PB hotel design editorial

Horizontal timber louvres wrapping a low-rise tower on Cuscaden Road set the Singapore EDITION apart from the glass-and-steel vertical ambition that dominates the Orchard corridor — a deliberate act of material restraint in a district that rarely practices it. The building, designed by WATG with interiors by Ian Schrager's in-house team working alongside local collaborators, opened in 2021 with 190 rooms across a structure whose banded facade filters equatorial light into the guest rooms rather than surrendering to it. From inside, those louvres frame the surrounding canopy in horizontal strips, lending each room the quality of a curated landscape painting rather than a panoramic urban view. The interiors hold to the bone-white and pale ash palette that has become a signature of the EDITION brand — bleached oak flooring, upholstered headboards in natural linen, brass drum side tables providing the only warmth against an otherwise cool register. The restaurant downstairs breaks entirely from that restraint: tropical palms press against full-height glazing, mustard velvet chairs surround marble-topped tables beneath a sculpted plaster ceiling, and a tapestry anchors the back wall in a room that feels closer to a conservatory overtaken by the jungle outside than a conventional hotel dining space. The outdoor pool terrace, sunk into a mid-rise courtyard and lined with teak yoga platforms, gives the property a groundedness that its Orchard Road address might otherwise preclude.

About

Positioned along Orchard Road, Singapore's premier shopping and entertainment district, The Singapore EDITION is nestled on a tranquil side street, offering a serene, high-end enclave just moments from the city's energy. Beyond its 204 guestrooms and suites, the hotel is defined by its lifestyle-driven spaces: a signature restaurant and four distinctive bars, each with its own personality. The Lobby Bar serves as the hotel's beating heart, anchored by a rose-hued pool table and pink backlit bar where social life unfolds naturally. Punch Room Singapore, a speakeasy-style bar draped in Yves Klein blue, serves punch cocktails infused with local herbs and spices. The ROOF brings a tropical resort sensibility to the rooftop level, complete with slushie cocktails, a light summer menu and a 43-metre pool with an oculus overlooking the secret garden below. "A lovely bar to have high tea. Unlike high teas at other hotels, the ambiance is elegant and quiet. Love the crystal bar feature wall. A special thanks to Ruben who made my daughter and I felt right at home."

