PB hotel design editorial

Singapore's Orchard corridor has always traded in a certain kind of aspirational cool, but Ministry of Design's interiors for The Standard, Singapore push the city's hospitality language somewhere more layered and genuinely surprising. The eight-storey, 143-room property, designed by DP Architects and completed in 2024 at 12 Orange Grove Road, presents a full-height glass facade that mirrors the surrounding canopy of palms and rain trees — the building doesn't assert itself so much as absorb its tropical context, letting the greenery read as architecture. Inside, the two distinct registers Ministry of Design has established are what make the property worth understanding. The guestrooms are calm and precise: slatted timber canopies float above beds on black steel frames, terrazzo-topped tables anchor the window zones, and those signature capsule wall sconces in deep burgundy and amber hold a warmth that keeps the minimalism from going cold. The restaurant moves into an entirely different atmosphere — channelled-leather banquettes in burnt caramel, herringbone timber floors, floral murals crawling up the walls, and a ceiling dense with trailing vines and globe pendants that tips close to the mood of a Seventies São Paulo supper club. Outdoors, a flower-draped pergola frames the pool bar, greenery cascading from every beam. The property's bespoke terrarium reception counter, housing an installation by Eric Tobua, confirms the intention throughout: tropical Singapore, refracted through a design lens with real editorial confidence.

"A lovely boutique hotel where the staff really make a difference. The front office and concierge were always welcoming and smiling. Special mention to the restaurant staff including Gary, SuSu, Tom and Charlie. During the week long stay we became regulars at breakfast and afternoon cocktails. The room was small but nicely appointed. The housekeeping crew kept us clean and stocked daily. We booked through Luxury Escapes whose service was fantastic. The inclusions were great value. And as for Singapore, what a jewel. We will be back."

"We were greeted by The Standard Singapore Hotel’s doorman/porter. He was very helpful with our bags and brought them up to our room. He also served us welcome drinks which added a nice touch to our stay. The wait at check-in wasn’t very long so we were directed to the lobby cafe/bar area to sit. The front agent greeted us and checked us in swiftly. We used our Hyatt points for our stay and they asked if we would like to add the breakfast package for only 19SGD per person per night which was an incredible offer, normally it’s 42SGD if you were to walk into their restaurant to pay on the spot or do a room charge. Our guestroom was pretty sweet with a nice view of the front facing street. The room was so clean. The color scheme screams out “young” and “fun” keeping its theme standard (no pun intended). The bathroom could do with more hooks to hang bath towels, there was only one hook available for one bath towel only. If two guests stay, the other person will have to use the hook just outside the bathroom where clothes are hung (no traditional closed wardrobe) where you’re given a couple of hangers to use (two hooks spaced apart with three hangers on each hook). There is more storage/drawer space at the base of the bed where the mattress sits on by pulling it out. I love how there’s a comfy couch between the twin beds, talk about space saving! There’s a rain shower and a hand held shower with amazing water pressure. Good amount of counter space to place your bathroom necessities as well as on the wood shelf. There were two extra hooks which I found were oddly placed near the floor to ceiling windows. There were also these brown leather storage bags nailed to the wall below where you hang your clothes and I had no idea what you would put in them? A Nespresso machine was available for guests use as well as a kettle to make your TWG teas (provided). Very thoughtful and high quality amenities to make our stay enjoyable. Loved the pale pink bathrobes for guests to use, the armhole design is unique and clever. Spent half a day at poolside which was very relaxing laying on the double loungers underneath the pretty flamingo pink umbrellas. I don’t know how the umbrellas are kept so clean! Well done to the amazing staff on the upkeep of the pool area and umbrellas. The temperature of the pool was perfect, not too cold at all. Very well maintained with leaves removed and deck swept. More loungers were available away from the pool area as well as a big hammock to sway in (that was fun). Lots of nice seating scattered all over the property which was very instagramable. The gym is nearby and it’s all outdoors which is nice for a change from working out in gyms indoors. It’s a very small space to work out in with only a limited amount of equipment, there’s no treadmill but an elliptical instead. There’s ice cold jug of water flavored with cucumber slices and lemon I think. The hotel’s location is about a 10 minute walk to the well known Orchard Road and it was so nice to know the Standard Hotel Singapore has a complimentary shuttle to take you to the Shaw Center and ION Mall. Both are great to get off at to look and browse around. Yes, you can catch the MRT from the ION Mall to take you further out. Bear in mind the shuttle can only seat a limited number of guests so line up early at the hotel front to get a seat. Some guests had to be turned away because there weren’t enough seats available. We truly enjoyed our short stay at The Standard Singapore. It’s only a year and a half new. So modern and stylish with a bit of whimsy. The staff are very welcoming and really enjoy conversing with guests. The doorman/porter was very helpful with all the information we needed to know, he directed me which way to go cause I would not have known. He loaded our luggage to the car and was very engaging in conversations. All the front desk agent workers were very helpful and eager to please and just wanted to make sure we all had a pleasant stay."

"From the moment we arrived, the staff were exceptionally warm, friendly and helpful and truly looked after us, without ever being intrusive. The accommodation itself was gorgeous - we felt comfortable, in the contemporary rooms which had everything we needed. But perhaps the highlight of the whole experience were the tropical terraced gardens, with little hidden nooks where you could have a coffee or a drink. A great location - a little away from the hubub of Orchard Rd - we would never stay anywhere else in Singapore."

"We had booked the room 2 months in advance, we have been world of hyatt members since over 3 years now. The only request we had made was to get a king bed instead of twin. I followed up with them about the same 2 day prior to check in also since it was our anniversary trip. Both the times I got the same response saying the hotel is sold out, while I could still see online there were plenty of rooms available. Even during check in we asked them to see if they can do something about the twin room but they did not. We spent 3 nights of our anniversay trip sleeping on seperate beds."

"The location was very convenient to Orchard Road. less than 8 minute walk. The hotel itself was clean and welcoming. the rooms were also clean and well kept. Noise level was a little loud in the lobby at sun down (had a DJ) which made it a little unpleasant to wait for other guests/people in the lobby. The service was very good and each team member was focused on providing the best services for their guests."
