PB hotel design editorial

Fifteen acres of landscaped gardens in the Tanglin district, just minutes from Orchard Road yet buffered from it by a canopy of mature tropical planting, gave the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore an unusual proposition when it opened in 1971: a city hotel with the spatial logic of a resort. That quality remains its defining characteristic across three distinct wings — the original Garden Wing, the Valley Wing, and the Tower Wing — whose combined 747 rooms spread across a campus rather than a single vertical stack. The aerial view confirms the generous ground coverage, the curved balconies of the Valley Wing cascading with planted greenery in a sculptural tiered formation that carries the atmosphere of a hanging garden against the Singapore skyline. The Valley Wing's room interiors, refreshed in recent years, work in a palette of warm sand, greige linen, and dark-stained timber — woven-panel wardrobe fronts and upholstered seating in neutral velvets giving the spaces a considered residential calm. A gold-leafed coffered ceiling panel in the suite category introduces a measured opulence without disrupting the overall restraint. The Cantonese restaurant Shang Palace moves in a different register entirely: lacquered red ceiling panels framed in ebonised timber, a floral-patterned carpet in crimson and blush, crystal chandeliers, and hand-painted silk wallcovering with prunus blossom motifs composing a room that belongs firmly to the grand Chinese dining tradition. Together the wings hold a hotel that has, across five decades, managed to feel simultaneously metropolitan and unhurried.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Reviews

"I am a Shangri-la Circle Diamond member and when I heard my favorite chefs from Satoo at Shangri-la Jakarta came to do an Indonesian food festival at The Line, of course, I had to go! I called the Dining Reservations telephone line and a very helpful Ms Victoria took down my two reservations for Thursday night dinner as well as Monday lunch and confirmed that for Monday thru Wednesday dining, all Shangri-la Circle members are entitled to a 55 percent discount in celebration of the hotel's 55th birthday. Since I do not have the app on my overloaded mobile phone, Victoria graciously gave me the number of the Shangri-la Circle helpline which I called and initially chose the English option, but nobody picked up the call, so I redialed, chose the Chinese option, and got through to a very helpful Ms Shadow at the mainland China call center who suggested I log in to the website on my mobile browser to access my QR code which The Line staff needed to scan to give me my 55 percent discount on Monday I arrived 10 minutes ahead of the 18:00 opening of The Line on Thursday evening and was initially greeted Wan Qi and then by Pravina who claimed to not have my reservation and I told her I had made two reservations, one for Thursday dinner and another for Monday lunch. The restaurant was not full and I was seated at table 110 and served by Nelson who graciously helped me when I expressed my preference to settle the bill in advance and showed him by Shangri-la Circle member QR code which would enable to earn points on dining. I also mentioned to Pravina that I would like to request seating at table 110 again for Monday lunch if possible and she said, Monday lunch seating is already full and said she would need to seat me outside in the 35 degree heat and I said no way! She then said all she has left for Monday lunch is table 910 under the staircase and I said, well, it's better than being seated outdoors to sweat in the blazing heat! The Filipino-themed dinner on Thursday night was awesome. From the Porchetta Lechon, no doubt inspired by the famous Lechon Liempo, to the Kilawen Na Tanigue, to the Apahap (Barramundi/Asian seabass) Escabeche - everything was amazing! I also love the Indian selections, including the delicious Lamb Curry with pieces of bone-in lamb shank (the marrow inside the bone is a local delicacy!). The dessert selections included world-famous Halo Halo curated by Chef Yong and a very smooth and yummy Durian Cake! I received impeccable service from the team, including Nelson, William, and Serena Chua who was so helpful - she brought me my initial glass of ice so I could really enjoy the Calamansi Iced Tea, so perfect for the heat wave in Singapore this month. Sous Chef Kelvin Lee and his team, as well as the invited chefs from the Philippines have done an outstanding job to present this week-long Filipino Food Fiesta in celebration of the SLS' 55th birthday! I am already looking forward to Monday's lunch when Sous Chef Aris Diono and Chef Anwar, my favorite chefs from Satoo Shangri-la Jakarta culinary team start the next round of Asian Flavours - A Celebration of Shangri-la Singapore's 55th Birthday (actual date April 23rd, 2026)!"

"Our family of 7 enjoyed the weekend lunch buffet at The Line restaurant and same time celebrated someone's 21st birthday there. The place was quite busy and full but staff remained attentive and cheerful. A good variety of food with many thumbs up on the beef steak and dessert section. Special bravo goes to Ms Shangeethaa of F&B Reservations who assisted me on the phone and by email on checking details of the menu and relaying our request of the table choice. A real Shangri-la experience which never fails to impress customers. Just made another buffet booking for another social gathering. Can't wait to go back."

"We stayed at Shangri-La Singapore for two nights, with two half days and a full day to enjoy the hotel. Upgrading to the Valley Wing was 100% worth it. It felt almost all-inclusive, with breakfast, afternoon tea (with champagne), and evening canapés. Breakfast was a standout—served in a quiet, exclusive area, all à la carte, and genuinely one of the nicest dining experiences we’ve had. The room was spacious, spotless, and properly high-end. The pool area is large and clean, with plenty of sunbeds and lots of grass space for kids to run around. Service was excellent throughout—really attentive, friendly, and helpful. Check-in was a nice touch too, seated with a complimentary beer while everything was sorted. The only downside was a large hold placed on our card (around £2,000), which took about 10 days to clear. It wasn’t spent, but it did tie up a big chunk of our holiday money. I’d recommend using a prepaid or travel card to avoid this. Overall, a fantastic stay. The Valley Wing really makes it special, and we’d absolutely come back."

"Good Location. But the cost is way over the top for a 5 star Hotel in Singapore. We paid over 400 Dollars for a Thai night dinner and it wasn't the greatest of Thai food. If indeed you find anything that resembled Thai food. We had a room service one night for two hamburgers ad fries etc. The usual junk food fair. They came in with a portable table and set up a small restaurant, (the only way to describe it) And we paid for that. So much for room service and a burger at that kind of cost with the overboard fanfare. The pool are was ok, but two glasses of Sprite for 19 bucks was a bit much too. Suffice to say when we go back to Singapore later this year (Perhaps) We wont be staying there. When I questioned all this I got a lot of lip service and empty promised from the Manager (Doubt it was the manger though). So unless you dont care about these types of things you might want to rethink it as a Place to say in the 5 star range. WAY to expensive."

"We stayed for three nights on the Club floor at the Shangri-La Singapore—probably our tenth visit, and it remains our go-to hotel in the city. We love the location, right next to the Botanical Gardens in a peaceful part of town. As a family hotel, it can get busy with children, especially during school holidays, but the rooms are spacious, well maintained, and housekeeping is consistently excellent. The Club floor is quieter and offers a good selection of food and drinks throughout the day. While the property is starting to show its age, the service remains reliably good, making it a comfortable and convenient choice for both families and leisure travelers."
