PB hotel design editorial

At the junction of Middle Road and Tan Quee Lan Street, where Singapore's Bugis district transitions from colonial shophouse rows into the glass towers of the Downtown Core, a pair of beautifully restored 1920s neoclassical buildings form the low podium base from which the InterContinental Singapore rises sixteen storeys above Beach Road. The arrangement is one of the city's more considered acts of architectural layering — heritage Peranakan shopfronts preserved at street level, their whitewashed colonnades and terracotta tile references absorbed into a contemporary tower whose cream facade and regular fenestration defer to rather than dominate the historic streetscape below. Inside, the interiors navigate the same cultural conversation. Rooms in the heritage wing carry parquet floors, plantation shutters filtering the equatorial light, and lacquered chinoiserie commodes finished in black and gold — furniture that places the design squarely in the Straits-Chinese tradition of borrowed forms made local. The tower rooms shift register slightly: tufted leather headboards in slate grey, deep-pile patterned carpets in gold and teal, white-panelled walls trimmed in gilt — a more international luxury vocabulary that still defers to the region. The Chinese restaurant carries the richest detailing: rosewood round tables beneath cascading white-petal glass chandeliers, latticed rosewood screens dividing private dining rooms with the precision of a Peranakan tile pattern. On the fourth-floor terrace, a terracotta-roofed pool pavilion surrounded by royal palms holds the CBD skyline at a comfortable, unhurried distance.

"What a treat! We spent 3 nights at Fraser House while exploring Singapore. The location was excellent for both walking and getting to the MRT. The hotel has one of the most expansive and delicious breakfast we’ve ever experienced. The rooms were comfortable, quiet and well appointed. Perhaps the best part of our stay was the amazingly polite and helpful staff. Highly recommend."

"Marriott’s latest addition, Frasers House, delivered very much what I’d hoped for. Set within a beautifully restored heritage building, it manages that difficult balance between historic character and contemporary refinement with real ease. The arrival sets the tone. Driving into the courtyard, and then walking into the Lobby, there’s an immediate sense of considered luxury, carried through in the Peranakan-inspired furnishings and the smaller design details that reveal themselves the longer you look. What I appreciated most was the restraint. The atmosphere is calm, elegant and quietly confident. The lobby is spacious and polished without tipping into excess, which is harder to achieve than it sounds. The pool area is thoughtfully done. It’s the sort of space you settle into quickly, and I found myself wishing I’d allowed more time to properly enjoy it and actually get in the pool! Service was a consistent strength. Warm, attentive and highly professional, but never overbearing. That balance held across the stay, from dining through to housekeeping, and it makes a real difference. The room itself was generous and immaculately presented. Everything felt considered, from the bathroom layout to the quality of the coffee machine and in-room amenities. Nothing showy, just well judged. The turn down service was always on point! Dining was similarly strong. There’s a good range of cuisines on offer, and breakfast had real variety, spanning Asian and Western options without feeling like a compromise. The Quaich Bar is a standout. Beautifully designed and excellent beverages with attentive service. Location is another clear advantage. Sitting between Bugis and Bras Basah, it’s within easy reach of Arab Street and Kampong Glam, while still only minutes from Marina Bay and the CBD. Having direct access to Bugis MRT and the adjoining mall was excellent. Overall, a genuinely impressive stay. Comfortable, polished and easy to settle into, with a level of consistency that’s often promised but not always delivered. I’d return without hesitation."

"The service team at Frasers was wonderful. Karen at concierge was extremely helpful and assisted with our early check-in. Hayden at the Lobby Lounge was very friendly and gave excellent tips on the lobby lounge specialty drinks. A young waiter at Lucce also made our dinner most pleasant by offering me a scarf and warm water when the aircon was too cold. Thanks for the welcoming stay, we will definitely return again!"
