PB hotel design editorial

At the junction of Middle Road and Tan Quee Lan Street, where Singapore's Bugis district transitions from colonial shophouse rows into the glass towers of the Downtown Core, a pair of beautifully restored 1920s neoclassical buildings form the low podium base from which the InterContinental Singapore rises sixteen storeys above Beach Road. The arrangement is one of the city's more considered acts of architectural layering — heritage Peranakan shopfronts preserved at street level, their whitewashed colonnades and terracotta tile references absorbed into a contemporary tower whose cream facade and regular fenestration defer to rather than dominate the historic streetscape below. Inside, the interiors navigate the same cultural conversation. Rooms in the heritage wing carry parquet floors, plantation shutters filtering the equatorial light, and lacquered chinoiserie commodes finished in black and gold — furniture that places the design squarely in the Straits-Chinese tradition of borrowed forms made local. The tower rooms shift register slightly: tufted leather headboards in slate grey, deep-pile patterned carpets in gold and teal, white-panelled walls trimmed in gilt — a more international luxury vocabulary that still defers to the region. The Chinese restaurant carries the richest detailing: rosewood round tables beneath cascading white-petal glass chandeliers, latticed rosewood screens dividing private dining rooms with the precision of a Peranakan tile pattern. On the fourth-floor terrace, a terracotta-roofed pool pavilion surrounded by royal palms holds the CBD skyline at a comfortable, unhurried distance.

"We were travelling around Singapore before our Disney cruise and were unfortunately affected by the cancellation of the 7th May sailing. Disney arranged a one-night stay for us at this hotel, and we were so pleasantly surprised by the experience that we decided to extend our stay for another two nights. Having stayed at several 5-star hotels in Singapore previously, including Fairmont, Conrad, Grand Hyatt and others, we can confidently say that the service here felt far more personal and genuinely exceptional. A special thank you to Kwee Lan for the warm hospitality and care shown to us, especially after we had queued for nearly two hours to receive our rooms through Disney. Despite the hectic situation, the staff remained incredibly welcoming, attentive and helpful throughout our stay. The breakfast was easily our favourite among all the hotels we’ve stayed at in Singapore. The selection was extensive and the quality of the ingredients felt premium. We found ourselves spending almost two hours there every morning simply enjoying the experience. I’m already missing the waffles and laksa! We also dined once at the hotel’s Chinese restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. The location was another huge plus, with direct connection to Bugis Junction making everything extremely convenient. Overall, this hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. A truly memorable stay, and we would absolutely return again."

"This was my first time staying at this Luxury Collection property in Singapore, and it was an excellent stay while I was working in the city. From the moment I arrived, the service was top notch. The bell team at the driveway was warm and welcoming, and the front office handled everything with real professionalism. I would especially like to thank Kenny, the Front Office Manager, and Kamlesh from guest services, both of whom truly went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable while working in Singapore. The suite itself was elegant, spacious, and very well appointed. The decor, furnishings, and carpentry all felt refined, with a level of polish that felt on par with St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton standards. The room was also highly functional, with enough space to work comfortably while still feeling like a proper home base in the city. The bathroom was done in a classic marble style, and I also appreciated that a premium Nespresso machine was a standard in-room amenity, which made for very good coffee without having to leave the room. One detail that really stood out was the turndown service. It was thoughtful, polished, and genuinely detail-oriented. The room was always properly prepared for the evening, with the bed turned down, curtains drawn, lights adjusted, slippers placed neatly by the bed, and drinks and amenities refreshed. That kind of care makes a stay much more comfortable. The public spaces are also beautifully done. The grand lobby lounge, with its high ceilings and elegant decor, gives the hotel a very refined sense of arrival. On weekends, the live musical performances add an extra layer of charm and make the space feel even more inviting. Location-wise, the hotel is also very convenient. It is only a short drive from major areas such as Marina Bay Sands and Orchard Road, and it is right next to Bugis MRT station. Dining was another strength of the stay. The property offers several very good on-site options, from the generous buffet spreads at Luce to the more refined Chinese dining at Man Fu Yuan, as well as Japanese dining at Chikuyotei. The Lobby Lounge is also a lovely space for afternoon tea or evening dining. The hotel also features an outdoor pool and a fully equipped fitness center, which made it easy to keep some routine during a busy work period. What stood out most overall was the consistency of the service. Housekeeping, front desk, guest services, concierge, restaurant staff, and the team handling evening service were all professional, attentive, and clearly took pride in what they were doing. Overall, this was a polished and genuinely comfortable stay, and I would highly recommend the hotel to both business and leisure travelers. I look forward to returning the next time I am back in Singapore."

"Stayed here for 5 nights over all rooms are great and staff is also very very goods well located and worth it if you get it at a decent price. The only thing aircon had an issue in my room which was not fixed during my stay despite my complaint but not a deal breaker."

"Hotel is amazing (formerly the InterContinental) and the staff is impeccable! I love the location easily accessible to shopping, sights and restaurants. The Bugis MRT station is about five minutes walk. Bugis Junction Mall is connected to the hotel. Lynn the hotel Concierge is excellent. She offers great advice on unique parts of Singapore that is less touristy. If you are fortunate to have lounge access, you won’t be disappointed. The rooms are large and comfortable with free WiFi. Dining choices are great and the breakfast buffet is a culinary adventure! I have visited Singapore several times staying at The St. Regis and The Sheraton Singapore. Both are great hotels, but I really prefer the location. It is part of the BonVoy Luxury Collection."
