PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Red Sea along Jeddah's New Corniche, a cream-coloured block of ten storeys draws its decorative language not from contemporary hospitality design but from the classical Hejazi palace tradition — pointed arches, carved plasterwork cornices, and a stone facade detailed with the restrained grandeur of Saudi royal architecture. Waldorf Astoria Jeddah Qasr Al Sharq, which translates as Palace of the East, opened in 2009 as part of a broader ambition to establish the Corniche as a destination in its own right, its 222 rooms and suites positioned to face both the waterfront and the city skyline. The interiors abandon any instinct toward restraint. Public rooms are arranged around soaring Moorish arches trimmed in gilded stucco, with cream marble floors inlaid in geometric borders and crystal chandeliers of considerable scale suspended from coffered ceilings painted in gold leaf. Guest suites sustain this register throughout — hand-knotted carpets in deep crimson and cobalt with scrolling arabesque motifs, gold-leafed television armoires, silk damask wall panels, and chaise longues finished in gilt framing. The indoor pool hall offers a contrasting moment of architectural calm: a barrel-vaulted glass roof floods the space with daylight while abstract blue mosaic murals sweep across the barrel vault's flanking panels, their fluid forms echoing the Red Sea just beyond the palm-lined beach. The effect throughout is of a property that treats Hejazi decorative heritage as a living vocabulary rather than a period reference.

"I had a lovely time at the Waldorf Spa. I have enjoyed a wonderful massage there, Hersey did an excellent job. Thanks a lot!"

"The Waldorf Astoria Qasr al Sharq is a luxurious hotel located on the corniche in Jeddah. The hospitality was good, but no better than at other 5-star hotels we have stayed at. Breakfast was à la carte and of excellent quality. The room was incredibly spacious, with luxurious decor, and the bathroom was also very pleasant."

"Fairly nice hotel, however they charged me a room upgrade fee for every night I stayed despite not asking for and not receiving one. They then refused to correct the bill, and once I left refused to answer my phone calls or emails. Hilton customer service at least answered the phone but was otherwise completely useless. I would recommend staying elsewhere or taking the risk of dealing with the same issues."

"I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in many cities before, but never seen a hotel this unprepared and disappointing. First I arrived at 1pm and was told an early check-in will be difficult as the hotel is fully booked, and that check in time is 3pm for my junior suite. I got my room at 4:30pm which was very inconvenient and frustrating as it ruined my day plans. The breakfast was a joke, there was only 1 waiter in the whole restaurant, who actually did her best to accommodate the 3 tables that were having breakfast, otherwise the hotel is ghost town, I can’t believe how they said it was fully booked when the hotel is so empty, they are completely and ridiculously understaffed. Even the hotel manager is nowhere to be found when i requested his communication 2 times. Mr Abduallah from the reception was very nice and professional, and he also offered us a late check out in compensation. But I will never stay in this disappointing property again."
