PB hotel design editorial

Yabu Pushelberg rarely gets to build from the ground up at this scale, and their inaugural collaboration with Raffles produced something genuinely singular: Raffles Sentosa Singapore, which arrived in March 2025 as the city-state's first all-villa resort. Spread across 24 acres of tropical hillside on Sentosa Island, the property gave the Toronto-based studio total authorship — master planning, architecture, landscaping, interiors, furniture design, and art direction all flowing from a single creative intelligence. The result is a coherent world rather than a decorated building. The low-slung villas, finished in warm sand-toned render and articulated with deep vertical fins, step down the canopy edge in terraced formations that keep the surrounding trees in constant view. Inside the 62 private pool villas, that same discipline holds. Coffered ceilings in French oak absorb light rather than reflect it, and the carved hexagonal headboard panels — backlit to glow like lanterns at night — carry a geometry rooted in traditional Southeast Asian craft without reproducing it literally. The main restaurant deploys a checkerboard floor of travertine and deep green marble beneath Mathieu Lehanneur's Vertigo pendants, while hand-painted blush murals of ghostly forest trees soften the formal symmetry. At the entry forecourt, a vast circular water feature cascades at dusk against an amber sky, establishing the sensory register that everything inside then sustains — tropical without being folksy, refined without going cold.

"A very enjoyable, intimate afternoon high tea experience. Deserts by Janice Wong were a standout."

"The stay experience was materially enhanced by exquisite service and authentic cuisine. Some minor inconsistencies presented, where service staff need to align better with the Raffles standard but, otherwise, the team certainly exceeds expectations in all aspects. I'm grateful for the meticulous pre-arrival arrangements by Jeannie (who is patient both on phone and in emails), JC (Asst. FOM) and Christopher (Asst. Head Butler), who strive to meet preferences and specifications. The butlers, Rose, Kenneth and Van, were always attentive and hospitable. Front office team, comprising Rifki (DM), Thomas and Flinnegan did their utmost to resolve queries and issues. The F&B team, helmed by Chef. Mr. Dominic Lim (who is extremely knowledgeable and approachable), Mr. Rajan, Ms. Mong, and Mr. Ee Sim were knowledgeable about menus and beverage pairings. Complemented by friendly team members such as Taylor, Sammie, Fernando, Eric and Vera, the dining experiences always felt luxurious. Drinks were well-curated by James, Joanna and Rika, all of who were professional and conversational. Everyone, from in-villa team members (Khai), to the spa team (Ziana, Mayang and Nurul), to the senior management staff (Mr. Giovanni, Mr. Giani and Ms. Jessie) were always on ground and at hand to ensure guest satisfaction and wellbeing. The only drawback would be how, in the absence of a club lounge for premium members, there was no aperitivo or cocktail hour. Tea was lacklustre, served in sachets instead of loose leaves and strainers. That said, I greatly anticipate my upcoming stay(s) and trust that the Raffles brand would continue to create memorable domestic vacation moments. Dr. Sam Jay Yeo"

"We loved our stay here. The villa was more beautiful than we expected - a lovely lounge area, comfortable bedroom and bathroom. All with great amenities/toiletries/treats. We loved the pool - it was big enough to swim in and the outdoor bed was great too. The weather is very humid so the excellent a/c was appreciated. The staff were very kind and helpful. We were able to access the villa early and leave slightly late which was much appreciated too. The Sentosa Sling was great. Breakfast was a la carte but with a small buffet - maybe more buffet items would work better. We also ate at the the Chinese restaurant and the Grill. There is a slight wait for buggies and more could be done to encourage guests to walk between venues with clearer shorter routes than the buggies take. It would also be good if there could be a free activity each day rather than once a week (for example cocktail making) and it would also be good if there could be a central lounge/library for relaxing. We appreciated the Rolls Royce transfer to the Cappela Hotel. This was an expensive treat at the end of a long trip away but it was worth it for the excellent experience. Staff should feel confident that they are providing an excellent place to stay."

