PB hotel design editorial

Carved from one of Bucharest's most storied financial monuments, the former Marmorosch Blank & Co bank — completed in 1923 to designs inflected with Viennese Secession and Beaux-Arts influences — the Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection opened in 2021 after a meticulous restoration that preserved the building's elaborately rusticated limestone facade, Moorish-arched entrance portal, and extraordinary interior banking hall. That hall is now the hotel's most arresting space: a double-height vault room where original brass-fronted safe deposit boxes line the walls floor to ceiling, wrought-iron balustrades trace the mezzanine gallery, and a darkly glamorous cocktail bar sits at the centre beneath a circular chandelier — the whole effect closer to a fin-de-siècle film set than a hotel amenity. The 63 guestrooms navigate the tension between the building's ceremonial weight and contemporary comfort with considerable ease. Rooms in the original structure retain herringbone oak parquet, tall arched windows, and generous ceiling heights, furnished with linen-upholstered headboards, dark marble writing desks, and globe pendant lights that echo the bar below. The darker category rooms shift to charcoal panel mouldings, deep navy velvet headboards, and bold contemporary photography — a red velvet armchair providing deliberate contrast. The restaurant deploys a saturated slate-blue palette, tufted dining chairs in cobalt velvet arranged around a circular custom rug, coffered white ceilings keeping the room from tipping into heaviness. Throughout, the design team treated the building's banking past not as backdrop but as the primary material.

"We had a wonderful stay at the The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection and were truly impressed by the entire experience. Elena was very kind at the reception. We stayed in a Platinum Suite, which was absolutely stunning – very spacious, beautifully designed, and perfectly combining the historic character of the building with modern comfort. The suite was elegant, quiet, and offered a very luxurious atmosphere that made our stay in Bucharest even more special. The hotel itself is simply magnificent. The architecture and interior design reflect the history of the former bank building while offering all the comfort of a modern luxury hotel. Every detail in the lobby, corridors, and rooms feels carefully curated. Service was also excellent. The team at the reception was welcoming, professional, and attentive throughout our stay. The overall atmosphere of the hotel is sophisticated yet very warm and inviting. The location is another big highlight – perfectly situated in the historic center of Bucharest, within walking distance to many beautiful streets, restaurants, and attractions. We would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Bucharest and looking for a unique luxury experience in a historic setting. We are already looking forward to coming back."

"We recently spent five nights at The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection, and from the moment we arrived, it felt special, especially as we were celebrating my birthday during our stay. The building itself is breathtaking, a stunning blend of historic grandeur and modern boutique luxury. The location is unbeatable. We were just steps from Old Town Bucharest, surrounded by incredible restaurants, bars and culture. We could stroll to Grand Café Van Gogh within minutes, and the iconic Caru’ cu Bere was practically around the corner. For a stylish city break with children, you truly couldn’t ask for a better base. Before our arrival, I corresponded via email with Alexander, who was absolutely fantastic. She was warm, efficient, and incredibly helpful in ensuring everything was arranged perfectly ahead of time. It’s always reassuring when the five-star service begins before you’ve even stepped inside the hotel. Check-in was seamless and welcoming. The team were polished yet friendly, and the bellman assisted with our luggage immediately. At check-in, my daughters were gifted the sweetest teddy bears, which completely made their day, such a thoughtful, family-focused touch. As we were celebrating my birthday, the hotel also surprised us with complimentary cake and champagne, which was such a beautiful gesture. It made the occasion feel even more special and genuinely appreciated. We were very kindly upgraded to the Platinum Suite and it was stunning. Spacious, elegant, and full of personality. I loved the quirky artwork throughout the room and hotel; it gives the property a distinctive character that sets it apart from more generic luxury chains. If I’m being completely honest, the only small drawback was storage. The wardrobe space was quite limited for a family of four staying five nights, so we mostly lived out of our suitcases. It didn’t detract from our overall experience, but for a longer stay or a girls’ trip with multiple outfit changes, it may feel restrictive. The room amenities were excellent, iron and board, kettle, coffee and tea facilities, minibar, and daily replenished water. The large walk-in shower was fantastic (no bathtub), and the White Company toiletries added that elevated touch. Fluffy robes and slippers are non-negotiable for me, so I was pleased they were ready in the room and children’s robes were provided on request, which I really appreciated. Being able to access Netflix and YouTube via the TV made cosy movie nights easy and kept the girls entertained between exploring the city. The spa is intimate rather than expansive, a pool, loungers, steam room and sauna, but perfect for a relaxing hour. I booked massages during our stay, and the treatments were wonderful, a little moment of calm during a busy birthday city break. The Vault bar looked stunning and atmospheric, somewhere I’d absolutely enjoy on a couples’ trip, but travelling with children meant we didn’t experience it this time. Breakfast was exactly what you hope for in a five-star hotel: generous buffet options alongside a menu you can order from directly to your table. We also ordered room service one evening and were genuinely impressed by how quickly it arrived, much faster than the typical 30+ minute wait you expect elsewhere. Overall, The Marmorosch delivers character, warmth, and refined luxury in one of the best locations in Bucharest. It manages to feel sophisticated yet genuinely welcoming to families, a rare balance and we wouldn’t hesitate to return."

"As part of our AMA Waterways end of cruise excursion, we were booked at The Marmorosch (Marriott) for a couple of days which we extended to a third. The hotel lobby itself is breathtaking and contains a couple of bars. Our hang out at the end of our days was at the bar serviced by Robin. His drinks were delicious and aesthetically pleasing this hotel also provides a delicious brunch buffet providing a variety of meats, breads, an omelette station, and even mimosas. Our hotel room was comfortable, clean and serviced each day. Staff was very friendly and helpful. This was our first day in Bucharest and I suspect it will not be our last. We most likely will stay here."
