PB hotel design editorial

Singapore's Orchard corridor has always traded in a certain kind of aspirational cool, but Ministry of Design's interiors for The Standard, Singapore push the city's hospitality language somewhere more layered and genuinely surprising. The eight-storey, 143-room property, designed by DP Architects and completed in 2024 at 12 Orange Grove Road, presents a full-height glass facade that mirrors the surrounding canopy of palms and rain trees — the building doesn't assert itself so much as absorb its tropical context, letting the greenery read as architecture. Inside, the two distinct registers Ministry of Design has established are what make the property worth understanding. The guestrooms are calm and precise: slatted timber canopies float above beds on black steel frames, terrazzo-topped tables anchor the window zones, and those signature capsule wall sconces in deep burgundy and amber hold a warmth that keeps the minimalism from going cold. The restaurant moves into an entirely different atmosphere — channelled-leather banquettes in burnt caramel, herringbone timber floors, floral murals crawling up the walls, and a ceiling dense with trailing vines and globe pendants that tips close to the mood of a Seventies São Paulo supper club. Outdoors, a flower-draped pergola frames the pool bar, greenery cascading from every beam. The property's bespoke terrarium reception counter, housing an installation by Eric Tobua, confirms the intention throughout: tropical Singapore, refracted through a design lens with real editorial confidence.

"This was our first Standard hotel experience and I can say that we liked the quirky lifestyle vibe and character of the property and staff. You can tell that the hotel is still very new. At the time of writing this it's a little over a year old. It feels clean, modern, and stylish. I like the relaxed boutique feel of the property and staff. There are lot of musical elements and photo opportunities throughout that add to the charm. Our room was a Deluxe King Pool view. Not only did it have a nice view of the pool, but we could also see the hotel's garden, sculptures, and many of the skyscrapers that adorn the skyline of Singapore. I was a fan of the natural light that came through the tinted floor to ceiling windows, and the bluetooth speaker on the nightstand. The layout of the room is an efficient and functional use of the space. From the safe under the bed, to the closet storage with sliding door that provides access to a mirror when closed, and drawers and hangers when opened. My wife and I were both fans of the bathroom design colors and the water closet. In addition, my wife loved the size of the bath towels. We were comfortable during our three nights there. We enjoyed having breakfast and dinner at Kaya. The restaurant has a nice ambiance and attentive staff. I appreciate Nicky for suggesting the Udon Laksa on the first morning. Even though we had an à la carte buffet, it became my favorite selection for breakfast amongst many delicious dishes. The decor and music was always pleasant and enhanced the vibe in the morning and for the night we had dinner there. I would like to also thank the front desk staff for executing my request of having a note for my wife. Although it was not in our room upon arrival, I appreciate the communication and delivery of it along with a welcome note for me, and flowers for my wife. Receiving those things in addition to some sweet and savory snacks was a good gesture and complimented the service experience of hotel. Special thanks to Edwina for meeting me and providing me with a tour of the property, and sharing some of the highlights of some of their suites and rooms. I appreciated our chat and the efforts of her and the staff for making us feel welcomed and comfortable during our stay. If this Singapore Standard hotel location is indicative of the The Standard, then I look forward to returning here and trying other locations in the future. Thanks to Kevin, Nicky, Zhen Yang and all of the staff that made our stay special. If I missed your name, that doesn't mean I don't miss how you made us feel at the Standard."

"A quirky and fun theme—perfect for a staycation to decompress from work. Overall, it was a great experience. I appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as the pillow selection and the in-room clothes steamer; it’s the little details that make a difference. The room could benefit from better soundproofing, as some noise was noticeable. Likewise, coffee machine was not descaled - a little disappointed in that as we wanted to try the singapore flavoured capsules. That said, guest services and in-room dining were excellent—both prompt and professional. The food at Kaya and Café Standard was also very enjoyable."
