PB hotel design editorial

Fifteen acres of landscaped gardens in the Tanglin district, just minutes from Orchard Road yet buffered from it by a canopy of mature tropical planting, gave the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore an unusual proposition when it opened in 1971: a city hotel with the spatial logic of a resort. That quality remains its defining characteristic across three distinct wings — the original Garden Wing, the Valley Wing, and the Tower Wing — whose combined 747 rooms spread across a campus rather than a single vertical stack. The aerial view confirms the generous ground coverage, the curved balconies of the Valley Wing cascading with planted greenery in a sculptural tiered formation that carries the atmosphere of a hanging garden against the Singapore skyline. The Valley Wing's room interiors, refreshed in recent years, work in a palette of warm sand, greige linen, and dark-stained timber — woven-panel wardrobe fronts and upholstered seating in neutral velvets giving the spaces a considered residential calm. A gold-leafed coffered ceiling panel in the suite category introduces a measured opulence without disrupting the overall restraint. The Cantonese restaurant Shang Palace moves in a different register entirely: lacquered red ceiling panels framed in ebonised timber, a floral-patterned carpet in crimson and blush, crystal chandeliers, and hand-painted silk wallcovering with prunus blossom motifs composing a room that belongs firmly to the grand Chinese dining tradition. Together the wings hold a hotel that has, across five decades, managed to feel simultaneously metropolitan and unhurried.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Reviews

"We had an overall lovely stay at the Shangri-La Singapore. The hotel is beautiful, the staff were friendly, and we really enjoyed our time there. A particular highlight was the family facilities. Both the Splash Zone and the main pool always had attentive lifeguards on duty, which made us feel very comfortable and safe, especially with children. However, we were quite disappointed with the lack of information provided at check-in. We weren’t given any overview of the hotel facilities or what was included with our stay. For example, we only discovered from another guest that access to the Splash Zone was included. By the time we found out, we’d already missed the opportunity to use it on our first day. As access was based on the number of nights stayed, this also meant we couldn’t use it on our check-out day without paying extra. We also weren’t told basic information such as breakfast times or where to find details about the hotel’s facilities. In addition, we assumed the indoor soft play area was included, but later found out it wasn’t. A simple overview at check-in explaining the facilities, opening times, and what is and isn’t included would have made a big difference to our experience. Despite this, we had a very enjoyable stay and would recommend the hotel. With a more informative check-in process, the guest experience would be even better."

"We had a wonderful stay at Shangri-La Santosa and found it to be an excellent choice for families. The hotel has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, with plenty of facilities and activities that kept everyone entertained. The rooms are a little dated compared to some newer hotels, but they were clean, spacious, and mostly very comfortable, making for a pleasant stay overall. What really stood out was the service. The staff were consistently friendly, welcoming, and happy to help, which made us feel well looked after throughout our visit. Overall, if you're looking for a family-friendly resort with great amenities, pleasant service, and a comfortable stay, Shangri-La Santosa is a fantastic option. We'd happily return."

"The service here, especially in the restaurants and attending to room cleaning, has fallen away considerably over the years. We have stayed at this hotel many times since 2003. The drop-off in standards is palpable. Staff are fewer on the ground. Venue ‘management level’ staff are poorly trained and, watching staff interactions, one is left with feeling that the culture is not a happy one. It’s really sad. It’s still a Gand old hotel, but that’s about the only reason to stay here now."

"If there was something below zero I would give it I am a local living in Singapore a member of the Chi Spa. Every Saturday I walk in for my massage which everyone sill agree is supposed to be a RELAXING experience . HOW can this be when the Shangri La has cut the parking coupon from 24 hrs free parking to 3 hours parking: it takes 30 mins to change clothes & lie down in the lounge getting ready for the experience , 60 mins for the massage followed with at least 30 mins relaxing in the lounge followed by 30 mins getting dressed & paying ones bill.!!! The gentleman at the desk says parking coupons are for IN HOUSE guests , didn’t know that tourist drive over from overseas. Instead of cutting your nose to spite your face the Shangri La should make the Chi Spa parking coupon at least 6 hours . Some clients like myself like to follow up with lunch at the lounge.!!!"
