PB hotel design editorial

At the junction of Middle Road and Tan Quee Lan Street, where Singapore's Bugis district transitions from colonial shophouse rows into the glass towers of the Downtown Core, a pair of beautifully restored 1920s neoclassical buildings form the low podium base from which the InterContinental Singapore rises sixteen storeys above Beach Road. The arrangement is one of the city's more considered acts of architectural layering — heritage Peranakan shopfronts preserved at street level, their whitewashed colonnades and terracotta tile references absorbed into a contemporary tower whose cream facade and regular fenestration defer to rather than dominate the historic streetscape below. Inside, the interiors navigate the same cultural conversation. Rooms in the heritage wing carry parquet floors, plantation shutters filtering the equatorial light, and lacquered chinoiserie commodes finished in black and gold — furniture that places the design squarely in the Straits-Chinese tradition of borrowed forms made local. The tower rooms shift register slightly: tufted leather headboards in slate grey, deep-pile patterned carpets in gold and teal, white-panelled walls trimmed in gilt — a more international luxury vocabulary that still defers to the region. The Chinese restaurant carries the richest detailing: rosewood round tables beneath cascading white-petal glass chandeliers, latticed rosewood screens dividing private dining rooms with the precision of a Peranakan tile pattern. On the fourth-floor terrace, a terracotta-roofed pool pavilion surrounded by royal palms holds the CBD skyline at a comfortable, unhurried distance.

"From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the team. The concierge staff were exceptional, especially when helping me locate a bag I had accidentally left at Singapore Airport – what a stressful situation! They were incredibly patient, proactive, and reassuring, and I really appreciated their efforts. Our initial suite wasn’t quite what we had expected, but the team handled the situation brilliantly. A special thank you to Idah, who went above and beyond to ensure everything was resolved. Her genuine care and professionalism made all the difference. The suite itself was beautiful – spacious, modern, and very comfortable, with plenty of wardrobe space, a large bathroom stocked with lovely Byredo amenities, and fantastic views across the city. It was the perfect place to relax after a busy day exploring Singapore. The breakfast was outstanding. Without exaggeration, the eggs were the best I’ve ever had at a hotel. I can’t remember the chef’s name, but she is an absolute treasure and deserves recognition for the quality of her cooking and the care she puts into every dish. The Executive Lounge was another highlight. It’s spacious, relaxing, and offers a great selection of food and drinks throughout the day, making it a wonderful place to unwind. The location couldn’t be better. Being directly connected to the shopping mall is incredibly convenient, and with the MRT just a short walk away, getting around Singapore is effortless. There are also countless restaurants, shops, and attractions nearby. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The warm hospitality, excellent facilities, delicious breakfast, and outstanding service from the team – especially Idah and the concierge staff – made this a memorable experience. I would highly recommend Frasers House Singapore to anyone visiting the city."

"We stayed at Frasers House for three nights and had an excellent experience overall. We originally booked a regular suite but were generously upgraded to a Heritage Suite with lounge access, which we greatly appreciated. Our suite was located on the second floor, and we were initially concerned about possible noise from the busy shopping street outside the bedroom. Fortunately, this was not an issue, and the room remained quiet and comfortable throughout our stay. The suite was exceptionally spacious and gave us far more room than we actually needed. Our first impression was that the interior felt dated and showed its age, particularly in some of the flooring, trim and finishes. We briefly considered moving to a smaller but newer room, but ultimately decided to stay. Over time, the suite grew on us and became a very comfortable and relaxing place to return to. Most importantly, it was immaculately clean—almost surprisingly so considering the age and visible wear of some surfaces. The hotel has a traditional, heritage-style atmosphere rather than the modern luxury design we normally prefer. However, guests who appreciate classic elegance and a strong sense of history may find this especially appealing. The central location is also very convenient for shopping, dining and exploring Singapore. The highlight of the stay was undoubtedly the staff. Everyone we encountered, from check-in to the lounge team, was exceptionally warm, attentive and accommodating. Their genuine hospitality elevated the entire experience and is the main reason we consider this a five-star stay rather than a four-star one. We regularly used the lounge and found the service there outstanding. During our visit, the usual main breakfast venue was unavailable because it had been reserved for a delegation, so breakfast was served in the lounge instead. It became quite busy at times, but the employees handled the situation professionally and did everything possible to keep the experience pleasant. The breakfast itself was also very good. Considering the large suite, lounge access, central location and exceptional service, we felt the stay offered good value for a luxury hotel in Singapore. We are uncertain whether we would personally return because we generally prefer newer and more contemporary hotels. However, travellers who enjoy classic luxury, spacious accommodation and truly outstanding service should definitely consider Frasers House."
