PB hotel design editorial

Singapore's Orchard corridor has always traded in a certain kind of aspirational cool, but Ministry of Design's interiors for The Standard, Singapore push the city's hospitality language somewhere more layered and genuinely surprising. The eight-storey, 143-room property, designed by DP Architects and completed in 2024 at 12 Orange Grove Road, presents a full-height glass facade that mirrors the surrounding canopy of palms and rain trees — the building doesn't assert itself so much as absorb its tropical context, letting the greenery read as architecture. Inside, the two distinct registers Ministry of Design has established are what make the property worth understanding. The guestrooms are calm and precise: slatted timber canopies float above beds on black steel frames, terrazzo-topped tables anchor the window zones, and those signature capsule wall sconces in deep burgundy and amber hold a warmth that keeps the minimalism from going cold. The restaurant moves into an entirely different atmosphere — channelled-leather banquettes in burnt caramel, herringbone timber floors, floral murals crawling up the walls, and a ceiling dense with trailing vines and globe pendants that tips close to the mood of a Seventies São Paulo supper club. Outdoors, a flower-draped pergola frames the pool bar, greenery cascading from every beam. The property's bespoke terrarium reception counter, housing an installation by Eric Tobua, confirms the intention throughout: tropical Singapore, refracted through a design lens with real editorial confidence.

"We loved our 4 night stay at The Standard, it has the most relaxing vibe, calming gardens and a large pool with swim up bar. The staff couldn’t be more friendly and helpful. Thank you Wu Wu and Yatkeck for making breakfast experience such a joy in the morning."

"I’m very disappointed with my experience with this hotel’s reservation policy and the lack of flexibility shown in a genuine medical emergency. I had booked two rooms through Agoda for a stay from 10–13 March 2026. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with Dengue fever on 8 March, which made it medically impossible for me to travel. I had even provided a medical certificate and my hospital's clinical report confirming the diagnosis. I understand that my booking was under a non-cancellable rate, and I was not asking for a refund or cancellation. I simply requested to postpone the stay to similar weekday stays for similar amount of nights, keeping the same number of rooms. I also made it clear that I was willing to top up any difference in room rates for the new dates. Agoda contacted the hotel on my behalf, and I also reached out directly. Despite explaining the situation and having already provided medical documentation multiple times, the hotel refused to allow any amendment whatsoever. To make things worse, the hotel did not even bother to communicate directly with me after requesting me to go back to the third-party platform which I have clearly informed them that I have done so. What made this even more disappointing is that I have previously stayed at this hotel twice under my name and had good experiences, which is why I chose to book here again. I had hoped that in a genuine medical situation the hotel might show some goodwill or flexibility, especially since I still intended to stay and was willing to pay any rate difference. Instead, the response was silence which implies a firm refusal. Future guests should be aware that even with a documented medical emergency, and even when only requesting a date change (not a refund), the hotel may not provide any flexibility at all. Very disappointing experience."

"A very stylish modern instagramable hotel in the heart of Orange Grove Road Singapore. Love the simply aesthetic design of the hotel, stylish swimming pool and funky room itself. Comfortable room for good sleep and good food and beverages served at Kaya Restaurant & Pool Bar. Thank you so much Kaya Restaurant team (Ms Kei, Ms Mini, Mr Lim), Reception team (Ms Tris, Ms Irene Cheng, Ms Dede), Ms Amy Lu for future building works notice, Mr Syam & Mr Mahmud for helping me with safety deposit box, Mr Au from Pool Bar, and to all The Standard Singapore staffs for great services and hospitality."

"It’s fine. Decent property but the details are missing. Super junior inexperienced staff, tiny ass rooms, misinformation (we asked for a yoga mat and were informed that if we wanted to work out we could only go to a local gym and pay on our own terms. Then found a workout area on property with decent facilities and yoga mats. This is crazy. The staff didn’t even know about their own facilities). There was also a poop in the pool which the staff ignored and when we brought it up they just said it was a leaf and that was it. My impression from now on is The Standard Singapore, poop I the pool"
