PB hotel design editorial

At the junction of Middle Road and Tan Quee Lan Street, where Singapore's Bugis district transitions from colonial shophouse rows into the glass towers of the Downtown Core, a pair of beautifully restored 1920s neoclassical buildings form the low podium base from which the InterContinental Singapore rises sixteen storeys above Beach Road. The arrangement is one of the city's more considered acts of architectural layering — heritage Peranakan shopfronts preserved at street level, their whitewashed colonnades and terracotta tile references absorbed into a contemporary tower whose cream facade and regular fenestration defer to rather than dominate the historic streetscape below. Inside, the interiors navigate the same cultural conversation. Rooms in the heritage wing carry parquet floors, plantation shutters filtering the equatorial light, and lacquered chinoiserie commodes finished in black and gold — furniture that places the design squarely in the Straits-Chinese tradition of borrowed forms made local. The tower rooms shift register slightly: tufted leather headboards in slate grey, deep-pile patterned carpets in gold and teal, white-panelled walls trimmed in gilt — a more international luxury vocabulary that still defers to the region. The Chinese restaurant carries the richest detailing: rosewood round tables beneath cascading white-petal glass chandeliers, latticed rosewood screens dividing private dining rooms with the precision of a Peranakan tile pattern. On the fourth-floor terrace, a terracotta-roofed pool pavilion surrounded by royal palms holds the CBD skyline at a comfortable, unhurried distance.

"Score full marks for getting all the important things spot on; room well sized, comfortable bed, quiet and all the features you need. Outstanding breakfast buffet offering. All staff absolutely on point and genuinely keen to help, everything immaculately clean (as per all things in Singapore). Really enjoyed the pool, couldn't understand why no-one else was swimming. Great location for all tourist sites, most walkable or, hotel is directly connected to Bugis MTR station. Classy bar area, but, even so, drinks overpriced. Only improvements I would suggest would be to improve signage so that it is clear the entrance from the shopping mall/MTR is made obvious. We paid for a room with a "city view" and, fair enough, it did overlook the city, albeit it was a dull view of rooftops, roads and malls, rather than anything of note. And bedroom air con seemed to either make the room very chilly, or too warm, irrespective of how you set it. These were minor issues, as Frasers House delivered a really memorable high quality experience."

"We popped into the Lobby Lounge of the hotel to have a drink. We were immediately met and accommodated by Hayden who made us feel welcome and special, an attribute which is sadly lacking in many establishments. Consequently, we enjoyed our drink and our stay. We would recommend the Lobby Lounge for a "catch-up" with friends at a great location. Many thanks from Maureen and Warren"

"We had stayed previously at China Square but with very recent ongoing circumstances in the Middle East we have to thank an exceptional staff member Freida for her skills. We are an older aged couple and were stranded and found booking new flights back to Manchester UK difficult. Freida sorted our bookings-clarified & checked everything and we are extremely grateful to her spending time over 2 days with us. It made our stay at China Square enjoyable as we relaxed and were able to see some local sites. The hotel provides an extensive buffet breakfast and its location is excellent. Thank you very much Mr & Mrs Kralevich"

"The Fraser hotel is in a great location in my opinion. It is close to Haji lane, a close train ride to the Harbor front and a good amount of other places. I loved our room. There are two big windows to look over the city with a long mirror in between. The cleanliness was fantastic, someone came to your room and tidied up for you. Which some people may not like, but I liked it and didn’t mind. The staff were very warm and welcoming. I loved the hotel, there is a beautiful pool that also overlooks the city."

"We stayed for two nights and weren’t disappointed. The room was well appointed, clean and comfortable. Every member of staff we met was polite, cheerful and professional, especially the front of house staff. The hotel was pretty central and close to places to eat and drink. We’d definitely stay here again and recommend it!"