"Tucked away in the heart of Orchard Road’s bustle in Singapore, The Singapore EDITION stands quietly in an understated manner. As the brand’s first property in Southeast Asia, it draws inspiration from the concept of a tropical utopia, using pure white as its main tone, greenery as its breathing rhythm, and flowing light and shadow as its most touching language to reinterpret the spatial aesthetics of an urban oasis and spiritual relaxation. Since its opening in 2023, despite its pivotal position within the group, it has maintained a low-key and restrained demeanor, free of grand archways and extravagant lobbies. Its modern, minimalist streamlined exterior seamlessly integrates innovation, functionality, and aesthetics, exuding a timeless and sophisticated charm. The hotel’s interior is personally overseen by Ian Schrager, the founder and father of boutique hotels, in collaboration with Hong Kong-based Cap Atelier. The architecture, on the other hand, is a joint creation by Moshe Safdie and Singapore’s DP Architects. Stepping into the lobby, greenery greets the eye as the visual backdrop, a subtle metaphor for Singapore’s Garden City spirit. The gilded dome contrasts dramatically with the pure white marble floor below, while a winding Venetian plaster spiral staircase leads down to the garden courtyard level. The lobby is divided into several small, fluid yet independent spaces, allowing guests to find a comfortable nook for a quick rest, private conversation, or relaxed wait before check-in. The welcome drink offered at the front desk instantly immerses guests in The EDITION’s unique laid-back rhythm. More than 300 species of Southeast Asian tropical vegetation and 162 floating fern balls are the soul of the hotel, enhancing the atmosphere of an urban secret sanctuary. Next to it, the Limited EDITION boutique offers exclusive merchandise and Le Labo’s custom-blended fragrance for guests to take home. The hotel is connected to Boulevard 88, its twin residential tower, sharing gardens and amenities. A sliding curtain wall system allows guests to independently adjust the privacy and openness of their rooms, balancing comfort and flexibility. The hotel features a total of 204 guest rooms, suites, and apartments, with basic rooms starting from 38 square meters and the main Garden Rooms ranging from 38 to 47 square meters. Custom white oak flooring and light wood veneer set a simple and elegant tone, while the lightweight white satin bedspread complements the hotel’s tropical resort style. Each room is equipped with an adjustable curtain wall system, and the welcome gift includes fragrant pandan donuts. The minibar and wardrobe are seamlessly hidden behind white walls to maintain visual purity. While beverages and snacks in the minibar are chargeable, they offer a rich selection tailored to the preferences of younger generations. In practice of sustainability, the hotel uses Tetra Pak packaging for mineral water to reduce single-use plastic. The bathroom is equipped with a Washlet smart toilet and a minimalist control panel integrating a showerhead, rain shower, and bathtub faucet, with Le Labo’s custom toiletries being a beloved detail among guests. Located on the second floor, The Spa is a serene haven for relaxation, featuring 7 treatment rooms, a sunken vitality pool, ice fountain, lounge, sauna, and steam room, along with a fully equipped fitness center, forming a complete wellness loop. The Fitness Center, echoing the spa area, uses warm wood veneer extensively to create an energetic atmosphere, with a full range of equipment to meet guests’ needs for cardio and strength training. The hotel’s five restaurants and bars each offer a unique experience: FYSH at EDITION, an all-day dining restaurant, wakes up the morning with a semi-buffet breakfast, featuring cold cuts, smoked salmon, delicate pastries, fresh fruit salads, and various dairy products, along with an a la carte menu that blends classic Western egg dishes with local Singaporean flavors such as rich laksa broth and fragrant chicken nasi lemak. The Lobby Bar, adjacent to the all-day dining area, is the hotel’s most popular spot, with a pink velvet interior, a glowing pink backlit bar, and Lalique crystal bottles and sculptures adding a touch of elegance. A rose marble billiard table adds a playful touch, while Liaigre-designed suede chairs and artistic lighting create The EDITION’s signature ambiance, bright and lively for afternoon tea by day, and soft and dreamy by night, encouraging guests to unwind. The cocktails, with names like Out of Office, After Hours, and Matcha Muse, are accompanied by exceptional bar snacks, such as creamy sea urchin muffins and tender beef tartare, making it easy to spend an entire evening here. Not every EDITION hotel has a Punch Room, which makes it a special highlight of the Singapore property. Tucked beneath the spiral staircase, it resembles a deep indigo lake. Traditional punch is a classic cocktail made with five ingredients: spirits, sugar, lemon, water, and tea/spices. At The Singapore EDITION, the recipe is reimagined with local spices and tropical fruits, creating unique flavors that embody Singapore. Each cocktail tells a story, such as Kusu Island Punch, a gin-based drink infused with lemongrass and Japanese roasted hojicha, served in a tea bowl, which narrates the ancient legend of the sea turtles on Kusu Island saving Singapore’s indigenous people. In entertainment-focused Singapore, The EDITION also hides a more exclusive nightspot Wonder Room, which comes alive only on Friday nights and has become a new trendy after-hours destination. The space features warm yellow and deep red tones, with hanging red curtains creating a theatrical atmosphere, and a yellow billiard table shining under the lights as the focal point. Regular themed events and immersive cultural experiences make each visit an adventure. Some have mistakenly compared The EDITION to a fancier budget hotel, which misinterprets its design philosophy. Ian Schrager’s minimalism is not simplicity or sparseness, but precise restraint that eliminates redundancy. The Singapore EDITION blends classical lines with warm materials to create a layered spatial texture, balancing trendy culture and luxurious elegance. From the light-filled public areas and guest rooms to the sky-high floating pool and tropical rooftop bar, every detail reflects the brand’s meticulous grasp of vacation ambiance and commitment to sustainability. This understated luxury is far beyond the reach of standardized business hotels. More than just a place to stay, it is a carefully crafted urban guide, inviting guests to savor every moment."