"We are a family of four who regularly tries different hotels in Singapore for breaks. Recently stayed there in a 2 bedroom pool villa for a short 2 night stay. While practically a brand new property, the team providing service seems very inexperienced. Let's start with good first impressions. While waiting for check-in, the hotel offered to fix us drinks so we asked for a recommendation. The Raffles Sling, their variation of the Singapore Sling was offered including a non-alcoholic version. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic variations were very good. The villa was almost brand new. The pool was great especially in the summer heat. The cabana next to it was in the perfect position. Love the additional towels provided so we can make maximum use of the pool. The bedrooms were small but adequate. The bathroom was very well appointed. The lounge area was nice with a well stocked bar but lacked a dining table so if you wanted a meal in the villa, you would have to dine outside in the heat as there was an outdoor table with chairs by the pool. Otherwise, you have no choice but to attempt to dine on the coffee table. Non alcoholic beverages were on the house. On the surface, the Raffles Sentosa looked like a great choice. Dinner at the Empire Grill was very nice and so too was dinner at the Royal China. The noise from the kitchen in the Royal China, the only thing that distracted us in an otherwise perfect evening. As the day went by, we had 4 different occasions where the butler would ring our door to ask if we needed this or that. Along with a turndown service team who came at odd hours, things started to get untangled from this point on. Calling on the team for buggies etc would result in them ringing the doorbell 5-10 minutes early so we simply asked them to wait. However, I did like the fact that the team showed up with a buggy 5 minutes before our dinner reservation that night. The room service menu was very limited but we tried ordering from it anyway. The laksa soup was very thick as if they poured in a can of coconut cream into it instead. Most of the food options that you can order from the restaurants were not available in the room service menu. The breakfast menu was quite inflexible as it didn't allow us to order some dishes we found at the venue. It was a full set and no individual items can be ordered. While the villa was brand new, our second room had no room at all to store our luggage or a luggage rack. In fact, there were no luggage racks to be found. In the master bedroom, there were two places inside the wardrobe where you can place your luggage but this was built into the wardrobe at a very inconvenient height. There was no room to hang a pair of trousers with its full length down the clips as your luggage would get in the way. In fact, even shirts hung there would often get in the way while we tried to access our luggage to grab things from it during our stay. The hot water kettle was also placed in a very odd spot. It was inside the bar; a wooden cabinet with the kettle's power cable plugged into it. If you were to use the kettle as-is, the steam produced would eventually ruin the wooden cabinet. When we were dining at the Empire Grill for breakfast, my wife's order of coffee took almost 20 minutes. It would appear there were some logistics issues at the Empire Grill during breakfast as guests that were seated after her got their coffee before her order of an Americano (black coffee). Shout out to Vera who assisted my wife during breakfast. She had the people skills as well as the organisational skills required to quickly get my wife her coffee and breakfast and leaving her with a smile at the end of the experience instead of a frown. There were almost no interactions with the butler team on the second day except when we called for them which is good as we didn't like to be constantly barraged with "How is your stay? Do you need anything?" The first example clearly demonstrating the inexperience of the service at the Raffles Sentosa came when we checked out. The previous night, we spoke to the butler team on the phone and organised to have a buggy pick us up at a certain time. We informed them even though it seemed strange the question came up that we are a party of 4 and we will have 5 items with us. Given that the butler team transported us to our villa with all this information, it appears opportunities to capture guest information was lost. At the very least, we expected a reconfirmation but this information was asked as if there were no information about us whatsoever. The following morning, our doorbell did not ring at the appointed time for our buggy pickup. We had to call the butler to find out what happened. The second example of the inexperience came when the butler showed up with a small buggy. When he showed at the door, he realised we were 4 people with 5 luggage items. The butler then *suggested* that I help him with the rest of the bags while he took 2 bags. He eventually disappeared but came back in 5 minutes with a bigger buggy. He seemed to want us to know he already took proactive steps by taking two bags all by himself and his bigger buggy should now accommodate us as well as the rest of the items. Despite this, it was a tight fit as my wife was squeezed between luggage. As expected, we were late leaving the resort. The taxi we organised was also waiting for some time with the cost of the late fee of $6 charged to our account! The delay caused by the issues with the butler service! All of this would not have been issues if a) detailed information about our arrangements were passed to the morning butler b) two buggies were organised; one to transport people and the other to transport bags and c) the buggy actually came on time. Suffice to say, this has put a rather huge black mark on the Raffles brand. At the very least, we will never choose to stay at the Raffles Sentosa again."

"Dining at Empire Grill at Raffles Sentosa was a truly memorable experience from start to finish. The setting strikes a perfect balance between elegance and comfort—sophisticated without feeling overly formal, making it easy to relax and enjoy the evening. The highlight, without question, was the Tenderloin steak. Expertly cooked to a beautiful medium-rare, it was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The slight char on the outside gave way to a perfectly pink center, showcasing both quality ingredients and precise execution. Paired with a vibrant herb sauce that added a fresh, aromatic lift, every bite felt thoughtfully composed rather than overly complicated. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The staff demonstrated a strong understanding of the menu, offering recommendations that genuinely enhanced the experience. Timing between courses was well-paced, allowing the meal to flow naturally. Overall, Empire Grill delivers a polished dining experience that combines quality cuisine, refined ambiance, and excellent service. It’s the kind of place you’d choose for a special occasion or simply when you want to enjoy a meal done exceptionally well."
