PB hotel design editorial

Dark brick, black steel canopies, and a facade that carries the compressed authority of mid-century commercial architecture — the building that houses Dakota Glasgow sets a tone before anyone crosses the threshold. Opened in 2017 on West Regent Street, the hotel was developed by Ken McCulloch, the hotelier behind the original Malmaison concept, and brought his characteristic instinct for atmospheric density to a city that responds well to it. The interior design, handled in-house with McCulloch's close involvement, channels a cinematic noir sensibility: low light, rich darks, and a palette that moves between charcoal, tobacco leather, and burnished brass without ever tipping into pastiche. The 83 rooms follow a consistent logic — deep-buttoned leather headboards in aged tan, framed antique sheet music arranged in grid formations above the bed, tufted velvet sofas in slate grey, and bedside lamps casting amber pools rather than filling the room with light. The bar applies the same grammar at a social scale, with frosted globe pendant lights on brass stems, a dark marble counter, and framed charcoal portrait illustrations evoking old Hollywood rather than Scottish heritage. In the restaurant, exposed brick and nailhead-trimmed tan leather banquettes shift the register toward something more grounded, the rough masonry providing texture against the otherwise controlled darkness. Throughout, the effect is closer to a well-edited private members' club than a conventional city hotel.

"Overall very good experience. Good Service/ People. BUT for me the hotel was very dark and lacked natural light. So very hard to judge it's cleaness. Due to it's location It has no view ....and is located between taller buildings, which is a shame, cause I would definetly would have like to use it agian for the People and Service. Also I had boked King size but was never sure if the King size room was what I got or not."

"We just returned from 2 nights at the hotel and were blown away by how good it was. The staff are some of the most friendly, welcoming and happy people I’ve come across. Nothing was too much and you genuinely felt they were happy to see you. Food and service were exceptional but the room…. Wow! From the beautiful decor to quality products, mini bar, comfortable beds… the hard work the housekeeping team do to keep it looking “tip top” every little detail has been thought of. Thank you, we will return at every opportunity."

"Best hotel experience! Customer service was like non other. I’ve never received room so fast and it was consistent each day. The accommodations were very comfortable and after a long day of work the perfect place to come “home” to. I highly recommend the Dakota Hotel Glasgow and look forward to staying there again."

"annual trip away for birthday and anniversary celebrations = welcome was excellent from reception staff. hotel, as always comfortable, clean, service is attentive but not over the top, I feel it's not quite as "indulgent" as in previous years, cut back in amounts of toiletries etc, we had to ask for another tiny shower gel for example (which was readily given!) , breakfast not as plentiful, (and in fact I had to send mine back as not edible, not something I ever do! , staff were lovely and offered replacement) not as much in complementary mini bar, that being said - we had a wonderful time and likely will be back again next year!!"
