PB hotel design editorial

Designed by Kevin Roche — the Irish-American architect better known for the Ford Foundation Building in New York and the Oakland Museum of California — the tower rising above Marina Bay carries a facade articulated by a repeating grid of octagonal projections that give its white precast concrete skin an almost textile quality when seen from across the water. Completed in 1995, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore was conceived from the outset as a serious piece of architecture rather than a backdrop for hospitality, with Roche's 32-storey form oriented deliberately to maximize views over the bay toward what would eventually become one of the most transformed urban waterfronts in Asia. Inside, the hotel holds one of the largest privately assembled art collections in Southeast Asia — over 4,200 works including pieces by Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, and Dale Chihuly, whose characteristic blown-glass sculpture cascades from the vaulted ceiling of the Chihuly Lounge. The 608 rooms are finished in warm taupes and honey-toned timbers, floor-to-ceiling glazing framing the Esplanade and Marina Bay Sands skyline with an immediacy that makes the view feel like an architectural element in itself. The outdoor pool terrace, anchored by a scalloped timber-vaulted pavilion at its far end, brings the same calibrated sense of ceremony to a horizontal plane that Roche applied to the tower's vertical ambition.

"2 Nights in a Marina Bay Double. Large rooms and bathroom as expected. Amenities, linens, cleanliness etc all spot on. Luxury. Very comfortable bed too. The wood panels and general finish of the room are ageless and I find that reassuring. Great to have a desk to work from with that spectacular view and also a couch. In-Room dining 10/10 ( as expected ). Breakfast had so many choices and quality ingredients. Nice chat with Nadine too. Staff throughout added value to my stay. I thought the breakfast area had too many mirrors but that's just a personal observation. It may create the feeling of space but overpowering. The Pool was a memorable aspect of the stay. Plenty of space enclosed by trees and the blue colour scheme looked fantastic. Just perfect to idle away a few hours. I looked around the sauna and it has been designed with care and consideration. On another occasion I hope to return and enjoy. Thanks and best wishes to all for such a memorable stay. Hope to return soon."

"Perfect location and beautiful hotel . Check in was a disaster and I’m usually flexible but after 22 hours of travel it’s unacceptable. I was told 5 separate times about check in / check out policy and times . (5 times) as we arrived early I tried to check in but rooms weren’t ready which was fine . They said they would contact me . Fast forward to stated check in time that I was repeatedly reminded of rooms weren’t ready. After making a fuss they put 6 of us in 1 room exausted . When they called to say rooms were ready we had the luxury of carrying our own bags to new rooms . Not a big deal but when I brought it up to management I was given an apology and see ya! I thought it was odd as we were on way to ritz Koh Samui for 10 days and they couldn’t care less . I was actually told “we don’t participate in any programs or are affiliated with any other Ritz. It doesn’t mean they can participate in service and a bit of care . Went to four seasons , all is well !"

"My advice would be go somewhere else. I’ve always wanted to stay here but was underwhelmed. We booked a twin room with marina bay view , open arrival was told the requested room type wasn’t available and would I be ok with a king bed and sofa bed. At over $1k AUD per night I don’t think so! Initial room was on a low floor, looking out at construction, smelled bad. In fairness we did get moved and the team wrapped around to provide me some champagne and cake for my birthday which was lovely. Room was dated ++ Umbrellas at pool wee ripped and loungers all marked. Huge queue for breakfast We won’t be back"
