PB hotel design editorial

The white-painted colonial barracks that line Sentosa Island's former British military compound were built in the early twentieth century to house troops stationed at one of the Empire's most strategically prized outposts. Converted and opened in 2019, The Barracks Hotel Sentosa preserves the two-storey verandah buildings with careful restraint — terracotta-tiled pitched roofs, cross-braced timber balustrades, and colonnaded ground-floor arcades remain intact, the broad lawns fronting the facade kept clear in a way that honours the parade-ground geometry of the original garrison. The interiors, designed around a colonial explorer aesthetic, layer dark-stained timber panelling with brass fittings, studded leather campaign trunks, and director's chairs in the public spaces — a vocabulary that sits somewhere between a gentleman's club and a well-appointed expedition outfitter. Guest rooms carry exposed beam ceilings, walnut-toned wall cladding, and deep-soaking stone tubs visible through open bathroom thresholds, the overall atmosphere evoking a well-travelled officer's private quarters rather than a resort hotel room. Vintage travel photography framed in gilt borders and open wardrobes with carved timber grilles extend the narrative further. The pool courtyard, edged with black river pebbles and tropical plantings of heliconia and palm, runs alongside the original barracks wing, the juxtaposition of immaculate white Heritage architecture against lush equatorial greenery giving the property its most distinctive quality — a resort that carries the weight of history without being overwhelmed by it.

"We also stayed in the suites room for our mini-honeymoon and absolutely loved it! 🤩 The room was stunning, the decor and aesthetics were so beautiful and romantic, truly perfect for newlyweds. It was also incredibly spacious and comfortable, which was such a wonderful treat. The service was great too, we felt so well taken care of throughout our stay. If you’re thinking to stay here, I highly recommend it! 💕"

"This is a little gem of a hotel with the most lovely staff. From Gopal’s welcome on security, the wonderful Adikin who made us feel like royalty throughout our stay and every other member of staff in the lounge and on reception who couldn’t do enough for us. Thank you. They say it’s the little touches …. Free cocktails and canapés every evening, help completing Malaysia entry forms, super room service, a pack for our next stop in Sabah, drinks by the pool… So if you care to be a little removed from the city centre, relax and enjoy a break in this great city then The Barracks on Sentosa island is a great choice. A bus from about 100m away (123) runs in to the city and the Sentosa shuttle the same distance away gives to access to beaches, VivoCity with great shops, cinema and cheap eateries plus buses or MRT in to city for a couple of dollars. I would go on but I think you can feel the enthusiasm for this gem of a hotel."

"We arrived after a long flight from the UK and were instantly welcomed by the sweetest security guard. We were taken up to reception where we were checked in and given cold towels and a lovely refreshing drink. Our room 219 was lovely but my only criticism about the whole hotel was the lack of daylight in the room. There are no windows, just a frosted glass door which made me feel a little hemmed in but other than that, the room was comfortable and had all the amenities you would need including iron, coffee machine, kettle, hair dryer etc. For breakfast, you have to place your order the day before. It’s two courses with a good, healthy choice although I found the two courses too filling so it definitely sets you up for the day! What really makes the hotel stand out is the staff. They provide phenomenal service and really make you feel very welcome. I would highly recommend this hotel for couples if you want a quiet place to stay in a busy area."

"Had an amazing stay at The Barracks Hotel Sentosa. An immaculate hotel room featuring direct pool access & Jacuzzi. I really enjoyed the peace and serenity there paired with an exceptionally crafted ice americano. Don't miss out on the evening canapé! It was truly incredible. The breakfast was also memorable. What a perfect way to start the day. The experience would not had been perfect without the team's exceptional service. A huge thanks to Emily, Gabby, Jeffrey, Fatin, Vivien, JJ & Nizam. Highly recommended!"
