished in pale oak flooring, walnut-trimmed headboards upholstered in charcoal fabric, and a palette of warm grey, chalk white, and acid yellow — the last appearing in scatter cushions and occasional rugs, providing precisely calibrated punctuation against the neutral field. Lift lobbies are lined in woven textile wall panels and polished brass doors set against geometric slate-toned stone floors, the combination carrying a quiet confidence that avoids ostentation. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views across the low-rise residential streets of River Valley, with the pagoda roofline of the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple visible in the middle distance.

"Our three nights here were a fantastic experience, made even better by the wonderful staff - particularly the incredibly hospitable and kind concierges. Despite our short stay, they went out of their way to help, learn our kids' names and to just be a friendly, welcoming face. The rooftop pool was amazing, particularly the see-through panels to peer 19 storeys down to the street below...the kids loved it. Breakfast was top-notch and our two rooms were large and well-appointed, with views across the city. It's just a walk across the street to shops and places to eat, so it's well located. The gym was also one of the better ones I've seen in a hotel, with a comprehensive range of equipment."

"This was the first time we had stayed in the Como in Singapore - and we were very impressed. The location is quite convenient - across the road from the Paragon shopping centre and close to Orchard Rd but in a quiet spot. The check in is on level 6 and then you change lifts to access the floor above. We had a room on level 14 - a good size for Singapore and excellent storage and hanging space. Great bed - very comfortable pillows. Breakfast is on level 2 - lovely selection of foods and you can order additional items. Sky bar is next to the pool on the top level - great views. I used the gym which had a good selection of equipment and did a very good yoga class (extra cost). The robot coffee machine on Level 6 is great fun. Staff were very friendly and helpful."

"Generally, this was a good experience, not great. The room was a nice corner spot with great light - with the shades up! When down, the room did not have nearly enough light and it was difficult because we couldn't see well, esp at night. The bathroom had big floor to ceiling windows that offered great views but had to be closed when we were using the facilities or showering, which made the room unusably dark. For a new hotel, the wood floors were really banged up, as was the TV, which definitely needs to be raised up a couple of feet. The biggest issue during our stay was cleanliness - floor dirty when we checked in and dirty when we checked out. Hallway carpets looked dirty and didn't appear to be vacuumed frequently. Water pressure in the shower was minimal, only one bedside table which was mostly taken up with a big speaker. Hooks, another table, and towel bars in the bathroom would be helpful. Food at the restaurant was good, fruit fresh and tasty. Croissants, made in the bakery on the first floor, were amazing! Service was friendly if not particularly timely. We enjoyed interacting with Cassandra, one of the concierges, who had excellent English and gave us great suggestions. Location was great, though, being near Orchard Road."
