PB hotel design editorial

The white-painted colonial barracks that line Sentosa Island's former British military compound were built in the early twentieth century to house troops stationed at one of the Empire's most strategically prized outposts. Converted and opened in 2019, The Barracks Hotel Sentosa preserves the two-storey verandah buildings with careful restraint — terracotta-tiled pitched roofs, cross-braced timber balustrades, and colonnaded ground-floor arcades remain intact, the broad lawns fronting the facade kept clear in a way that honours the parade-ground geometry of the original garrison. The interiors, designed around a colonial explorer aesthetic, layer dark-stained timber panelling with brass fittings, studded leather campaign trunks, and director's chairs in the public spaces — a vocabulary that sits somewhere between a gentleman's club and a well-appointed expedition outfitter. Guest rooms carry exposed beam ceilings, walnut-toned wall cladding, and deep-soaking stone tubs visible through open bathroom thresholds, the overall atmosphere evoking a well-travelled officer's private quarters rather than a resort hotel room. Vintage travel photography framed in gilt borders and open wardrobes with carved timber grilles extend the narrative further. The pool courtyard, edged with black river pebbles and tropical plantings of heliconia and palm, runs alongside the original barracks wing, the juxtaposition of immaculate white Heritage architecture against lush equatorial greenery giving the property its most distinctive quality — a resort that carries the weight of history without being overwhelmed by it.

"Staying at this beautifully restored barracks was deeply meaningful for me, as my father was stationed at a different barracks here in Singapore back in the 1950s when he served in the RAF. Walking through a heritage property with that shared history made for some truly special, nostalgic moments. The physical property itself is spectacular. The facilities are absolutely top-notch, immaculate, and preserved with incredible care and exceptional quality. It offers a very peaceful, highly organized environment. The staff, mostly a wonderful team of young professionals, are incredibly polite, respectful, and doing a fantastic job maintaining such high standards. They are highly dedicated to their routines and run the hotel like clockwork. If we had to note a personal preference, the overall vibe leans toward a quiet, structured, and almost stoic calm rather than a casual, chatty warmth. The young team is wonderfully sweet and helpful when you engage with them, though they do seem very focused on ensuring every protocol is followed perfectly. This level of care and precision is excellent, and many travelers will absolutely love how seamlessly everything runs. For us, we simply realized we personally favor a slightly softer, more informal style of hospitality. It is a truly exceptional, high-quality property that we are so glad we experienced."

"From the moment we arrived the facilities and the room exceeded our expectations. We swam laps in the fabulous 30 metre pools and chilled in the pool spa inlets. The staff were warm and friendly and made us feel at home. All our requests were met and superbly attended to particularly by Farez and Zaffry. The Barracks is ideally located with easy access to the MRT, the Metro and the attractions of Singapore. We could not find fault with any aspect of our stay and departed feeling relaxed. We will be back."

"Barracks is a charming oasis of calm and serenity in the midst of all the noise and hustle-bustle that is Sentosa on a long weekend. The rooms were charming albeit slightly small in size, but was more than compensated by the direct access to the pool from our back door. Our favourite hangout was the excellent pool. Another highlight was the daily afternoon cocktails at the Living Room which we throroughly enjoyed. Special mention to Vivien Tan, one of the hotel's attentive and personable managers, who mixes a mean cocktail ( I had the Barracks Negroni, but there is an impressive wide selection of other tea-based cocktails too). We were pleasantly surprised by the generous canapés that came along with the cocktails. In fact, we didn't really need to have much dinner after having our fill. We agreed that this was one of our most memorable staycations and can't wait for our next one there."
