PB hotel design editorial

Against the snow-capped ridge of the Bucegi Mountains, a whitewashed manor in the Wallachian vernacular tradition rises from the Șimon valley floor with the unhurried confidence of a building that has always belonged exactly where it sits — though Matca Hotel opened only in 2021, built from the ground up to embody a quietly radical proposition: that Romanian rural architecture, properly understood and faithfully rendered, needs nothing borrowed from the Alpine or Scandinavian playbooks that dominate mountain hospitality across Europe. The main building's hipped roof, ochre-trimmed arched arcades, and central timber belvedere draw directly from the boieresc manor house typology of pre-modern Muntenia, and the surrounding cluster of subsidiary structures extends that vocabulary without repeating it mechanically. Inside, the design sustains the same argument through material rather than gesture — exposed oak roof trusses left rough-hewn in the attic rooms, wide-plank oak floors throughout, headboards carrying hand-embroidered floral motifs drawn from traditional Romanian textile craft, and chunky hand-knitted wool throws folded at the foot of each bed. The restaurant cuts against the heritage register, its floor-to-ceiling glazing framing the Carpathian valley in a long unbroken panorama beneath a clean-lined timber ceiling hung with oversized ceramic cowbell pendants. The spa completes the sequence in warm travertine and tadelakt-finished plaster, rattan lounge chairs arranged before another full-width mountain view — a property that keeps returning to the landscape as its primary material.

"Amazing location with a breathtaking mountain views, but the road to the venue is very rocky. The frontdesk and restaurant employees are very well trained. Limited food options in the meniu, the service would be excellent if you wouldn't wait 25 minutes for a soup. The SPA is ok,I would give 3*. My humble opinion is that the price is overrated, but it is worth a visit once."

"I had one of the most beautiful stays I’ve ever experienced. The place is absolutely stunning – you can literally hear the silence up there, and the views are simply breathtaking. The staff always welcomes you with a smile, and the food is delicious, whether it’s room service, breakfast, or dinner. The spa area exceeded my expectations – several cold-water pools, jacuzzi, dry and steam saunas – a true relaxation ritual. A big plus was finding a charging station for electric cars, such a thoughtful detail. This is the kind of place with an incredible vibe that helps you truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Highly recommended!"

"Villas and food must be perfect at this price level. Villas are exceptional but my personal experience with food was 1 star. No morning pastry, only Greek yogurt which I don't like, No option for gluten free bread, no option for lactose free almond milk and my biggest disappointment was my expectation for honey based on their name of "matca" which symbolizes a a hive of bees. In every 5* hotel I have been, there was available honeycomb. I was expecting to eat several honeycombs, at least to taste in the morning, the versions that they have for sale. Honey available is the worst I have had in my entire life. Dinner desert was fancy looking with a homemade absolutely not creamy with no flavor ice cream."

"My family and I (wife and two children) recently stayed in one of the villas, and we were immediately struck by the absolutely breathtaking views. The location is truly spectacular. The hotel itself is beautiful, with a very stylish restaurant and an impressive-looking spa. We had dinner at the restaurant and the food was delicious, and a special mention must go to the staff at the restaurant and bar who were all incredibly welcoming, professional, and attentive. However, considering the premium price point of the villa, we were disappointed by several issues that significantly impacted our comfort, particularly when it came to getting a good night's sleep. First, the master bedroom unfortunately does not have its own air conditioning unit. The only AC is in the living area where our children were sleeping on the sofa bed, which meant we couldn't cool our bedroom during the night without disturbing them. This was made more challenging by two other factors. The blackout curtains were not properly sized for the windows, allowing a significant amount of light in, especially as our villa faced the sunset, meaning the room was bright from around 4 AM onwards. Additionally, the bathroom was fitted with an extremely bright motion-activated light. While practical during the day, any use of the toilet at night would flood the space with intense light, making it very difficult to get back to sleep. Another area of disappointment was the spa. While the facilities look wonderful, they didn't deliver on their promise. The dry sauna was advertised as being 85-90°C, but the thermomether showed 70°C and it felt even colder. The wet sauna was similarly underheated. Furthermore, there was no water provided in the dry sauna for steam, which is a basic expectation. In summary, while the hotel has a world-class location, stunning views, and excellent restaurant staff, the fundamental aspects of a luxury stay—a comfortable night's sleep and functional spa amenities—fell very short of expectations."
