PB hotel design editorial

When Syed Mohamed Alsagoff commissioned Regent Alfred John Bidwell of Swan & Maclaren to expand what had begun as a modest beachside bungalow in 1887, nobody could have anticipated that the resulting Raffles Hotel would become the most mythologised address in colonial Asia. The main building as it stands today — three storeys of chalk-white Neoclassical plasterwork, terracotta-tiled hipped roofs, and deep verandah arcades wrapped around a central courtyard — dates from 1899, and emerged from a two-year, SGD$160-million restoration completed in 2019 under the direction of Champalimaud Design. That intervention brought the property's 115 suites back to a condition that honours the bones of the original without lapsing into pastiche: dark-stained timber four-poster beds anchor rooms with soaring coved ceilings and original arched fanlights, blue-and-white Chinoiserie ceramic lamps set against linen-pale panelling, botanical-patterned rugs in ink and cream grounding the dark hardwood floors. The public spaces carry the atmosphere of a place that has always known exactly what it is. The Long Bar, reimagined with its original black-lacquered counter, green-shaded pendant lamps, paddle fans suspended from a coffered teak ceiling, and a geometric black-and-white encaustic tile floor, situates the Singapore Sling cocktail in its proper theatrical context. Beyond it, the pool pavilion — its colonnaded loggia framing a mosaic-tiled lap pool with Marina Bay's skyline hovering just beyond the treeline — makes the argument, quietly but convincingly, that no amount of contemporary construction has quite displaced this compound from the centre of Singapore's self-image.

"I visited Raffles Hotel Singapore on 26th March 2026 to attend the ‘SJ60 Commemorative Matcha Sling’ at the Jubilee Ballroom. I would like to express my appreciation for the excellent service provided by the hotel staff. The team was courteous, prompt, and attentive to guests. I would like to specially thank Mr Benayass for his attentiveness and commitment. Senarath Dissanayake"

"Such a grand hotel, with so much history! From the minute you arrive (in your limo, Grab, taxi, whatever) and are greeted at the front by Malvin aka 'The General' in his splendid uniform and his team, you are whisked away to another world, where your every need is attended to and everyone remembers your name. Our personal butlers, Surej and Samantha, were there to help with anything, and although we did not use them a lot, it was nice to know we could rely on them. Samantha arranged for us to have afternoon tea in the lobby, and that was a wonderful experience. We also really enjoyed the hotel tour with Rosslee, aka 'The Lobby Lizard' who is an amazing fountain of information on all things Raffles. I highly recommend this tour to anyone staying there, as you will learn many interesting things about the hotel and the various people who have stayed there over the years. If you have a late flight, the hotel will hold your luggage for you while you do more sightseeing, and when you come back, you can use the shower rooms up by the pool area to freshen up before leaving for the airport. The hotel is very close to the City Hall MRT and Raffles City, which has shopping and many places to eat. All in all, a wonderful experience, and we look forward to returning there some day."

"Day 1 and I’m happy to be checking into a refined 5 star hotel. Although our suite was not available (we arrived around 11.30 am after leaving the Eastern & Oriental Express), we were welcomed enthusiastically and provided with a temporary key to enable us to sit by the pool, take a dip and savour a long lunch. Our suite became available in due course and did not disappoint. Our upgrade was appreciated. Day 2 and I’m relaxed in our tropical resort paradise. We have explored more of the rather rambling layout of buildings, gardens and colonnades that make up the Raffles Hotel, its eateries and shopping arcade. We enjoy some local sightseeing (Cloud Forest and Flower Dome), an afternoon by the pool and an exquisite dinner at the Butchers Block. Day 3 and I feel completely at home. When the doorman says ‘welcome home’ after sightseeing, he means every word. Lunch at Binomio, a splash in the pool and dinner in the Courtyard ends the magic spell. Day 4 and I’m heading to my other home!"

"This is much more than a here. It’s a look into a world of elegance and opulence. It’s huge and while we didn’t stay there and thus couldn’t access certain area much of it is public. Go to the Long Bar to sample a Singapore Sling in its birthplace. Stroll along the promenade lined with shops like Rolex, Van Cleef and Arpells and more. Wander through a he lush gardens, check out the ornate iron work and stained glass. Take home part of the Raffles experience from the boutique. And do not miss the famous doorman! I’ll leave him as a surprise for you! If you get a chance to see this place, go!"
