PB hotel design editorial

Positioned at the edge of Marina Bay since 1987, when Singapore's reclaimed waterfront was still finding its identity, the Mandarin Oriental Singapore was among the first hotels to claim what has since become one of the most photographed urban panoramas on earth. The 527-room tower rises 21 floors above Marina Square, its cream-tiled facade organized in a stepped grid of balconied bays that frame the bay from virtually every angle — Moshe Safdie's Marina Bay Sands visible to the left, the Singapore Flyer arcing above the water to the right, the financial district stacked behind. The rooms carry this positional advantage deliberately: warm-toned timber joinery frames floor-to-ceiling glazing, with floral-patterned carpets in ochre, plum, and slate anchoring interiors that feel considered without being showy. The hotel's outdoor pool terrace, set at podium level, arranges tiered infinity edges and mosaic-tiled water features around a planting scheme of mature palms and white-canopied daybeds — the whole composition oriented to face Moshe Safdie's three towers directly. Inside, the Chinese restaurant Ming Court deploys a vocabulary of dark timber pergola structures, latticed screens, and round banqueting tables set on floral Axminster carpets, drawing from classical Cantonese dining hall precedents with enough spatial depth to avoid pastiche. The cumulative effect across the property is of a hotel that understood its site early and has aged into it with considerable confidence.

"Ideally located on Marina Bay, close to MBS, the hotel exudes peace and tranquility. This is Singapore so you can be sure everything works, but this hotel does it with quiet style. The bedrooms are well appointed, the breakfast buffet is outstanding and all the staff are polite and helpful. Their welcome for young children is genuine and effusive and little touches like a towel and water - as you return from a morning run- set this place apart."

"I hope the management team, including Jill Goh, reads this feedback carefully. Although your Guest Relations team emailed me for a review, I never interacted with them during my stay. I’m happy to share my experience. At check-in, other guests received welcome drinks, but my friend and I did not. I also requested a room upgrade in advance for my friend’s birthday, based on my membership benefits. I was told no upgrades were available due to occupancy, yet upgrades were offered if we paid extra. Later, a manager kindly arranged an upgrade during our stay, which I appreciated. However, both rooms had issues. In the first room, there were stains on the pillow, a spider, and marks on the mirror. In the second room, the shower pressure was weak, one button was broken, and a loose cable near the bed posed a safety concern. Communication was another challenge. The concierge made a restaurant reservation I had not confirmed, and I had to cancel it myself without any apology. Similarly, a birthday cake I stored with the hotel was reportedly discarded without notice, then later found in the front office fridge. This lack of coordination and internal communication was frustrating. While some staff were polite and tried to help, the overall experience felt disorganized and inefficient. Being asked to “email feedback” instead of resolving issues on-site was disappointing. The property has strong facilities, but service execution needs significant improvement. Ironically, I still received generic follow-up emails saying I had a “memorable stay.” Looking forward to another email."

"We came to Singapore to celebrate our wedding anniversary and chose Mandarin Oriental because of its location and read great reviews about it. I also was very excited to see the updated renovations they've done recently to the hotel and it did not disappoint. Everything with this hotel, top to bottom was just beautiful. No details missed! HAUS65 team was exceptional and made our stay memorable in every way. Thank you for their help for getting us last minute reservations at Ce La Vi and for confirming our airport transportations since we changed the time the last minute. I love how everyone greeted us by our name every time we come to the lounge. The room was spacious, clean and the colors are just calm and peaceful. Housekeeping never missed a detail, even gave us a cable tie for our phone charger cables that were plugged right by the night stand. I used the M.O app to speak to concierge and reserve a spa appointment for the next day and it all went smoothly! That was really nifty- all done in an app! I wish we had more time as we didn't have time to relax by the pool. We definitely would love to come back."

"The Mandarin Oriental is a wonderful hotel. I am a person who has traveled a lot and I can be quite particular. This hotel was a 9.8. The club staff Uni-Sera and Brittany (and others whose names I don't have) enhanced our stay with great service and open conversation. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a top shelf experience. A 9.8 out of 10. The 10 would be there but Dolce Vita staff to visit Lavo in the Sands food quality would be improved. I would stay at this hotel again tomorrow. Bravo Mandarin Todd Addison"

"May I firstly express our sincere thanks for our fantastic time in your wonderful hotel. It was my wife’s 60th Birthday whilst there, and your hotel and the hotel team, made it truly special and memorable. The room was lovely, spacious and with the massive view across the whole of Marina bay was incredible. Our travel arranger Dialaflight had advised the hotel it was my wife's 60th birthday whilst there, and as a surprise upon arriving we were provided free access to the Club lounge . The Club lounge - providing free drinks, evening food, a la carte breakfast and was wonderful. Special thanks to the staff providing a birthday cake and champagne at breakfast and singing happy birthday !!!! The location was great, easy access to nearby hawker market and two local shopping centres. Plus close access to nearby MRT and walking distance to Raffles and Marina Bay gardens. The hotel and all of Singapore was spotless and clean. Every member of the hotel team were polite, friendly and could not do enough to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The Mandarin Oriental made staying in lovelly Singapore city absolutely marvellous. We have come away saying this is one of the best hotel we have EVER stayed in!!!! And would one day hope we can come back again. A big THANKYOU, and please pass our appreciation and thanks to all the club lounge team."
