PB hotel design editorial

For seven decades before it received a single hotel guest, the building at the mouth of the Singapore River served as the General Post Office — a Palladian monument completed in 1928 to designs by Major P.H. Keys of the Public Works Department, its colonnaded granite facade carrying the civic authority of empire across the waterfront. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore opened within those walls in January 2001 after a meticulous conservation effort by RSP Architects, which preserved the monumental Doric columns, coffered ceilings, and the building's characteristic chamfered corner massing while threading 400 rooms across eight floors of what had been government offices and sorting halls. The interiors navigate a familiar colonial-revival tension — how much history to invoke, how much to suppress — and largely find a workable answer. Guestrooms are finished in warm taupe wovens, patterned carpets with restrained geometric borders, upholstered headboards set within panelled surrounds detailed in Art Deco-inflected mouldings, and dark mahogany case furniture that gestures toward the building's era without costuming itself as period reproduction. The pool terrace, carved into the building's river-facing plinth beneath a run of granite Corinthian columns, delivers one of Singapore's more architecturally charged outdoor spaces, the historic Cavenagh Bridge framing the western view. Inside the Chinese restaurant, silk lanterns descend through double-height volumes whose original coffered white plasterwork has been left largely intact, the ornamental contrast between colonial structure and Peranakan-inflected decorative detail quietly capturing what the city itself has always been.

"From the moment you walk through the doors, you’re treated like royalty and made to feel genuinely valued. The welcome from the staff set the tone for the entire stay who are warm, attentive, and nothing ever seemed too much trouble. We were delighted to receive a complimentary room upgrade, and the room itself was absolutely gorgeous. It felt like a real haven and was beautifully designed, comfortable, and the perfect place to relax. The pool area was stunning with a lovely view, and it was also great to have access to the additional pool at the harbour. While the main pool can get a little busy at times, it never felt overwhelming as people tend to come and go quite quickly. A lovely touch was the complimentary snacks served by the pool — such a thoughtful detail that really added to the experience. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice, and again the staff were exceptional and always friendly, attentive, and eager to help. The Concierge team were wonderful as well and added an extra special touch to the stay. Overall, it was a fantastic stay and somewhere we truly didn’t want to leave. We would happily return. It is so refreshing to stay at a hotel that truly encapsulated every essence of being a 5*. I wish I could rage higher!"

"My mum and I recently spent time at The Fullerton and had a very pleasant experience. The hotel itself is stunning, with beautiful architecture and a calm, elegant atmosphere that makes it a lovely place to relax in the heart of Singapore. What truly stood out during our visit was the level of hospitality from the staff. Raj Kumar Mohan(Asst Manager,Town Restaurant) was especially warm, attentive, and professional. From the moment we interacted with him, he made us feel welcomed and well looked after. His friendly manner and genuine care for guests left a very positive impression. It’s always the people who make a stay memorable, and Raj’s thoughtful service added a special touch to the experience. Thank you to Raj and the team for the wonderful hospitality"

"We came here 20 years ago and the hotel has remarkably Ned pretty much the same other than the new underpass starting in the centre of the reception area leading to the new Fullerton Hotel. It’s an iconic hotel. I loved it just as much as before. Its location is excellent."
