PB hotel design editorial

Fifteen acres of landscaped gardens in the Tanglin district, just minutes from Orchard Road yet buffered from it by a canopy of mature tropical planting, gave the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore an unusual proposition when it opened in 1971: a city hotel with the spatial logic of a resort. That quality remains its defining characteristic across three distinct wings — the original Garden Wing, the Valley Wing, and the Tower Wing — whose combined 747 rooms spread across a campus rather than a single vertical stack. The aerial view confirms the generous ground coverage, the curved balconies of the Valley Wing cascading with planted greenery in a sculptural tiered formation that carries the atmosphere of a hanging garden against the Singapore skyline. The Valley Wing's room interiors, refreshed in recent years, work in a palette of warm sand, greige linen, and dark-stained timber — woven-panel wardrobe fronts and upholstered seating in neutral velvets giving the spaces a considered residential calm. A gold-leafed coffered ceiling panel in the suite category introduces a measured opulence without disrupting the overall restraint. The Cantonese restaurant Shang Palace moves in a different register entirely: lacquered red ceiling panels framed in ebonised timber, a floral-patterned carpet in crimson and blush, crystal chandeliers, and hand-painted silk wallcovering with prunus blossom motifs composing a room that belongs firmly to the grand Chinese dining tradition. Together the wings hold a hotel that has, across five decades, managed to feel simultaneously metropolitan and unhurried.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Reviews

"With children, this is one of the best hotels to stay in Singapore because they have a waterplay area and a soft play area in the hotel. The pool is also great and a lot of breakfast options too for kids. However, the service is a little slow and unorganised (when we checked in they gave us the wrong room and it took them a few hours to fix it, but to be fair to them, they waived off one night's charge), the breakfast is too packed and there aren't nearly enough tables with waits as long as 20-25 minutes, etc. Also, the hotel is a little old and needs some upgradation."

"The meaning of SHANGRI-LA is a remote beautiful imaginary place where life approaches perfection : utopia. This was our first time staying at a Shangri-la hotel and upon our arrival we were informed by Frances that this is their original flagship location. She welcomed us and informed us of the amenities and facilities of the property. They are celebrating their 55 anniversary, and I am celebrating my first time in Singapore along with my wife's return here after 15 years. We stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel exudes luxury and a classic elegance that is peaceful and inviting. You are greeted by the Shangri-la scent which has notes of ginger and bergamot that fills the spacious hotel lobby. There are beautiful sculptures, foliage, and flowers that adorn the decor and add to the design of the property. We stayed in a Garden Wing Deluxe King with a city view. The room was a spacious, clean, and comfortable home for our brief stay. At my request we arrived to an extra pillow and a note that I had written for my wife. In addition, the hotel provided fresh fruit and a welcome note along with special chocolate from Janice Wong. I appreciate that they executed on my requests and enhanced our first impressions with their own touches that made us feel welcomed and special. One of our colleagues remarked facetiously, "well I didn't get chocolate in my room" (more on that later). The facilities are nice, including the fitness center and the outdoor pool. I am always a fan of fitness centers with high ceilings because I like to jump rope, when possible. Even though I didn't use the pool of the hotel, I like that the hotel looks like it can attract and appeal to a wide variety of travelers and guest types. There was even a hot tub and sauna in their fitness area. Many hotels have some, but not all. My wife and I both enjoyed the variety of dining options starting with The Line where we had international breakfast buffet. We also had snacks and dinner with a colleague at the Waterfall Ristorante Italiano. My mushroom ravioli (can't remember the name was delicious). Finally, I have to mention Shop house where I had my eye on a salted chocolate chip cookie. While there, Executive Chef Gregory and a colleague observed my cookie conundrum. To make a long story short, I purchased the chocolate chip cookie and some additional products, while Chef Gregory purchased a second raspberry/lemon lava cake cookie for us. It was truly a sweet gesture and I can almost justify the 17 hr flight to return for another cookie, or both. I want to share a special thanks to Tatiana for giving me a tour of the hotel. She sold me on the different elements of the property that most guests do not get to see (based on my industry). Our tour and conversation really left me impressed with an already lovely property. She was one of the many people that make a Shangri-la hotel (see opening definition) special. Keep in mind this was our first time staying at a Shangri-la. It set a great precedent for what we expect for future stays at the brand. I would like also like to thank Gracia for being pleasant in each encounter. Everyone was helpful in anticipation of any of our needs, but she along with Frances were the stars for any time I stood in the lobby. Gracia helped us arrange a gift to be delivered to one of our colleagues that was also staying at the hotel. We left her with a bracelet and a note for our friend, and she was helpful in ensuring that it was delivered, and this time the gift was delivered to our colleague with a chocolate cake (she got chocolate in her room 😉 ). Thank you for being our first home in Singapore. We look forward to returning and feel comfortable recommending it. Our experience at Shangri-la Singapore was real."

"Good day, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Lavin and Jason for their exceptional hospitality during my recent visit to The Line. Their warm service, professionalism, and attentiveness truly elevated my dining experience. I also want to express how much I enjoyed the biryani promotion. Please convey my compliments to the chef the biryani was excellent. As you know biryani is a meaningful dish with many regional variations across India, and it was wonderful to see it presented with such care and authenticity. Thank you once again for the wonderful experience. I look forward to returning soon."
