PB hotel design editorial

For over a century, the building at the corner of North Bridge and Market Street served as the headquarters of The Scotsman newspaper — one of Britain's most distinguished broadsheets — before its conversion into The Scotsman Hotel in 2001. Designed by J. Dunn in 1905 in an exuberant Scottish Baronial style, the sandstone facade presents stepped crow-step gables, carved heraldic stonework, and rusticated arched entrances that anchor the building emphatically to Edinburgh's skyline at the top of the Old Town ridge. The transformation into a 69-room hotel preserved the original marble-columned banking hall, visible in the images as a double-height atrium of breathtaking civic confidence — verde antico marble pilasters, wrought-iron balconies trailing greenery, Thonet bentwood chairs grouped around travertine cafe tables beneath a crystal chandelier of considerable scale. The guest rooms work in deliberate counterpoint to that grandeur. Bleached oak panelling runs floor to ceiling, echoing the original woodwork found throughout the building while translating it into something quieter and more contemporary — pale sage ceilings, waffle-weave throws in dove grey, upholstered tub chairs in oatmeal linen. The Scotsman Suite retains some of the building's original editorial offices. In the dining room, full-height oak panelling continues the material conversation, chandelier clusters overhead while barrel chairs in forest green, slate blue, and aubergine velvet introduce warmth and colour against the neutral ground — a calibrated balance between institutional heritage and liveable comfort.

"While check in was a bit cumbersome with little information provided, we made our way to our room (going through a wedding reception)(guided by an employee). The layout of the hotel is a bit odd, but an incredibly lovely old building. Our room was a bit noisy on the second night due to a loud neighbor. Breakfast was very nice! Bathroom was spotless. Only issue with cleanliness was the upholstered furniture was a bit dirty. Bed was clean and comfortable. The cafe service was delightful and food was very good."

"Had afternoon tea booked for lunch. Our server was very welcoming and full of smiles. She spent a long time recommending the alcoholic options to us and when we politely asked for the classic option her face visibly dropped. Clearly she was disappointed in our choice which made us feel awkward. She then proceeded to not smile at us at all during the rest of taking our order and the quick check on us later, even though we watched her being full of smiles when taking other people's orders who had come in after us. We felt that we had been judged for not wanting to get tipsy at lunchtime. Perhaps we were just unlucky to get this person. We feel that all customers should be treated with the same level of respect, no matter what they may or may not order. Also we were told there would be free refills of tea and coffee but we had to go to the bar to place those orders. For most of the visit no server even passed us. If the serving experience had been professional and respectful then this would have been a five star review and we would have recommended the Grand Cafe to our family and friends. Unfortunately this is not the case and we would be hesitant at returning."

"I recently had dinner at the Grand Cafe in the Scotsman Hotel with my daughter and grand children. The restaurant is beautiful and the A la Carte menu was fantastic; the choice was good and the food was of an excellent standard. The children were offered a different menu to suit their younger tastes. Their portion sizes were good (not too small so suitable for children rather than a toddler for example) and the children enjoyed their meals. They particularly enjoyed the delicious desserts! I would strongly recommend the Grand Cafe for anyone wanting a memorable experience with exceptional food and both efficient and friendly staff. The staff went above and beyond to ensure our visit was special. I will definitely be making a trip to the Grand Cafe a part of any future visit to Edinburgh."

"Any stay in a city hotel is now measured by our excellent time at THE SCOTSMAN HOTEL. The elegant, Scottish hospitality offered at THE SCOTSMAN is so very welcome to any traveler. Our room was sleekly designed to balance out the classic character of the building…it was comfortable, roomy, and appointed with every convenience. The shower alone was almost worth the price. Food and drink at THE GRAND CAFE was so good we returned again and again. The hotel is situated one block of The Royal Mile and about halfway between Edinburgh Castle and The Palace of Holyroodhouse, so everything is accessible to walking."
