PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings completed in Britain this century have announced themselves quite so brazenly as the coiled, copper-dark tower that crowns Edinburgh's St James Quarter development. Designed by BDP architects and developed by Nuveen Real Estate, the structure's spiralling ribbon facade — dark bronze cladding wrapping each floor in a continuous horizontal band, illuminated from beneath at night — sits in deliberate confrontation with the Georgian sandstone grid below. W Edinburgh, which opened in 2021 within this 12-storey form housing 244 rooms, makes no apology for the provocation. Interiors by Graven, the Glasgow-based studio, translate the city's geological and cultural character into a language the brand can carry. Guestrooms set copper pipe detailing and terrazzo bar surfaces against bold geometric ceiling planes — deep navy angles cutting across white — the effect somewhere between a rock climber's bothy and a fashion week set. Freestanding soaking tubs sit level with platform beds on rugs that burn with amber and violet. Higher up, the rooftop restaurant frames the Old Town skyline — castle, Balmoral clock tower, the spires of the New Town — through floor-to-ceiling glass, amber velvet banquettes and a mirrored ceiling holding the cityscape twice. The ground-floor bar leans into a warmer register: parquet floors, woven rattan chairs in a mid-century mould, chartreuse velvet ottomans, and textured ceramic tiles behind the counter in a palette of sage and clay.

"Lovely hotel and staff were amazing. Can not fault anything at all. Everything from checking in to leaving was exceptional. Breakfast delicious and the 360 view was stunning. Will definitely go back."

"Popped in to ask for best room prices for a future booking as o happened to be on business in Edinburgh and am due to return. The woman on reception treated me like a total inconvenience. She made me feel like I was asking for something totally ridiculous and treated me like something on the bottom of her shoe. It felt like she was looking down her nose at me thinking I did not have the budget for a place like this. I would advise not making these presumptions. I’ll be taking by businesses, and £400 per night fee and spending it elsewhere. If this reflects the customer service for guests, then it’s a no from me. Perhaps the other reviews are indeed correct. Poor show."

"We stayed for one night in the middle of the week. We had a great room with good amenities. We didn’t eat in the hotel but we did go for a drink in the rooftop bar which is great although be warned, the service is slow… overall a good experience but not exceptional."

"This is not a 5 star hotel. The room was no better than a Premier Inn….who do a good job, but this was meant to be exceptional if it’s 5 star. The bathroom was tiny….and there wasn’t even a bath. Nowhere to put on makeup/dry hair….essentially no dressing table or desk. I had to dry my hair perched on a bed. Very hot. Massive queue at check in and quite harassed staff. The room was miles away… a real trek. We booked into the W restaurant for what we thought was dinner but it turned out to be bar snack type stuff. The two women next to us had done the same. It’s not clear the place isn’t a restaurant, it’s the bar. It was heaving and we had to wait for a booked table. So for our 30th anniversary dinner we had bar snack type food. If you were a resident and hadn’t booked a table at the bar, you weren’t getting in. I’ve never heard of that before. People were being turned away who were staying and were not happy. There needs to be somewhere residents can go if it’s busy like that. You need a mortgage to drink your mini bar!!! There was a sommelier wanting to come and chat about the wine but who does that with a burger and chips. It was crazy. The waiting staff try to memorise your order and got it wrong both at night and in the morning. We waited an eternity for everything….the ladies next to us had to leave or they wouldn’t have got their train. It was all just chaotic…. It was Christmas but it’s meant to be 5 star. We treat ourselves to lovely places occasionally and this doesn’t even come close. We did not feel special, nor did we feel looked after. There were kids running amok round the breakfast room the next morning. Staff should have asked parents to control them. I would never have allowed that as a mum…..it was like Centre Parks. The only redeeming feature is the location but having stayed at the Glasshouse across the road…..it is far better in terms of customer service and the rooms. I think this place is fine to put your head down for a night, have burger and chips and perhaps pay £200 but at almost triple that…….eh, no. Got to the Premier Inn."
