PB hotel design editorial

Singapore's Orchard corridor has always traded in a certain kind of aspirational cool, but Ministry of Design's interiors for The Standard, Singapore push the city's hospitality language somewhere more layered and genuinely surprising. The eight-storey, 143-room property, designed by DP Architects and completed in 2024 at 12 Orange Grove Road, presents a full-height glass facade that mirrors the surrounding canopy of palms and rain trees — the building doesn't assert itself so much as absorb its tropical context, letting the greenery read as architecture. Inside, the two distinct registers Ministry of Design has established are what make the property worth understanding. The guestrooms are calm and precise: slatted timber canopies float above beds on black steel frames, terrazzo-topped tables anchor the window zones, and those signature capsule wall sconces in deep burgundy and amber hold a warmth that keeps the minimalism from going cold. The restaurant moves into an entirely different atmosphere — channelled-leather banquettes in burnt caramel, herringbone timber floors, floral murals crawling up the walls, and a ceiling dense with trailing vines and globe pendants that tips close to the mood of a Seventies São Paulo supper club. Outdoors, a flower-draped pergola frames the pool bar, greenery cascading from every beam. The property's bespoke terrarium reception counter, housing an installation by Eric Tobua, confirms the intention throughout: tropical Singapore, refracted through a design lens with real editorial confidence.

"Though it’s a boutique-sized property, it’s filled with beautiful photo spots. If you’re looking to enjoy Orchard Road, this is definitely a place worth considering."

"I loved my stay at The Standard and would stay here again without hesitation. Really appreciated the early check in and my corner room was great, with genuine floor to ceiling windows on two sides. Loved the shower too but found the sink rather small (and no bathtub). I also appreciated the attempts to reduce the use of plastic - a problem elsewhere in Singapore. Breakfast was interesting, ordered ‘à la minute” (sometimes literally!) from the menu. Each dish is fairly small so you can sample a few. Particularly enjoyed the laksa and eggs florentine. I also liked that staff came round offering a ‘daily special’ for people to try. Nice touch! The shuttle bus to Orchard is useful if it’s hot or raining and runs regularly throughout the day. The Botanic Gardens are a 15 minute walk away. Some may want to be closer to the action though. There’s no lobby to speak of, which is a bit weird, and you have to pass the front desk each time you go to the lifts (of which there are only two). That said, they never seemed too busy. All in all an enjoyable and comfortable stay at a beautifully designed property. Thanks, The Standard Singapore!"

"My husband and I stayed for a week recently at the fairly new The Standard Hotel (SG), and we were wowed by the hotel’s iconic design and facilities, its delectable food and beverage offerings, and the warm and friendly guest service, all of which surpassed our expectations. We were warmly welcomed on arrival and helped with our bags by duty manager Zia Shariffudin. Check-in was smooth and we even received a welcome drink and cold towels to ease the sweltering outdoor heat. Our room was ready on arrival and the amenities that we had requested for beforehand were duly delivered. We were also very happy with the beautiful welcome basket of drinks and snacks. Our guest room was comfortable, clean, functional and had a modern and luxurious vibe. The breakfast crew at the Kaya restaurant were warm and friendly, and service was fast and efficient even on busy days. We enjoyed the à la carte buffet offerings, especially the laksa, chicken curry and banana French toast. The hotel is a short drive from the main shopping belt in Orchard Road and there is easy access to the MRT and nearby restaurants and malls. We found the hotel shuttle service very useful. It operates every 20 minutes interval and is always on time even with the unpredictable traffic conditions which I found amazing. In summary, our long stay at The Standard Hotel was a stellar experience and we are already planning our next visit. We are especially grateful to Zia and his colleagues for treating us like VIPs. I did not get the names of everyone who was kind to us, but thank you Kelvin, Shukri, Kaye, Shannen, Jarren, Thiva, Tom, Linn, Milu, Dalila, Aghi, and Zhou for your hospitality."
