PB hotel design editorial

Where Robertson Quay's entertainment strip meets the Singapore River, a dark glass tower rising from a low podium of tropical planting and warm-lit retail announced a different kind of InterContinental when it opened in 2017. The InterContinental Singapore Robertson Quay was conceived as a residential retreat rather than a conventional business hotel, and the distinction is legible from the facade outward — living walls trailing greenery across the upper floors, vertical fins of dark-framed glass giving the tower a quieter, more domestic register than the convention-centre giants clustered around Marina Bay. Inside, the 225 rooms are finished in a palette of warm oak, brushed bronze, and grey-blue textured carpeting that shifts the mood toward apartment living — tufted leather armchairs positioned at full-height windows that frame views across Fort Canning Hill and the city skyline. Coffered timber ceilings with recessed amber lighting add depth to the guest rooms without monumentalising them. At ground level, the Mallow bar anchors the podium with a curved black-granite counter, fluted bronze base detailing, and sage-upholstered bar stools arranged around an elliptical form beneath a sculptural layered ceiling element — the whole space opening toward a terrace of mature trees. The pool terrace, lined in fine mosaic tile and bordered by timber screening walls and plantings of banana and heliconia, gives the hotel its strongest gesture toward the lush, garden-city version of Singapore that the best properties here have always understood.

"We were in Singapore for 10 days - this was our 3rd planned hotel - excellent all round. The staff were very attentive. Room was kept topped up & very clean. Being able to use the club lounge was a bonus & the staff were always welcoming & friendly. My only (very minor) criticism would be the slow lifts - most days only 1 seemed to be working?? If you are the type of person who likes relaxing by a pool - then this hotel probably isn’t for you. The pool is smallish & enclosed on the 4th floor - only gets the afternoon/evening sun. Having said that - we were more than happy with it."

"Stayed here for few night while visiting Singapore with my family. Hotel is situated next to the Singapore river at Robertson quay. It is a bit further away from public transport like MRT or buses and it's a little too long walk to the city center. Nevertheless views from the room were beautiful and Taxis etc. work very well in Singapore. Room was modern and clean, amenities were good. Bathroom was big with good size shower and separate bathtub. Everywhere in the hotel service was very good, although breakfast felt sometimes little overcrowded or rushed. Probably the best thing for me was the lounge area (both indoor and outdoor areas) with tasty afternoon tea and evening capaes with drinks. Pool was too small and the sun didn't shine there very often. Also layout for the first two floors were little strange: 1) Reception on the 2nd floor - you neede to take the elevator from grounfd floor 2) Breakfast was served on the resturant next door but you had to take elevator down, go outside and then walk few meters to the restaurant 3) In order to get to the pool you neede to pass the main lobby (and basicly wear swimmingsuit, beacuse there were not good place to get changed at the pool). All in all good stay in a modern hotel, but maybe it's best for couples staycation or business travellers?"

"The Intercon at Robertson Quay is always an easy hotel choice for me. The Club Lounge on the ground floor is welcoming and the food healthy. I quite like the gym on the street level and how you can watch the world go by or turn left at the river and keep walking until you get to Marina Bay. Finally, I do like that in more and more of the IHG hotels I visit, I see filtered water taps or refillable filtered water bottles in the rooms. Much less plastic waste."
