PB hotel design editorial

Dark brick, black steel canopies, and a facade that carries the compressed authority of mid-century commercial architecture — the building that houses Dakota Glasgow sets a tone before anyone crosses the threshold. Opened in 2017 on West Regent Street, the hotel was developed by Ken McCulloch, the hotelier behind the original Malmaison concept, and brought his characteristic instinct for atmospheric density to a city that responds well to it. The interior design, handled in-house with McCulloch's close involvement, channels a cinematic noir sensibility: low light, rich darks, and a palette that moves between charcoal, tobacco leather, and burnished brass without ever tipping into pastiche. The 83 rooms follow a consistent logic — deep-buttoned leather headboards in aged tan, framed antique sheet music arranged in grid formations above the bed, tufted velvet sofas in slate grey, and bedside lamps casting amber pools rather than filling the room with light. The bar applies the same grammar at a social scale, with frosted globe pendant lights on brass stems, a dark marble counter, and framed charcoal portrait illustrations evoking old Hollywood rather than Scottish heritage. In the restaurant, exposed brick and nailhead-trimmed tan leather banquettes shift the register toward something more grounded, the rough masonry providing texture against the otherwise controlled darkness. Throughout, the effect is closer to a well-edited private members' club than a conventional city hotel.

"We visited the Cigar Terrace at the Dakota Hotel Glasgow and had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was lovely, relaxed, welcoming, and perfect for a special evening. What really stood out, though, was the exceptional service. The staff were attentive, friendly, and incredibly helpful throughout our visit, making us feel genuinely valued as guests. A special mention goes to our server, Ross (I believe that was his name), who was outstanding and helped make our evening even more enjoyable. Although we didn't stay at the hotel on this occasion, our experience was so positive that we would definitely consider booking a stay the next time we're in Glasgow. We would highly recommend the Cigar Terrace to anyone looking for great food, excellent service, and a wonderful atmosphere."

"Impressive hotel on entrance.. reception staff very helpful and welcoming Booked Executive room which at first looked great..but attention to detail was missing, 1/2 toilet roll in bathroom with no spare available, I would certainly not go to reception asking for another toilet roll.. embarrassing to say the least..and I'm sure no other guests would want to do that either No hand soap also, luckily my partner had some with her..then television stopped working after 5 mins, reported to reception regarding television which was promptly fixed Breakfast was very good and blonde girl who met me at breakfast led me to a table and promptly got a coffee and explained the breakfast menu and buffet offerings Room was very hot during the night All in all .. experience was average but room for improvement Dakota..the toilet roll gate annoyed me the most Could do better Dakota"

"We only stayed two nights. The lobby staff were excellent, and while we were going to the parking lot, they brought our luggage to our room. The room was large and very comfortable. We had requested two twin beds, but they didn't have any available rooms, so they gave me a standard king-size bed. The bathroom was very large and comfortable. The entire hotel was very elegant decorated."

"Visited The Bar & Grill at Dakota Glasgow for a date and had a genuinely lovely experience. The service was excellent — attentive without being intrusive — and the whole atmosphere felt relaxed and well looked after. A really good start to the night. After we finished, we headed over to Jacks Bar, and funnily enough, our server from Dakota was there enjoying a drink. Honestly, it was nice to see staff able to unwind in the same area; it says something positive about the environment. Unfortunately, the vibe at Jacks Bar didn’t quite match. One of the guys behind the bar was literally swatting bar flies with an electric zapper — buzz, buzz, buzz — right in front of customers. Not exactly what you want to see while having a drink. We finished one and decided to leave."
