PB hotel design editorial

Long Bay on Saint Martin's French side has drawn a particular kind of traveller since 1974, when American entrepreneur James Frankel carved a private Mediterranean fantasy from a headland overlooking one of the Caribbean's most consistently celebrated stretches of white sand. La Samanna, now part of the Belmond collection, was conceived less as a resort than as a personal villa compound scaled up — low-slung whitewashed structures with terracotta roof tiles, Moorish arches, and louvered mahogany shutters arranged along the bluff in a way that keeps the turquoise water in almost constant view. The 83-room property spreads across grounds dense with palms and tropical vegetation, its architecture sitting closer to a Greek island village than to any conventional hotel typology. A recent refresh sharpened the interiors considerably, drawing the palette toward the sea itself — teal throws across white linen bedding, indigo ikat cushions, woven rattan furniture, and large-format limestone floor tiles that keep the rooms cool and airy. Arched doorways open directly onto terraces where the Caribbean sits just past the balustrade, the transition between inside and outside handled with a looseness that feels genuinely residential. The beach restaurant visible in the images layers coral-printed scatter cushions, rope pendant lights, and scallop-edged parasols in terracotta against a teak deck, achieving a sun-bleached glamour that suits the island's Franco-Caribbean sensibility. The pool terrace, lined in aqua-striped umbrellas and oversized white planters, completes the picture with a composed, unhurried ease.

"We loved our time at La Samanna, and there is no better beach on the island to spend your days soaking up the sun and swimming. Our room was lovely and steps away from the beachfront. The staff is delightful. Overall, highly recommended."

"This was our third time visiting La Samanna and each time we leave feeling incredibly relaxed, rejuvinated and blessed to have gotten time on the island and at the resort. La Samanna is truly a gem of a location with a sprawling pristine beach. The restaurants on property are incredible and range from classic beach club italian to upscale french. The overlook at the lobby bar is world class. The staff is very attentive and they truly go out of their way to make the stay memorable and comfortable."

"While at la semanna, they failed to tag one of our bags. This led to the bag being placed in another room and then it was never recovered. We were compensated for the value of the items lost but overall it felt like there was no accountability for the lack in procedures that this could even happen. This is a 5 star property and while the specific product costs were replaced , the inconvenience of the lost items and now replacing those items was not accounted for."

"Beach is absolutely beautiful, and staff were great despite being seemingly shorthanded. On service, Simon was a wonderful and kind butler - very thoughtful. Several members of the wellness team including Marlisha, Marianne, and Ronan are wonderful too. Restaurants are generally great, though L'Oursin could use some food refinements."
