PB hotel design editorial

At the western terminus of Princes Street, where Edinburgh's grandest thoroughfare meets the castle rock, a Edwardian sandstone railway hotel built in 1903 for the Caledonian Railway Company has outlasted the station it once served — the tracks long gone, the building immovable. Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian, known locally as the Caley, was designed by architects Peddie and Forbes in a Flemish Renaissance manner, its warm pink Dumfriesshire sandstone contrasting with the grey ashlar of the New Town around it. The Saltire and Union Jack still fly from the columned entrance portico, exactly as they appear in these images, Edinburgh Castle visible on the volcanic crag directly behind. The 241 rooms carry a palette calibrated to their Edwardian bones — damask-patterned wallcoverings, heavily carved mahogany bed frames, tufted leather benches, and upholstered armchairs in deep teal and aubergine velvet set against plaid-carpeted floors that acknowledge the city without resorting to tartan pastiche. The suites run through generous interconnecting sequences, their proportions revealing the original railway hotel's ambition. The Pompadour by Galvin, the principal dining room, preserves its extraordinary plasterwork ceiling — rococo cartouches, floral swags, arched bays — now animated with de Gournay-style botanical wall panels and turquoise upholstered dining chairs that hold the room in productive tension with its Georgian inheritance.

The Caledonian Edinburgh, Curio Collection by Hilton Reviews

"First time in Edinburgh and wanted a well located, high quality hotel. The Caledonian ticks all the boxes - it has the quality and standards you expect from a Hilton brand, but being a Curio Collection hotel it has retained its own unique charm and character. From the tartan liveried doormen, to the Scottish porridge and haggis available at breakfast, to the amazing views over the Castle, it’s a wonderful hotel. It’s well located within walking distance of all the major sights, has a fantastic pool/spa, and the rooms have a beautiful local charm in the decor. Very happy with it, and will definitely stay here again next time I’m in Edinburgh."

"My wife and I visited Edinburgh on a celebration vacation, and stayed at The Caledonia Edinburgh. As a Lifetime Diamond Hilton Honors member I feel I can speak with authority - I've stayed in some of the finest Hilton properties all over the world, but the Edinburgh Caledonia is absolutely the finest stay I've had. Timeless beauty, fastidiously maintained, and absolutely the best staff I've ever been welcomed by. So welcoming, efficient, helpful, smiling, joyous - I cannot say enough. From desk to concierge to restaurant to the bar to the maintenance staff - all were a joy to meet, and made our celebration perfect. I humbly thank them all, and heartily recommend to stay there when in Edinburgh!"

"A fantastic hotel at walking distance to the castle and the Royal Miles. Emma at reception upgraded us to a room with a view of the castle as she found out we were there to celebrate our birthday! Thank you so much Emma you gifted us of that beautiful room! Unforgettable 🙏🏼"

"I went with my daughter for a spa pool day on Mothers day and it was fantastic. All hotel staff were lovely, however the Spa staff were absolutely exceptional and amazing - they went above and beyond and deserve to be singled out for recognition as they are an absolute credit to the hotel. Nothing was too much bother. They were friendly with a professional line and put you at ease. Upon arrival they were ready with complimentary towels, robes and slippers. The facilities were spotless and the pool water was checked regularly by the staff. The sauna, steam room and warm salted water jacuzzi were all lovely additions. Swimming with a view of Edinburgh castle was a treat. Then afterwards getting showered, and changed it was lovely to be able to straighten and blow dry my hair and dry off my wet pool clothes before we left. Will definitely be back!"

"We visited the Caledonian on Saturday, 14th March, for a spa day with a mum-to-be massage for my fiancée and an afternoon tea. The whole experience was wonderful. We’re both really grateful to all the staff we met. They were so warm, friendly and helpful. Nothing forced or superficial - just nice people, who are very good at their jobs. We don’t get much free time together, and we both left the Caledonian feeling like we’d had a special experience. I would like to mention Lucasz in The Court, where we had the afternoon tea. He manages to combine the highest level of professionalism with a real warmth and humour, and helped so much to make us feel comfortable and happy. We love this place and we look forward to coming back. Thank you everyone."
